I think the main problem with elves in many settings is that they have no real downsides. They're strong, and beautiful, and gifted with magic, and live in harmony with nature, and still somehow have the most advanced society, and live 3,000+ years, ect...

If you want elves to live long and be super good at magic, fine, but they can't also be strong, and agile, and have the best weapons/armor, ect. Gnomes. I've never seen an interpretation of them that couldn't or wasn't handled better by another race. As well they're just not even that interesting or creative. Look at the other common short races, at least they are fairly visually distinct from the standard of humans. Dwarves are stockier and thicker and hairier, halflings are more childlike and softer/chubbier plus the big feet, goblins are green and have more exaggerated features. Gnomes though just look like literally scaled down humans with no different proportions.
So yeah, prefer goblins as clever tinkerers, halflings as the mischevious curious sort, and kobolds as meticulous schemers. Gnomes bring nothing to the table.
Races that are just humans with special abilities and maybe different color. Shit like Genasi or Chiss from Star Wars. Elves get a free pass because they actually are supposed to have physical differences.

However you come to realize that those bonuses don't stack up against the almighty bonus feat, bonus skill point, and floating +2 bonus to any stat you want that humans get, not to mention that humans almost always get the best favored class bonuses and the ability to poach racial features and feats from other races.

What? -2 CON is a huge disadvantage, there aren't many characters who really need both DEX and INT, and the other bonuses are all pretty minor. They're really only good for wizards, and even then you're probably better off playing a human or even half-orc.

They're old, outdated, won't run on many modern machines, and buggy as hell. The only "good" drow I play are more not actively malicious drow. Don't have any plots to knock over a kingdom, will not sacrifice people to my goddess, more than happy to go along with what the party is doing, because it's profitable to my continued existence. Also pays well.
Will torture for information, will sadisticaly maim people who don't have the sense to go away when I warn them first. Will use poison, including putting mummy rot in food to kill targets. Will use reanimated corpses for manual labor.

Even then, if you succeed you're still taking a nasty effect anyways so really, it's just better to keep an okay CON and focus your real stats on more important shit anyways.
Also, nobody bothers using poison anymore since since monsters are immune or have huge CON scores that cannot be overcome with even the most potent of poisons anyways.
