Have you ever commissioned art for a character in a game you've played or run?

How did it go?

Pic not related, just the first picture I could find in my folders that looked like it could be from a character design process.
>>
>>46496955
It was from the draw thread but the artist took me through the entire commission process.

i explained in detail what I was looking for he sketched up a few poses I selected my favourite, we sent emails back and forth as he requested details or nuances of the character being portrayed.

Had I the art on my phone I would post it but Bentusi was a real gentlemen about the art. Absolutely fantastic. That character turned into one of my favourites, but for the ending of the campaign.

A friend and GM I game with gave me a commission for one of my characters as a christmas present, pic related. The same artist has drawn almost our entire group as well as a good chunk of our NPCs, which gives the game a really nice consistent theme.

I've also got an ongoing commission at the moment, an artist was doing half priced magical girl commissions during April, and I jumped at the chance to get some cheap art done for a character of mine. It's pretty cool to have nice custom art of one of your characters.

Depends on the artist.

I tend towards 'At least $50 USD if it's a full colour character'.

I recently commissioned Weremole for $90 USD and don't regret it at all.

You can find cheaper but they are either not very good artists or dramatically underselling themselves.

It's down to the artist's skill and what you're requesting. For uncoloured line-art or a sketch of a single character, the max would be 25USD. For full colour, I'd say 50USD is a reasonable, and if you're asking for a background, 75 to 100USD. Add between 50 and 100% extra for each additional character.

The most I ever paid for a single character was $140. But that was a semi-lewd where the artist also designed an outfit based on some random references.

It's just best to look around various sites and find artists, see which styles appeal to you, what their prices are, what their rules are (Some artists really try to boss you around) and ETA of completion. Like the artists Jadenkaiba does some pretty decent work for the fees they ask for but will take 3 to 4 months to get a single drawing done.

Just sharing a commission two of my friends got of their characters from their on going game.
>>
Since /ic/ is mostly assholes who seem to discourage anything at all, I'll ask here.

What are some ways artists can set themselves up to offer commissions?
>>
>>46499442
Deviantart journals, FB pages, Tumblr post shares. these are the ones i know of.
>>
>>46499520
To expand on that, advertise with definite prices and examples of what you're willing to do for those prices. $10~ is reasonable for a quick sketch, but i've had them as low as $5 with some impressive results. the artist community will tell you to do what you're comfortable with, within your skill level. (i look at a lot of it this way: cheap sketches=getting paid to practice, and people eat up good ones)
now, you'll obviously need a paypal in addition to that. best way to take commissions is half or full upfront. never do a commission without getting something upfront. the art world is full of cheapass ripoffs.
after that, tell your network and ask them to tell their network through shares or journals that exhibit your examples. you should be fine to get commissions, and you will assuming your skill level and prices are decent
>>
>>46499614
Also, a note on revisions: only do them for commissions that have a final product, such as lineart or full color. sketches shouldn't get revisions, so make sure to tell the clients you need good references. i recommend 1-2 revisions at most when doing a bigger commission. these ensure people won't waste your time not telling you exactly what they want (which is an artform in itself).

Commissioned a bunch of stuff for a homebrew RPG a while back. I found that some of the artists were goddamned awesome to work with, some were cheap, some were timely with their work, and a couple were all of the above.

If you comb through Deviantart you'll find a bunch of people willing to do small batches of custom illustrations. It seems to me that the trick is to work with somebody that puts up fresh work frequently and is mostly doing it as a hobby. It being a hobby keeps the price down; they were going to doodle something anyway, you're just subsidizing their art habit. Professional artists know what their time and expertise is worth, and that's probably more than you really want to spend.
>>
>>46501436

Best bet is comb through DeviantArt. Try searching for characters that you like to see if you spot an artist that captures what you like about them. When you find some artists that look up your alley check their Tumblr to see if they link other artists they like.

Also, if you don't mind NSFW sites try something like Hentai Foundry. Found some good artists there for some safe drawings as well.
>>
>>46502546
I'll keep that in mind, though I'm not a fan of DA.

It sounds like an awful lot of work to blindly search through a website for something that meets your criteria. I'm on 4chan though, so it's not like I don't have the time.

Any additional tips for commissioning?

I commisionned this big science-fiction/apocalyptic piece almost a year ago, it illustrated a very old game I had with my 3 best bros.
We don't play this particular game anymore, so I don't really know if it's on-topic, I had it done mainly so I could gift it to my one bro who was coming back from the military, each person on the pic has a copy of it.

