Alright, seriously we need a better term than "Necromancy"

Alright, seriously we need a better term than "Necromancy" for working with undead. And I'm not impressed with Thanaturgy either.
>>
>>47199388

Crimes Against Vitality.
>>
>>47199416
It really should include necro- or something indicating working with the half-risen dead (as opposed to complete resurrection to full functionality). And just using thanato- doesn't work, because death magics are actually just life magics. "Necromancy" is an entire discipline of working with the undead. I'm trying to come up with a word specifically for that.

Necro doesn't mean being between the state of living and dead. Just means dead.

Necromancy means working with dead things specifically, not making them alive. Its already a pretty good term for it.

You might be looking for a liminal sort of term, you could build off greek roots for 'border' or 'line' but the implications for those words we're use to are more modern.

Its the 'un' part that's tricky really. Anti or not-of rather than opposite.

>Necro doesn't mean being between the state of living and dead. Just means dead.
Actually, it means corpse, which is much more relevant.

>Necromancy means working with dead things
Actually, it literally means communicating with the dead. As in talking to spirits. We've utterly warped in modern times what Necromancy means. Actually, anything with "mancy" on it refers to divination, not magic.

>Anti or not-of rather than opposite.
No, I'm not looking for perfect literaly translation. Something like "Working with the half-risen / Half-risen work" or "Flesh molding" or "raising corpses" or something along those lines.

>>47199538
Lolno I'm just tired of everything "mancy" being inaccurately used for purposes other than divination, which is what those terms actually mean.

I'm not fond of a lot of the ways Europe has phrased things historically. At least "philosphy" describes a discipline, but if I used something like Necrosophy, that would more refer to the study, rather than the actual work involved. And honestly, Necrosophy has that same flaw I mentioned earlier in that it could simply mean something less than what I'm implying - in this case it could easily just mean "knowledge of corpses/the dead", rather than "knowledge of the discipline of raising and controlling the dead".

>>47199720
Could be used to describe level of rapport with undead desu.

Medeis mortis.

Supposing you don't want the obvious sounding "magicae mortis"

Which is literally "magic of death".

Or if you want to focus more around the body, rather than the state of death itself replace "mortis" with "mortuus" which means corpse.

This is from google translate, and unless you find someone who had studied latin or greek you're unlikely to get better. So you could probably go ask that faggot Soma sometime.

Now fuck off.

Just spin Necromancy as including, as a more advanced form of talking with the dead, the power to command the dead, often used to force them to possess their own corpses and serve the dread sorcerer.
>>
>>47199650

Black Magic is like THE term for evil magic that involves directing dark energies, curses, instadeath spells, mucking with the dead and often includes trafficking with dark spirits.

People who just talk to grandma's ghost or bind/banish troubled spirits are usually referred to as mystics, exorcists, mediums, shamans, or psychics these days. But they don't go out and turn grandma's corpse into a slave soldier.
>>
Sarcology, sarcofication, illegal resurrectionism.

Dunno,OP,I think Necromancy itself is a good term.
>>
Thanotosian priest/mage?
>>
>>47199388
Well, what's wrong with Necromancy? It sounds pretty straightforward to me. Necro is corpse, mancy is divination, but we tend to use it for magic in general whether it's pyromancy or geomancy.
>>
The proper term is Necromagia, but everybody calls it Necromancy. The Necromagi are very upset by being called necromancers, but the people don't care because necromancer sounds cooler.
>>
>>47202086
OP wants to be cool and different. But he doesn't have either the time, drive, or creative spark to actually be cool and different. In an attempt to reconcile who he wants to be and who he is, he's decided to have strangers on the internet do the heavy lifting so he can nick their ideas and show them off to people he actually knows, thus obtaining the facade used to overcome life's hardships, 'Fake it Till you Make it.'

Things went horribly wrong when he decided to get snooty about which free ideas he would accept and which he wouldn't, leading to a number of anons, now including myself, to call him out. OP reacted... poorly. And that's a synopsis of the thread thus far.

In direct answer to your question, however, he's mad because mancy, referring to divination, doesn't fully encapsulate what he perceives as the scope of what Necromancy does, even though literally anyone who knows what Necromancy is will know almost exactly what you're referring to if you use the term, making it perfectly acceptable.

Strictly speaking, "necromancy" means practicing divination with a corpse. If you're talking about the "dead", you should specify how much you're talking about physical remains or spiritual animus. Then for the "mancy" part, you can make it sound more encompassing or tradelike.

No, my friend, I'm Greek and I can confirm "necro-" (from the adjective "nekros") definitely means "dead". You are right about "-mancy", though.

As for alternative terms, "ptoma" is the word for corpse (literally meaning "fallen"), so you might be looking for "ptomaturgy" or "ptomatokinesis". If you don't like "ptoma", "necrurgy" and "necrokinesis" also work. The word for "flesh" is "sarka", so (in an anglicised format) you could have "sarcokinesis" as well (moving of the flesh?).

There's so many words you can come up with.
