Which one do I play this weekend?
>>
>>47116929
Mazirek can be fun, if you have much sacrifice effects in the deck or play group. Bonus points for having persist creatures with him

Vorel of the hull clade is also like a second Gilder Bairn, and easier to use. A lot of the original simic cards can let you give varying abilities to creature until end of turn, many of which are pretty good

>>
>>47117003
I think Mazirek can fit in no problem, especially since I can stack the sac effects with a dictate of erobos or sifter of skulls or something. I think I really want to make a green black deck because blue isn't adding a heck, but mimeoplasm is just so sexy.

How do you feel about targeted hand discard versus mill as support for graveyard-based jankiness.

Yay for edits and progress. Replaced Marchesa with Thraximundar/Nekusar. I never really ended up using Marchesa in the end. Still waiting on Eldritch Moon to drop so we'll see it we get any interesting yields for sure.

Post you dicks!

>>47116978
Zada or Nath for sure
>>
what is it about combo decks that make them unfun?

sometimes my combo decks are fun to play and other times it feels like a drag to resolve the steps

i think when the combo is too easy to assemble, like when i have way more resources than i need, i just want my opponents to scoop, whereas when its a close thing and i lose if i dont combo off this turn, it feels like a puzzle that i must solve with creativity
>>
>>47117361
I think the more combos that are in a deck the more fun it is, if you end up tutoring your entire deck to just get 3 or 4 cards to pull off a game winning combo that's not very fun.
>>
>>47117361
I find combos disagreeable because most of them end the game in one turn. The same is true even if the "combo" is, play a dude, give him haste and make him big.

That rules actually gets rid of a lot of things I don't care about EDH. No one big turn.

Not that aggressive lock down is fun either. But for me, fun is when there is a lot of back and forth. That means people need to be able to answer it and the easiest way to ensure that is by giving them multiple turns.

The same reason why I "spread the love".
>>
>>47117245
Out of the two reanimater decks I play, Gisa, Mazirek, and soon an Alesha, I tend to sac and re-sac, but blue does open a lot of self mill.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/i-aint-saying-she-is-a-gravedigger/

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/all-smiles-3/

I also had a Momir Vig deck, but I dismantled it for being too boring/winning on turn 5 constantly

>>47117361
That's why I don't play him, too easy to break. Just have ramp, deadeye navigator and peregrine Drake/palincron, some clones, some draw, probably a Hydra broodmother, and coridant crossroads.
>>
>>47117361
Combos essentially make what has happened the entire game irrelevant, since they are supposed to go off regardless of board state and win immediately.

Last turn consisted of a crazy spellslinging war that changed the entire board state?

Doesn't matter since Chad has a two card combo in his hand and was gong to win regardless.

>"I only follow what it says on the card."
Boy, do I have a card for you to use against this kind of person.

Has to be an Ice Age one, though. That's important.
>>
>>47117714
Why does the Ice Age printing make a difference? Mandatory creature sac/no sacrifice on Hecatomb?
>>
File: 29.jpg (63 KB, 312x445) Image search: [Google]
29.jpg
63 KB, 312x445
>>47117799
The 5th and 6th edition versions of Hecatomb have the tapping of a swamp as the cost instead of part of the ability.
>>
>>47117649

see it hasnt been my experience that 2-card combos are very effective

only the ones that require very inexpensive pieces are strong, because otherwise they are spending 8-10 mana in one turn to combo off and at that point you cant really claim that the earlier parts of the game were irrelevant, how did they get to 8-10 mana? that part of the game was relevant

whereas most combos i see actually work are not 2-piece combos but rather 3-6 piece combos but with many interchangeable parts, thats the key.

and lots of these combos require a board presence to go off and you can predict when they are going to go off based on their scary board position

for instance if an elf player has skullclamp and elvish archdruid in play, im going to assume that we need to do something about his board before next turn or we lose
>>
>>47117827

to clarify about the skullclamp archdruid situation

the elf player needs multiple other cards to actually go off but many different cards will do the trick so we have to assume that those cards are on the way, either in his hand already or easy to find by digging
>>
>>47117820
Forgive my ignorance, but why would that make a difference?

