There is propaganda everywhere, there is actual mind control, dissidents disappear never to be heard from again, and personal freedom is hardly even a thing. Well first he left the rest of the Tau while his job was to recover worlds taken by chaos, in part because he learned that the leadership of the Tau were aware of the forces of chaos but kept them a secret because the existence of chaos is inconvenient for their propaganda. Second he has a sword that may be a daemon weapon of some sort, or it might be a necron thing, or something the old ones made. Though I know of nothing about chaos influence on Farsight that isn't fanwank.

The Dawn Blade is an alien artefact of unknown origin. A normal Tau, besides the Ethereals, live about 40-50 years top without methods to prolong the lifespan. Farsight has lived over 300 years. The Dawn Blade steals the life of those it kills. Since he has killed Orks, Tyranids, and Daemons, he's defacto immortal now.
There's a prophecy that says that after the events in Kauyon and Mont'ka (which went exactly as predicted) he's destined to either become Tau's Greates Hero or Tau's Greatest Monster. He has been travelling for a while to master his fate.

The whole "chaos influence" thing is never mentioned in any official lore I've read, and I'm pretty sure I've read everything that isn't Black Library. I don't see why chaos would even give much of a flying fuck about the Tau unless they literally accidentally spill blood on a daemon shrine of Khorne like they did at Arthas Moloch.