It was super expensive and I don't recommend this kind of commission to anyone who just wants a visual for their character, but it brings me a warm feeling when I look at it, despite it being generic as hell and quite messy.

>Have you ever commissioned art for a character in a game you've played or run?

No, but I once played in a game where the DM commissioned quite a bit of art from this one girl, eventually inviting her into the group, dating her, and making an absolutely incredibly disturbing comic with her which they then pulped for fear of legal repercussions.

It was an interesting experience.

One thing when checking for artists, take a look at the journal/Tumblr entries. If they post status updates frequently you may want to look at that as a yellow flag... I've had two artists have mental breakdowns mid-commission on me due to whatever reason and the commissions got delayed for nearly a year. Both of them constantly posted journal updates about their daily bullshit.

Hell, you can also try the E-Hentai galleries; just filter down to Western.

I've told it a couple of times before. It was this weird, weird project, which started off because of a conversation I had with the guy about magic in gaming; how it operated as a kind of "fifth force physics" (His words, not mine) because you have to have mechanical representations of what PCs and NPCs can do, so magic has to be very structured.

He was interested in writing something where magic was fundamentally chaotic and unpredictable and random, and in thematic pursuit of this, children are the most powerful mages around. Not every child can cast spells, but magical talent usually manifests at around 4-5, and then steadily declines, to the point of being near useless when you're in your teens. (it never goes away entirely)

Then, (and I think this was her influence, but I'm not sure) it started adding a bunch of furry stuff, and you had what was actually a pretty well developed world about how various tribes of different humanoids get together and interact. The main story takes place in a quasi-venetian style state, where the protagonist Kentrith is a 5ish year old orphan who has the magic. He's about ordinarily powerful, but he's extremely, extremely bright, and as a consequence, can be far more effective at implementing what magic he has than most children. The city attempts to draft him, and it ends with him turning the current "guardian" inside out and installing himself as the new guardian. He drags along his surrogate mother, making her one of his advisors. He then leads the campaign, wins a battle, goes home, and has this extremely disturbing scene where it's not quite rape with the surrogate mother, but he does force her to sleep in his bed after he dissolves her clothes.

I have not myself, but one of the players in my group has apparently gotten pics of every PC and a few NPCs, barring my character. It's understandable, given my character is the token "out there" race and worries on how well the artist would handle something of such drastically different design wouldn't be too far-fetched.
Still kind of upsetting they never bothered asking, but I'm not gonna be that poorfag that's like "hey, spend money so I can have a character pic". Didn't even have a vision for the character until a few months back.

I paid $50 for this commission of my Dark Heresy assassin. The guy does a ton of Warhammer 40k artwork so I decided, 'why not?'

Quite happy with how it turned out but it wasn't 1:1 with what I had in mind.

$50 is usually what I'll charge for commissions too, but it depends on how detailed folks want their character portraits, or if they want it coloured or with backgrounds.
>>
>>46518565

Yep. It's a game in the Nanoha setting, and my PCs backstory is that they were an unfinished Scaglietti Cyborg. Her incomplete body was found in a tank in one of Jail's labs after he was defeated, but she was deemed to be alive, so they completed her as much as was necessary to let her live normally, had her adopted by a couple who worked in the TSAB and saw how it went. The name 'Tazzari' was given to her by her adopted parents, but Jail designated her Quindici, or 15.
>>
>>46518639
Did the artist get an okay before finalizing the piece and, if it was digital, did they allow for a limited number of adjustments in the tightened piece?

>>46518832
I'm not exactly sure, he sent me scans so it looked like he did the work on paper. However, it's pretty much my fault for not specifying things to an absolute tee. I had given him some reference material. In the end I was still really pleased with it, so it's not a big deal.

Still, I think you're right, he did not put in the level of detail of pic related, if you know of other artists who are capable of this kind of stuff, give me their names because I'm definitely interested for future pics.
>>
>>46518664

I'm surprised a GM would allow that but then, you are playing in an anime setting. Standards are likely low for that sort of GM.
>>
>>46520565

Well, there are a lot of qualifiers, both in the game and in the setting. As an unfinished clone, Tazzari's augmentations were incomplete, so her actual combat potential was well below her elder sisters of The Numbers. Mechanically she was on par with the other PCs, a relatively weak linker core and magical ability supplemented by her Combat Cyborg systems. The game is set in a TSAB academy with a group of recruits, so our PCs are all well below the power level seen in the actual show.

I was thinking about getting our party drawn for a guy going into surgery soon, but I have no idea where to even start looking for people to do it, nor even a rough ballpark figure for cost.
