Hey hightech lowlifes.

I have a last minute cyberpunk game (cyberpunk 2020) coming up, and I am short on any new street level hooks. Any suggestions?

Dumping cyberpunk pics.

Can someone explain what differentiates cyberpunk from science fiction set in a futuristic dystopian setting?

Cyberpunk IS science fiction set in a futuristic dystopian setting, but it became it's own genre in the 1980s precisely because it broke away from the old futuristic dystopias of the 50s/60s/70s and added it's own punk elements, such as gritty street characters (and not heroic scientists/commandos), grungy street tech, and most importantly hacking/cyberspace/virtual realty, which was a new thing back then.

Also, cyberpunk settings aren't dystopias 300 years from now on the planet Zorglarax, they're extrapolations of current trends and fears 50 years into the future, with actual countries (like the US, Japan, Russia, etc.) that exist today. They're not completely invented scifi but try to stay grounded in extrapolations of current tech, politics, economics and culture.
>>
>>46753917
While I've loved every piece of cyberpunk I've encountered, it seems like an oddly specific subgenre with several prerequisites to have as much popularity as it does.

Is there a list of nomenclature for other subgenres of science fiction anywhere? It would be interesting to learn what separates them from each other.
>>
>>46753286
Cyberpunk is a sub-class of science fiction dystopia. Basically there are a whole bunch of traits a science fiction dystopia can have that are associated with cyberpunk. A setting becomes cyberpunk when there are enough of these traits present. Because no one can agree which traits are cyberpunk or how many a work needs to be considered cyberpunk it's very difficult to discuss the genre outside a group of core classics.

For me, what most cyberpunk literature and rpg completely miss is the squalor of the slums. The children searching through garbage to find some food, the teenagers selling their asses to corporate dirtbags to pay for their daily dose of dorph, the gangs who produce snuff SimStim and sell the victim's organs to some Chinese bodybanks, corrupt cops ransoming poor people who try to make end meet, etc.

Probably the best thing in this regard was the comics Rank Xerox. It was dirty, brutal, and vulgar.

I'm going to be lazy and just point you to this. There are better references out there, like the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, but those aren't free in their entirety.

Have some cyberpunk works

Burning Chrome - Gibson
http://pastebin.com/zvmCZhNJ
I've got most of the short story collection from the book, if there's any others people want.

Pretty Boy Crossover - Pat Cardiagn
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bzy1xzxa-BxyVmFhUl9qcGg4WGs
Another short

Hardwired - Walter Jon Williams
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzy1xzxa-BxyeUg5NGoxTUhpXzg/view?usp=sharing
Bit more post-apoclyptic than most, but very good.

When Gravity Fails - George Alec Effinger
http://www.fiction2.com/when-gravity-fails-online-george-alec-effinger
Pretty good, an unusual middle-eastern/north african setting
pdf related is one of the novels for FFG's Android universe - not quite as pure cyberpunk, there's less drugs and not everything's shitty. Still okay though, and a good intro the the Android world

There are two rival gangs, with a long history of violence between them. At the moment, an uneasy peace has been struck.

The leader/2IC (better option, desu) of one of the gangs has been murdered and it looks like the handy work of the rival gang. But one of the other gang members (from the dead guy's gang) has his suspicions, and asks the players to investigate. Maybe it's the leader of the (dead guy's) gang, trying to stir up tension and shore up his position. Maybe the dead guy was instrumental in brokering/helping the peace, and the leader didn't like that. Maybe it was a third party that wants to weaken both in order to move in on one or the other (or both) gang's turf/operations. Who knows?

Cyberpunk works best in my opinion when not everything is a heap of crap, indeed most of the setting should be reasonably decent to live in, even if you aren't rich, much like the real world in fact(not to mention if you push the dystopic aspects too hard then things just become tedious to read about)

Holy shit, your comment made me realise (kinda dumbly, given my own DOB, but then I am drunk) that it'll be but 2 years that post-millennium births will be >18

I'm also pretty interested in seeing what the history books of the 2050+s say about the turn of the millennium - other than 9/11 and the crash of 2008, which kind of make the '00s a "decade" that only lasted 7 years

At least we got to see/be part of the rise of the internet, I guess, and important shit is being done, science-wise