>>
>>47117858
Ice age wording under current rules could target a tapped swamp. You can even activate said ability 70 billion times in response to the ETB sac trigger. It's infinite damage at 1BB sorcery speed, no restrictions.
>>
File: Spirit4.jpg (28 KB, 375x523) Image search: [Google]
Spirit4.jpg
28 KB, 375x523
>>47117904
I don't know why I typed black spirits but ok.
>>
>>47117858

well the card's INTENDED functionality hasnt changed but, rules changes implemented after the original printing have made it such that only what is left of the colon, the cost, of the activated ability is required for it to be put on the stack, and the part on the right will do "as much as it can"

after they made that rule, they fixed all these old cards with activated abiltiies that werent worded so clearly

so the old wording is incompatible with the new rules, giving you the ability to activate it as much as you want even if you dont have swamps to tap, because thats just part of the effect and if it cant do that part, then it will simply do the rest of the ability

the oracle text of course does not allow this but for retards who use some sort of "play the cards as written" rule, this card could be an autistic way of rubbing it in the faces of those retards
>>
>>47117975
You need all legal targets for it to be put on the stack. So you have to have at least one swamp, tapped or otherwise.

If I can pull it off early enough it's a quick game
>>
>>47120348
Every single one of you want, a buttload of times.

But hey, their deck isn't infinitely big. Even if they run Beacon of Tomorrows, shit's exiled, only a copy gets cast.

Anyway, I'm really not a combo person, but here's another synergistic interaction, Cloven Casting lets you easily copy multicolored spells, but in the case of copying Beck // Call, you get 12 cards from the original card and the copy, because you got two becks going by the time the bird half of the original resolves.

Here is another simple one, Vengeful Pharaoh pairs well with any dredge spell, because it allows you to keep Vengeful from going back to your hand, where he is relatively useless.

I would say that austere command tends to be a little better than merciless eviction in my experience

but merciless eviction is pretty unique in that it's the only planeswalker wrath that I know of

So if you have a super friends player in your meta it's indispensable, but otherwise, I prefer austere command

Anyone else have a hell of a time trying to play politics at their table? My group just devolves into *Oh you're playing that deck, guys let's all focus him even though we have one guy setting up a fat board lock and obviously tutored for his last piece*

Nah, cause I don't play my good cards as soon as I get them.

I sort of dwadle around with my win cons in my hand while I wait for the board to exhaust what they have.

Also it helps to not have shit commanders
>>
>>47124070
Nah we all typically keep it chill until some heavy shit hits the field, then we start making deals.

It's fun because occasionally someone will go full ham and blitz a few players for a bit during one of the first few games.
>>
>>47124100
I'm not just talking about myself either i'm talking in general it seems like my playgroup would rather play solitaire but have 3 other people there to watch them jerk off their deck or get supes salty when someone gets the better of them, not to mention a couple of the guys literally lose their shit if you counterspell their obviously telegraphed removal/"game winning card"

Yup, drafting is fun but i can't be assed to follow standard and modern is so volatile right now that I'm not even going to bother with it, I'm heavily thinking about making a cube but my playgroup is so bad that I could see them bitch that either the cube is too underpowered or bitch hardcore that X player only won because he got lucky with his pulls. I hate to say it but i wish i was back in college at least my group then was actually fun to play with

That, and that you can take as long as you like to brew.
The only downside is never knowing the thrill of opening a pristine pack and crossing your fingers.

This card is awful, compare it to a fog, more mana to lose a shit load of life as you fog for your creatures

??

I still open a few packs whenever a new set comes out, I don't pray for specific cards I do it just to check out the new set, in art and flavor and mechanics

And I'll usually draft a few times

Three of us have a lot of Magic from over the years. I traded up for a lot of Legacy staples (I traded standard cards for Legacy staples when the prices were comparable years ago), and slowly build up an EDH collection. Most of the decks are seriously within the lower power level and not too extreme.

