interesting to see female wizards. Didn't know that existed. Thought there only be witches.
>>47192542
Witches are a certain type of magic user, while wizard is sort of a more general term, in my experience.
>>47190660
Honestly, it's the dog is what sells this picture.
>>47192646
The dog is the master Wizard, the other guy is the apprentice.
You can tell by the wizard hat.
>>47192602
>>47192542
Isn't a witch just a female warlock? Then there's sorcerer and sorceress. A wizard is the only non-gendered magic user, it seems. Maybe you can consider thaumaturgist or prestidigitator, too.
>>47190505
Aw shit this thread needs more ladywizards.
>>47192791
That's because Wizards are usually male-only. Class prerequisites include a beard. Dwarven Women are the only females to qualify.
>>47192822
>>47192542
pretty sure that's a young dude with long hair.
>>47192791
I always figured all of those were the same thing, magician, with particular names being for particular cultures/regions/dialects
Maaaaaybe warlocks are specifically those that got their power from demonic pacts
>>47192858
What about in Equal Rites? That girl was a wizard.
>>47192791
All of those means the same thing. D&D was just desperate for names for its myriad magic users that don't really have reason to exist. It's like how in Diablo 2 item names get progressively sillier and sillier as you advance through tiers and they started pilfering Frech, Spanish and Italian synonyms after they run out of English words for things.
The only difference between a witch, a warlock, a wizard and a sorcerer in pop culture today is that they sort of rank in that order by how much money they typically have. Witches live in huts, warlock might operate out of an abandoned tower, wizard works for someone who owns a castle and presumably has spare towers, and sorcerer is self-employed and self-entowered.
>>47192959
Each caster in D&D has a different approach to casting spells that makes them distinct.
>>47192994
Not that Anon, but that's still specifically a difference invented for the sake of game mechanics. In stories and what have you, the difference is author preference.
>>47192994
D&D magic users are less diverse mechanically than fighter and rogue, two character classes that have no mechanical variety in themselves or between themselves. Vast majority of them is just one and the same thing fluffed differently.

'Warlock' originally (supposedly) comes from an Old English word meaning 'oathbreaker'. (Which is ironic, given how they work in DnD.)
The idea of 'warlock' being a male equivalent of 'witch'...well, maybe there's an earlier precedent, but as far as I can tell, 'Bewitched' came up with that.
>>47193785
'When Hulk get out of little red ball, Hulk smash everyone!'
>Sadly, cannot locate pics of the first issue of the Busiek/Larsen Defenders run.
>>47195176
Now I want to somehow refluff warlocks to be more like oathbreakers somehow. Maybe they somehow break all the established rules of magic, but aren't dying or failing as a result by some random chance?
>>47193909
Is the Mass Exorcism actually how the Tomb of Dracula series ended?
Badass.
>>47195176
I always got the hint by taking the name by it's modern literal translation. A mage who is very violent and into causing wars. The image in my head for a warlock is a angry looking Dr. Strange or Raz Al Ghul type who can summon undead armies to do his wars.
>>47190470
I've been debating whether or not to base my next character on him for a while.
