It's like someone took the fixtures of fantasy and science fiction, and just put them haphazardly in a house without knowing what they were for. You flick a switch and the lamps don't turn on, you've got the beds in the bathrooms, and the sofa is blocking the stairs.
It's different, and you can live there, but it doesn't quite work.

One of my favorite parts of the comic is how Ramona is basically a complete subversion of every manic pixie dream girl trope she inadvertently inspired. Is that really a bad thing though? The characters still act pretty human, and it's not like O'Malley forces his pet politics into it. The only times there really feels like there's any kind of agenda is occasionally a gay couple shows up and no one makes a big deal out of it one way or another. In the last book, Ramona shows up near the end after a considerable absence. IIRC, Scott spent that whole time thinking he'd pushed her back to her ex. I bought the first chapter of Rat Queens bracing myself for disappointment because it looked like something that might veer into the stuff you mention. While it was indeed a bit spotty in places, it never truly crossed the line for me, and overall it was good enough that it made up for the weaker bits.

It's not as esoteric as K6BD, but it has some... interesting concepts? It takes place in some kind of scifi space setting though with plenty of magic. Really, only Scott is an asshole. Ramona to a lesser extent, but Scott's main doubles are he's indecisive, lazy, and self-centered. Despite this, he's still pretty likable and much if the comic is about him growing up.
None of the supporting characters are really assholes except the villains. Scott's drummer can be a little shitty sometimes, but that's because they were once in a rocky relationship and she never quite got over him.
