It has limited place when the heroes are debating killing innocents to get to the bad guy.
Example: The captain of the guard is an evil bastard who is planning to attack and slaughter a nearby town to search for an object of demonic power rumored to be hidden there. The heroes have discovered this plot and are moving to confront and possibly kill the captain.
But wait! The captain's soldiers are simply loyal men who know nothing of the captain's evil and many of them had been saved by the captain's tactical genius and fighting prowess.
To gain access to the captain you could go through his men, but since they are simply innocents following orders it could be argued that doing so would make you little better than the captain.
