Obviously quickdrawing your blade from something like pic related is not going to be elegant or quick. But I do think that if you need to carry a great sword for a long time this is one of the more comfortable methods. Just make sure that you have a backup weapon in case of getting ambushed or some method of quickly taking the sheath off of your back so that you can then draw the sword.

That's only true if the sheath is secured near the bottom for some reason. If it is secured near the top you can draw smoothly and the sheath just follows your movement and points backwards.
