So recently I acquired a full set of Edge of the Empire books. I've always wanted to run a campaign with people IRL but I have no idea if my friends would be interested, or how to run a session that doesn't sorta die (I've read the horror stories on here)

Anyone have any hints or tips for starting things up? I want to run a classic Star Wars group now that I have the means, and I want the best chance of that happening.

Pic unrelated.

Make sure everybody is on the same page with character creation. Have everyone get together and hash out their character concepts, how they'll all fit together, etc. Make sure everybody is on board with the overall "theme" of the game, and that nobody wants to play a lone wolf or someone who doesn't work with the rest of the party. It's very helpful to make the players come up with reasons why their character is working with the rest of the party.

Yeah, I was thinking that the first night just be them working on their characters together as a group. From what I've heard, character creation always takes much longer than you plan it to, especially for new players.

Thanks for the reply, by the way. All advice/stories welcome.

You're probably going to get a lot of not-Han Solos, but that's okay, as long as everyone is willing to have their characters working together. If your whole group is new to tabletop RPGs, you might want to tell them directly that you're going to railroad the storyline for a little while to get everyone used to how RPGs work. Feel free to tell the players what their characters would PROBABLY do. The end decision is up to the players, but you shouldn't avoid reminding them that everybody is trying to have fun together.

True... I think it'll be interesting to see how they all find not being captain (seeing there's only one ship and only one gets to be the captain).

I'd recommend they make it a little like Firefly, but I don't think any have watched it

Character creation will take a LOT longer than you expect. You might want to tell all the players to come to the chargen session with 3-4 character concepts in mind, just so you don't have someone get obsessed with playing a specific character before they meet the other PCs. That tends to happen a lot. I keep stressing the idea of directly telling the players that they need to be working together to make a fun game for everybody, because it's the most important rule for a good game.

Yeah. I might do that, because I don't want to 'suggest' what they should do. Kinda defeats the purpose

If the players want to be antagonistic to each other in-game and they're fine with that out-of-game, it's definitely okay to have some rivalries. A ship full of characters who all see everyone else as their subordinate would be pretty funny.

You definitely want the group to have an overall objective of some kind. The classic Star Wars party of Han, Luke, Chewie, Leia, and the droids had a big goal of "take down the Empire". If you watch the Rebels cartoon, their mission is a more specialized "take down the Empire one job at a time". Being criminal scum is a good one, as you can have them indebted to mobsters, on the run from the law, or just trying to make a fast credit running hot bantha porn. Really, the objective is something that should form from the discussion between the players about how their characters all fit together.

I don't have a lot of other advice, other than "don't get bogged down with rules if you can handwave it", but if you have any questions I'm gonna post the rest of this in your thread.

That and I'm honestly too impressed someone made a sexy Dry Bones without screwing up the entire design. I mean anyone who looks good can do a hot cosplay, but it takes genuine talent to make it look good on its own merits still.
