Let's talk about sheaths.
>>
How secure would this be?
>>
>>46836161
In the way when you sit, but it'd be difficult to prevent from drawing or draw from behind.

Also, minus 10 horse points for carrying two swords.
>>
>>46836161
Pretty insecure, because I'd sheathe my sword in datass.

I approve of her sheaths.

I'd definitely put my blade in both of them.

Sheaths on the back...

Obviously quickdrawing your blade from something like pic related is not going to be elegant or quick. But I do think that if you need to carry a great sword for a long time this is one of the more comfortable methods. Just make sure that you have a backup weapon in case of getting ambushed or some method of quickly taking the sheath off of your back so that you can then draw the sword.
>>
>>46836161
That shit'll flop everywhere if you trying drawing it while charging.

^ This. Back sheathes are impractical. Simply drawing your weapon leaves you far more open than if you kept it on your hip or just held the damn thing. Even larger two-handed weapons were normally sheathed at the hip, if they were sheathed at all.

Or nominally, thrown on a cart if one was available, because fuck carrying shit when you're marching for miles on end.

The logic in them is that they're artisinal weapons and every single thing from their manufacture to their use is intended to be challenging and impressive.
They're literally weapons designed to create a difficult challenge for the user so as to impress other Hunters.

Technically all the hunters are superhuman blood drinking beast people. Most of them fight blindfolded.

There's also some amount of eldritch knowledge and possibly blood magic going into their construction. They are also leveled up through something that can only really be called blood magic.

Mind helping me out here?
>His body was well proportioned as regards height and breadth and just as it should be. And an indication of his height is that when he belted on the sword Gram -- it was over five feet long -- and walked through a field of full grown rye, the scabbard-chape brushed the top of the standing grain.
I read this and now I'm trying to figure out a rough estimate lf how tall Sigurd Sigmundsson was according to the Völsunga saga. Rye standing up tends to be somewhere around 100-120 cm tall depending on when it's been planted. I don't really know how he would have worn his sword, though. If it was just straight down or at an angle. He most likely wielded the sword with one hand, since his shield is also described in detail.
>>
>>46844764
"Belted" would imply having it hang from the belt, as usual. usually, swords don't dangle straight down, but at a bit of an angle, so it wouldn't be five feet between his belt and the top of the rye, more like 4, maybe 3.5 feet.
>>
>>46844877
So adding at least another meter to that, it still comes out to roughly five feet between his belt and the ground he's standing on. Maybe ten feet tall in total, very roughly estimated?
>>
>>46845073
a meter is a bit longer than 3 feet, so it would come out at more like 6-7 feet between belt and ground. Sigurd was clearly pretty damn huge.
>>
>>46844877
>>46845073
Although it's worth to ad that both then and now, storytellers usually had a pretty shitty sense of scale. He was probably not intended to be twice the height of an ordinary person.

You still open up your whole body drawing it, even if it is faster. Just carry it over the shoulder and have a full scabbard for when you have no intent on using it immediately.

It's not like you don't have a backup smaller weapon or two on hand after all, right?

Right?

I'd wager that with practice it takes no longer to draw this than any other sheathed sword, 3 seconds max. If you're close enough that draw time time is a factor, you're better off just pullin a dagger and closing to grapple.
>>
>>46847646
Maybe. If it was a part of someone's character's outfit I'd allow it, it's not a huge deal.

I just feel like I'd be uncomfortable drawing a blade from over the shoulder and exposing my whole torso to attack, fast or not. Your dagger+grapple idea feels like a better alternative as long as I've been sensible enough to wear armor.
>>
>>46847721

Back sheets sucks because you expose your armpit when drawing you weapon. The armpit is very vurnable for stabbing. You could potentially stab someone all the way into the heart through the armpit without having to go through any bones.
>>
>>46836294
You can also make use of two pistol holsters if magasines is not a thing in the period or setting. Pirates in the Caribbean would cary several loaded flintlock pistols on them because they were impractical to reload in the middle of a fight.
>>
>>46836583
The problem with a sheath on the back is simply drawing the blade in the first place. It simply doesn't work, arms are simply not long enough to draw most swords from the back

something like that isn't terrible if you absolutely have to carry it over your shoulder, but honestly if you've got a horse get him to carry it and if you plan on using it soon then just rest it on your shoulder until you want to kill someone.
>>
>>46847646
>I'd wager that with practice it takes no longer to draw this than any other sheathed sword, 3 seconds max.
3 seconds to draw a sword is extremely long, like 6 to 10 times what it should normaly take.

>>46852499
That's only true if the sheath is secured near the bottom for some reason. If it is secured near the top you can draw smoothly and the sheath just follows your movement and points backwards. If it's rigidly secured in the upright position though, then yeah, it's tricky to draw it out without bending over and asking a friend.
>>
>>46847368
Why are you spergs discussing this like you are constantly walking around getting attacked without your weapon in your hand?

It's not a samurai anime, you are allowed to cut someone without drawing your sword in the same move every time.
