AT? Tumblr? My friend, you are behind the bandwagon! It is all lesbian spacejewels with their palboy SJW lad!

But legit, alot of the AT girls fall into this category in at least some ways. All "vague" colors (Until they released Marceline being white as canon.) Not traditionally girly? PB is a scientist who majors in everything MATH and Marceline is a rockstar. Spunky haircuts? PB goes through quite a few haircuts but they're relatively normal, Marceline has wild unkempt hair that isn't girly or manly, just gross. Hipster attire? Goddamn right Marceline and PB wears out of date throwback clothing, lab coats and rock wear. FP is the only "chubby" character and she isn't overly so.

In other words, you are correct, there is no singular female character that fills all those roles and no character really DEFINED by being female (Which is great, I fucking love AT.) but it still has lots of things that appeal to the Tumblr crowd, just nowhere near what newer more HOT shows do. Seriously, fuck Steven Universe.

SU is surprisingly great, you really shouldn't take ED as non-biased or accurate. It's filled with songs, starts pretty simple and even a bit childish, but slowly evolves into doomsday scenarios and body horror.

I honestly wasn't expecting it to be good, I actually actively avoided it because to me it was "that one tumblr show", but I ended up hooked.

>>47217131
> not traditionally girly
> PB is a scientist who majors in everything MATH and Marceline is a rockstar

Like, sjw aside or whatever. They're still feminine when they do it, what's non feminine about it? If you wanna complain about non-feminity, we've Lumpy Space Princess (Which I actually feel was made to poke fun at tumblr.)
>>
>>47216082

Yeah...somehow I don't think 80s anime did much there.

I mean, did you ever SEE Macross?
>>
>>47217781

SU is a show about three alien robot ex-soldiers and how they deal with the loss of their leader. They also have to take care of a human/alien hybrid and have no idea what to do because they don't understand humans and human customs.
The creator of the show is a woman, though, so the alien robots look like women. This upsets lots of people. And some people are super into it because it's easy to read into something if you try.

>>47217871

Are you retarded? Or does me liking a cartoon trigger you into remembering the mean SJWs who make fun of you online?
>>
>>47217781

I watched the first 20? eps to try and get into SU.

I really couldn't. It seemed harmless enough but nothing special enough to actually go out of my way to watch.
>>
I was told by a rabid SJW that as a white cis male I wasn't allowed to watch SU. It wasn't meant for me. Not that I care what she says, but I figured that if a screaming tranny on tumblr liked it then the show was likely to be shit.

>>
>>47217781
>Is there any character development/growth?

Character development and growth is pretty much all the show is about. I mean that and making DBZ with alien rock women, Vegeta included.
>>
>>47218019
/tg/ loves scifi.
It's the 40k minority that can't stand anything that isn't 40k.

And Saga has a list of its own problems that make it easy to dislike or to simply find it unappealing.
>>
>>47218018
I enjoy SU, but I'll be the first to admit that it has one of the worst fan bases.
>>
>>47218059

>>
>>47217899
This is pretty much it. People just freak out because it's three women of different looks/body types rather than three Generic White Guys.

The show doesn't do anything "SJW" with it past the generic morality messages cartoons have had forever, it's just the characters involved are women instead of male/female or (since it's very close to a "bromance" thing anyway but with females) male/male.

>>47218063
This is correct.
>>
>>47218018
See, that just makes me want to watch it to spite her.
>>
>>47217938
Ditto. I was interested in piecing together the setting from the hints they drop, but the show itself is kinda boring. Then again the episodes are like 10 minutes long so it doesn't take that much effort to binge. I just don't see what's the big deal about it, either way.
>>
>>47218125
Also, to elaborate a little on this:

Two of the alien characters are very close. As in, so close they literally spend most of the time fused together DBZ fusion dance style.

One of the alien characters was super tsundere for another who is now dead, and still occasionally flips out about it.

The character who is dead (since before the series started) was kind of big (as in literally BIG - twice the height of the other characters), and I guess some tumblrinas thought that "scaled up" and "chubby" were the same thing?

That's pretty much it. The rest of the series is monster of the week stuff, fighting aliens, and adventures of a half-alien kid running around town doing amusing dumb stuff.

>>47218232
Around the second half of season 2, and looking like going into season 3, they finally get into a real impactful plot arc about the background of the Gems and the empire they rebelled from revisiting Earth.
>>
>>47218232
>Then again the episodes are like 10 minutes long so it doesn't take that much effort to binge.

Yeah, which is why I gave it that many eps.