We make sure our games are full of variety (play ~10 games per night of EDH).
>>
>>47126782
It really is. We can go full T1 competitive if we want - I have played and beaten pure storm lists, 5c Hermit Druid, Derevi Stax, Dreamcrusher Damia, Imperial Animar, etc. with my lists - and we also have really ridiculous jank matchups that take forever to end. So many retired decks over the years too that just couldn't keep up.
>>
>>47126750
>highest power deck for Bluefag is Sedris

Sweet shit I need a list
>>
>>47127022
Wish I had his list. He reanimated Jin on turn 1 last time we played. He likes to hit Jin or Sire on turn 1 if he can, otherwise it's something very dangerous like Mindleech Mass hasted into Vorinclex from the green player's hand. Shit was miserable for a few turns but I had blown my whole hand before he dropped Jin. He lost to me because he spent the entire game targeting fucking Animar and Jhoira. Eliminated everyone until I dropped an infinite.

>>47127105
Heh it's a rare occurrence but he loves it when it happens. Entomb+Reanimate shenanigans. Dark Ritual helps but it's usually the mana rocks that do it. Then Sedris comes out after he fills his grave and it's all downhill for the table...

His Memnarch is pretty close in power level. It goes infinite mana into draw, and then once Lattice hits the table the entire board is his. Runs a lot of counter support. Scion is a bit more predictable so we don't fear it much.
>>
>>47126739
To be pedantic, that's a late 90s/early 2000s border. Legends is lighter shade of gold, and a more washed out look.
>>
>>47127151

Top 3 rows will win on turns 3-8 on average.

It makes for quick games. We all know our decks pretty well.

It's after a few of those that we drop it down into the slower decks and just shit talk while drinking (until 'that guy' gets mad and plays his best deck against precon-tier lists).
>>
>>47127180
I meant top 2 rows*

The 3rd row is where we play most of our games. Lots of janky combos, high aggro tribals, and basic control lists.

The Animar and Damia player like to play their best decks anyway though, unless it's a rare occasion where they borrow a list.

>>
>>47127238
Karlov is easily my strongest deck. Soul sisters and other lifegain pings (Prism Ring had done a surprising amount of work) along with efficient lifelink creatures really add up to make a gigantic ghost uncle. Throw down a Sunscorch Regent or a True Conviction and and you have a very scary commander.
>>
>>47127436
Karlov seems really cool. What are some of his weaknesses?
>>
>>47127447
Animar.
A lot of my friends are cheeky and play "you can't gain life" spells like Erebos and Everlasting Torment, but the only time it's ever really been a problem is when I rage scooped to a Stigma Lasher I couldn't block.
Karlov gets chumped a lot as well. Running shit to make him unblockable will help. I only use Rogue's Passage and somehow manage to draw it almost every game, but you wouldn't be wrong to include some solid evasion like whispersilk or even just shit to get him in the air.
Cyclonic Rift and the like hurt a lot since you spend a lot of the game grinding out a million tiny lifegain interactions, so returning everything to your hand means you have to restart the extort train all over again.

It's a shame the most perfect deck ever made for Magic isn't on your list.

Five color hermit druid combo. I built mine in January of this year and completely slaughtered everyone in my local meta (Texfag here).

To be fair, there weren't really any competitive or even semi good players in my area; they all believed that green was the best color in Magic, when it's obvious green is training wheels.

Of course, being a twenty year veteran of Magic since the beginning of the game I am impossible to beat consistently. Every now and then I end up with a bad shuffle.

OK so I run karlov, many many ways to gain small increments of life at a time making him huge. I run a shitload of tutors (some very, very bad ones, see "divining witch") to equip him with shroud or hexproof as fast as possible. As soon as he reaches godzilla proportions you drop essence harvest to one shot someone, use rogues passage or whispersilk cloak to one shot someone, or use wall of reverence to gain life equal to karlovs immense girth at end of each turn, leave mana open to exile commanders, and wait until you pull a tutor, unblockable, or another one shot. Alternatively, just remove about 32 +1/+1 counters to exile anything that can block, wait a turn, regain all counters and swing for lethal. He's a fun general.

Literally just double sleeve the card, maybe even put that double sleeved ftv foil in a hard sleeve as well if you are that nervous. It will be fine

I'm still not set on who would be the commander. I know Overlord would prob be hands down the best choice and will most likely be him but I'm still building the deck so nothing is set in stone yet.
>>
>>47130292
Overlord or Sliver Queen would be the best choice, but they operate differently, and depending on the choice, deck has different pieces and all. Then again, Mana Echoes should be there anyway, I think, regardless of which one you run.
>>
>>47130485
I think regardless it'll be Overlord as it's the cheapest out of the two and seems to work better with being able to fetch slivers. As for Mana Echoes yeah that's one card I am deff going to get for the deck.

