Mine ran $450, it'sa T510. I can play anything from 2004 or earlier without issue. Getting a bit long in the tooth, but built like a brick, quite portable, quite durable, resilient and interchangeable parts (that are a snap to replace, if you need to)

Build your own desktop for less money, use the leftover money to buy a cheap netbook for school. Laptops are utter shit, especially for gaming, as you need to take the whole thing apart to clean the internal fan every year or else the laptop will die.