Most shows I wouldn't give 20. If it IS good, it really doesn't start that well. As opposed to Gravity Falls, which did a good job of starting with some crazy fun plots and building up from there.
>>
>>47218085
We've got plenty of SW threads, and Saga is less scifi-fantasy and more fantasy...IN SPACE, a la Spelljammer.

And 40k is less scifi-fantasy, and more just bad sci-fi.
>>
>>47218286
I watched both of the seasons and I can safely say that you didn't miss anything - it's more of the same as those 20 first ones.

Now, GF was a damn good product! Writing, animation, music, all of it was just *right*. It was clear how much care and effort its makers put into it.

Winged sci-fi people live on a planet, horned fantasy people live on the planet's moon. They hate each other and wage war all across the galaxy, usually including lots of servant races and mercenaries.

She was a guard, he was a POW, they fall in love, run away, have a kid, get hunted by agents of both governments.

It is, for better or worse, a setting that largely runs on the rule of "Yeah that sounds cool, throw it in!". A race of cyborg people with televisions for heads, spaceships made of wood, a literal baby black hole, etc. Also lots of sex and violence. I kinda like it, though I'm not gonna get into shouting matches online over it either.
>>
>>47218809
Yeah, Gravity Falls really did drop in quality after season 1 when they lost that "weird" young cartoon feel, and delved into memes and Shaylaman esque "it's a twist". But most cartoons nowadays, from Regular Show to Adventure Time, do this.
>>
>>47218892

I'd honestly disagree. I think it did it's second season damn well.
>>
>>47218892
For the most part I enjoyed the second season, though it definitely was different from the first. The series finale was immensely underwhelming though.
>>
>>47218809
It sucked is what I'm saying. By the end they spent too much time obsessing over Wendip tension, negatively characterized Mabel and failed to give her proper development, marred Stanley's characterization with their introduction of his sibling conflict, ignored Pacifica's development, and gave an unsatisfying conclusion to the symbology on the wheel that they were teasing the whole show.

Honestly SU does more with the plot threads it tosses out. It's presentation is arguably poor, it's storytelling can be heavy handed and it's pacing borders on totally fucked, but it has more substance to it than GF did, which really only played at having deeper plot threads.
>>
>>47218960

> failed to give her proper development

Her development about needing to realize that life and the world continues and you can't keep it static isn't development?
>>
>>47218990
They concluded that development with her convincing Dipper to halt the progress of his own life so he could remain with Mabel, convincing her to leave her construct world so she could return the real world to the way it was before, her brother included. It was the opposite of what you're saying
>>
Why do we feel the need to have /co/ threads on /tg/? I left that place for a reason. Well, a reason besides not having time for cartoons.
>>
>>47217781
It's pretty good mate as long as you stay clear of the Tumblr fanbase.

>they make characters only to defy norms
I can't really think of many examples where this is the case. If you look at the main characters on the surface you get:

> Middle-aged Dad who used to be a mediocre rockstar and now lives in his van
> Overly-optimistic chubby kid
> "Prim and Proper" control freak Girl/rock that wants things to be perfectly how she wants it
> Lazy slob girl/rock that annoys aforementioned girl/rock
> Strong and Silent girl/rock

Other characters include:
> Amazonian Warrior girl/rock
> Tsundre Alien girl/rock who "doesn't understand but wants to understand"
> Asian parents with high expectations for their child, and one of them is a doctor
> Aspiring actor
> Annoying little shit kid

Only character I can think of that really "defies norms" is the asian girl who wants to be a sword-fighter instead of a doctor.

This, really. I'd like that picture more if it didn't have to throw those under the bus. It's not the AT showrunner's fault their fans are awful. It isn't Bryan Lee O'Malley's fault retards appropriated his art style and misunderstood his characters.
>>
>>47220068
The character designs are atrocious. Good art, awful designs.

There's also a distinct made-for-mainstream-television feel that is an awkward and conflicting mixture with fantasy, like you're watching actors who are just tired with dealing with the setting, and that ends up bleeding into the audience. Everything new is just a new problem, there's a sense of tedium and routine that makes anything that could be exciting seem hollow and unfulfilling.

It's like someone took the fixtures of fantasy and science fiction, and just put them haphazardly in a house without knowing what they were for. You flick a switch and the lamps don't turn on, you've got the beds in the bathrooms, and the sofa is blocking the stairs.

It's different, and you can live there, but it doesn't quite work.