>like everyone else.

Speak for yourself. I've never had a problem with ftv cards. I love when I get then cheap from idiots who don't take care of thier cards.

He's being rather a dick, but I'll give him that, the pack foils are better.

I need to get a foil version. On that note I for one am stoked about Shadows Over Innistrad delivering three new scarecrows unto Magic. Here is hoping Eldrich Moon sees even more scarecrow love. I like the idea of people building and using scarecrows to fight against incomprehensible horrors due to their lack of ability to be driven mad since what does an animated sack of sticks, straw, and cloth really have to fear?

That would have been sweet, it's fucking pretty.

Goyf is decent in french :^) then again it's mostly played like modern

>play EDH a couple time with some new guys, have a blast
>immediately gain a reputation as the rules reference guy
>start receiving endless texts at any hour of the day, as early as 6am

>"Is Primeval Titan Banned?" -Yes, here's a link to the banlist. "Soul Ring is banned?" -Only in duel commander, click the link I gave you. "Is Deus of Calamity banned?"
>"Who picks what to sacrifice when you tell someone to sacrifice something?"
>"What's a combo?"
>"Should I play this card or that card in my new deck you know nothing about?"
I'm fine with asking question but when such a text wakes me up at 6 in the morning this shit is not okay.

You use the last ping to kill Triskelion.

Holy shit are you retarded?

I feel your pain anon. My playgroup is pretty damn heavy on politics. It's usually me or one of my friends getting targeted, so we've just become as rutheless as possible.

If they're gonna target me I might as well give them a real reason.

Since you are being texted in your personal phone and you are not working as a judge or obligated to them, feel free to give them a nasty text telling them to fuck off and stop texting you in the dead hours of the day.

Can Illusionist Bracers work with Sidisi's exploit ability?

Exploiting herself or another creature?
>>
>>47132567
No, Illusionist's Bracers are for activated abilities. You're looking for Strionic Resonator, and yeah, you can copy either Exploit or the tutor triggers once they're on the stack.
>>
>>47131801
Last two.

So, a week or so ago, I saw someone entertaining the idea of a Sidhe-themed deck. I am currently mulling over some cards to make one myself. I just want an excuse to play my Bitterblossom, but I also am a fan of old faerie lore and it's themes.

So the concept I'm brewing:

>Oona as commander
>No mill focus (sucks for a 100-card multiplayer format)
>Instead focus on faerie/rogues/specters and force discard while drawing myself cards
>Use Cipher cards over enchantments where possible
>Try to play it fast so my opponents don't even get to play cards
>If they do play permanents, focus on stealing them
>Pretty budget aside from Bitterblossom
>Basically the evil twin of my Edric deck
>>
>>47132567
Can I equip Nim Deathmantle on Sidisi after she exploits herself for infinite tutoring?
>>
>>47132976
There's a pretty neat discard spell with Cipher. I forgot it's name but i think it had Madness in it.
>>
>>47133252
As long as you have the generic mana to pay for each activation, yeah.

Whispering Madness. Yeah, I'm possibly going to use that. It's a little more suited for Nekusar though as they draw off of it and it affects me too.

Now here's a rules question:

One of my opponents uses Glen Elendra Archmage for infinite counterspells in his Kraj deck. I am wondering: if I discarded Faerie Macabre when the Archmage his the graveyard, would that resolve and exile it from returning? It's a bit of a tricky stack situation and I admit I'm clueless as to if that would work.
>>
Can I get some quick recs for Aurelia? I don't normally play red in any format.
>>
>>47133545
Yes, you can do that.
Respond to the persist trigger by exiling it from the grave, it is no longer in the grave when persist tries to resolve, trigger fizzles.
>>
What is your opinion on Jester's Cap effects? I'm in monoblack and there are a rising number of combo players in my meta and I recently added Sadistic Sacrament to my deck but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. My deck is excellent about generating both mana and card draw so the mana cost or card disadvantage don't bother me too badly.
>>
>>47133655
I used to run Slaughter Games in Olivia to fuck with our blue-based combo players, but took it out because it's rather narrow.
