Because the DM ruled that if I use the shield as an improvised weapon to bash someone in the skull then I don't get it's bonus to AC. Also, I can't kick as an unarmed attack while holding things. And even if I could, I'd only do 1+mod damage because I didn't take monk levels

So I have a silver longsword with my shield

The Sage Advice compendium and anyone who asks about Dueling with Sword and Board says it's ok. So I would assume that it is all good. The +2 would go to the weapon attack and you only get d4 damage, which will be next to nothing beyond level 4. So I say go for it and just attack cause why not.

Yeah, so it would be for anyone who doesn't have a bonus action for free damage.

Technically cause it's a "weapon", you could go two weapon fighter and add your Str to the hit. D8+3 + d4+3 + 2 AC sounds pretty good.

It's literally right in the text about shields.

In any case, when I'm playing a knight, my duty is to protect my charge at all costs. My body is their shield, and my armor is mine. Sometimes I'll use a shield and sword, other times my hand is occupied by their arm so I can keep them in place to bash them longer. At other times still, it's best to use a far-reaching weapon to keep them from approaching us at all.

For example shields, your shield hand is useless, basically like having a stump once you grab the shield, so you can't use crossbow/shield and stuff...BUT if you're a divine caster you can use your shield hand to perform whatever somatic component you want. And like this tons of other stuff that can be summed up to "this is like a videogame, you can't jump here because we say so, but you can jump there because we say so".

You wouldn't be able to move.. but you would be untouchable. somehow.

Why is it that equiping armor makes you harder to hit? wouldn't it make more sense to give damage reduction (and be easier to hit because of the weight?)

Well on the other hand D&D is all about making up your own rules if you don't agree, the DMH has a bunch of stuff about substituting effects for other benefits

As a DM if you really wanted to have two shields I would say go ahead, you'll get 4 AC and only d4s unless we start talking feats. You'll do no damage early on and then almost negative damage later into the game but 20 base AC at level 1 can be cool.