I've seen those types before. Basicly, they don't care about the media, they just want to own things.
They can't comprehend people enjoying works of fiction for being works of fiction, they find something that represents their group of identity and enshrine it, believing they now possess everything related. Because no cis guy can enjoy a game if there's a transperson in it.
Flaws will be either ignored or blamed on the creator's rac, gender, etc.

What about flame princess?
>>
>>47220632

This, and it's because boring white husbands and boring white mothers get off on the racial aspects.

Plus black guys get real pissy whenever "one of their own" is taken from them by a white guy, I'm talking /pol/-tier bitch fits from men the average person from San Francisco would zealously defend (but lock their doors while passing on the street.)

It's really quite disgusting though, trying to emphasize how "great" it is to date a black guy by objectifying them and opening women to all the abuse black men typically give them.
>>
>>47220851
I don't know how feminists can call themselves allies of black communities, given that there is little difference attitude-wise between poor blacks and poor whites. Both tend to be super-religious misogynists. And I mean misogyny where in women are genuinely treated like chattel, not the "a guy stared at me and I felt raped" bs.
>>
>>47220904

Feminism and the left in general has a very weird view on vocabulary and the use of words, it's very much the reason why they've been as successful as they have.

For example, the term "ally", as you said, denotes someone of equal status in whatever struggle you're undertaking, someone that has your back and you have theirs. However, in the modern feminist movement you often see ally used by people who are openly mocked or told to "shut up" when someone "more relevant" to the discussion shows up. In this regard, you could consider the ally less an ally and more a meat-shield, which when you consider the average ally is a below-average white guy desperate for relevancy in a world that's stopped giving a shit about their needs, is completely accurate. An ally is someone to be squeezed for all their letters and opinions before being discarded, a buffer between the "wrong side of history" and the "right."

Your mentioning of lower-class opinions on women is completely accurate though, poor black men treat women like wombs to be conquered, blame it on their lack of father figures and the resulting "hyper-masculinity" that results, where their understanding of what a man is was given to them by a gang leader, the TV, or a rapper.
>>
>>47220632
They kibda do. Black women have a relentless paranoia of white women stealing black men from them, and their generally confrontational personalities are a turn off to men of all races. Black culture is all kinds of fucked really
>>
>>47220851
>Plus black guys get real pissy whenever "one of their own" is taken from them by a white guy
As a black guy I've only ever seen the reverse. Black wonen freak the fuck out when their men run off with white women, while the men are pretty apathetic towards who's fucking who, as long as he's fucking the most/hottest. You are right on the shit way men treat their women though. It's just black women are fucked in the head and want that shit, to the point of bashing her man's masculinity if he isn't being dominant (read:chauvinistic) enough

It's kind of easy to see how Scott Pilgrim, tumblr and hipsters would overlap now that you mention it.

It does make digs at hipster types. The characters are all a bunch of lazy slackers who don't really want to grow up. Scott even gets a "real job" at one point and hates it.

I have a feeling tumblr missed most of the "characters acting like real people" parts though, and instead focused on how there's a gay character in it and how Ramona is "fat".
>>
>>47221440
>>47221416
It made digs at hipsters in a self deprecating way. It depicts hipsters and is fairly autobiographical so it is safe to assume Brian, the author was/is a hipsters.

Yeah, but you're not really meant to think they're "right". It's not like Assigned Male or some other shit tumblr comic where the author clearly thinks his characters are the true good guys.

Scott's a lazy, self-pitying asshole for most of it, but I get the sense O'Malley intended that. Ramona likewise comes off rather cold and selfish, and by the end they both kind of work through it.

Ramona even once remarked Scott was the nicest guy she ever dated, which he thought was really sad.

>>
>>47221830
True, but while the book doesn't celebrate the attitude, it certainly doesn't condemn the people who are at that stage in their life.

The people who read the book and find the characters intensely relatable are a good chunk of the intended audience. It may give them some introspection, but it isn't like it is some satirical work for the people who never acted like that.

My point I that Scott Pilgrim is undeniably written with hipsters, tumblrites, poorly informed young "adults", pretentious artists and musicians all in mind. And a lot of stuff that more recent 4chan culture condemns as being tumblr, it actually does celebrate.
>>
>>47221815

One of my favorite parts of the comic is how Ramona is basically a complete subversion of every manic pixie dream girl trope she inadvertently inspired. She isn't spunky, she isn't "random", and she definitely had no interest in acting wacky or spontaneous. She's pretty quiet and sarcastic, and only really dates Scott because he seems nice enough. She's also incredibly selfish in her own right, and the only high ground she really has over Scott is she actually has a job.

And when things get tough, she doesn't just brush it off. She fucks off to her dad's house to binge watch the X-Files and browse 4chan.

>My point I that Scott Pilgrim is undeniably written with hipsters, tumblrites, poorly informed young "adults", pretentious artists and musicians all in mind.

Is that really a bad thing though? The characters still act pretty human, and it's not like O'Malley forces his pet politics into it. The only times there really feels like there's any kind of agenda is occasionally a gay couple shows up and no one makes a big deal out of it one way or another. Shit, in his other book, Seconds, the main character's business partner is gay and you wouldn't even fucking know it if it wasn't for the fact he had a picture of him with his husband and kid on his desk.

As for
>And a lot of stuff that more recent 4chan culture condemns as being tumblr, it actually does celebrate.

In the last book, Ramona shows up near the end after a considerable absence. IIRC, Scott spent that whole time thinking he'd pushed her back to her ex. She tells him she just needed some space, and went to stay with her dad for bit and spent a couple days "dicking around on the internet and watching every single episode of the X-Files"

It was meant to parallel what we saw with Scott, who spent about a week hanging out with Kim at her parents' cabin.

But I just find it disingenuous to say it isn't a hipster book or that its influence on that style of culture was due to misunderstanding the book. If someone starts dying their hair because of Ramona, it isn't because they didn't get how it negatively relates to her character.

>tfw you realize Jews, Celts, and Slavs are as different from ethnic Germans (including Scandinavians, Poles, western Russians, etc) as any African or Asian.
And then there's the differences between Chinese and Koreans, for example. Either there's one race or hundreds, depending on how you look at things.

But overall the non-African population is less genetically diverse than the African population. Between different African groups is where the greatest variation is found.
>>
>>47228389
Yeah, because they hung around in huts interbreeding for generations instead of getting civilized, spreading around the world and spreading their genes.
>>
>>47228422
>they are more diverse because of inbreeding
ayyy
>>
>>47228697
They are more "Diverse" because each individual group of hovels they call a village is so inbred they barely have any genetic relation to a village in the country next door

Isn't this supposed to be, together with The Wicked/The Divine, one of THE progressive comics? Whatever the case, it legitimately excellent writing. If they're unironically triggered by this series, they're either faggots with no taste, or SJW types who have gone so deep into the pool that they can't recognise a "progressive" story as long as it doesn't feature two "non-binary, pan/tran/demisexual ftm/mtf individuals that identify as ____". Either way, get the HELL away from your group and get better friends.

>gay, some minority, or both

Wow, I ran through it twice and never noticed. Maybe I was too focussed on blowing shit the fuck up to be offended by some toon models I only saw once. I remember I played Roland because he got that sweet as fuck turret, and I roll to disbelieve anyone refused to play him because his model was dark-skinned. But who was the gay one?

Lolno, that's not how shit works. The reason is pretty simple the non-African population is descended from a relatively small group of people who left Africa. So there's a founder's effect. Basically, the non-African group is the heavily inbred one. A Japanese guy and a German guy are more closely related than a Bantu guy and a San guy both in South Africa (although that' proximity is because the Bantus came and did the whole "invading imperialists" thing just before the white people came in to do the same with a better tech base).

Yeah, Borderlands is not the franchise in which you actually care who the characters are besides their skills. Except the Sirens, people love glowing tatoos.

Axton - made bisexual in the DLC
Hammerlock - gay
laserbitch - dyke
Mr. Torgue - some kinda "feminist ally" garbage
Salvador - a Mexican
Pretty sure Scooter's sister is gay too
Every echo log you pick up usually has some dude talking about his boyfriend or some chick crying about their wife getting killed.

It wasn't enough to ruin my enjoyment of the game (the shitty level scaling, poor loot drop system, and nonsensical plot were more than enough to do that for me) but it made me roll my eyes, especially when I read that Burch thinks he is legitimately making the world a better place by forcing that shit into videogames.

>>47229753
At least they didn't do that thing where harming gays and lesbians is verboten. At least one of those lesbos and her wife were horribly killed by jack through slag exposure.

>Salvador - a Mexican

Hey, fuck you, buddy. Being "Mexican" does not automatically make a character SJW fodder any more than being "white" does not make the character racist.
>>
>>47229753
Well for the record Saxton was supposed to flirt with only women, but there was a bug in the game where he would say the same line for all characters. The studio found it funny and left it in the game, much like most of the things.

Follow your dreams, Anon, it can work out for you

It did for me

on the other hand non african groups are part neanderthal, being hybrids is arguably hella more genetic diversity.
