Sidney came from a mundane version of Earth that has no known ethereal presence. Despite this, after being inducted into the Travelers she found her mind touching the ethereal at all times. While an initial shock she quickly grew accustomed to unseen forces permeating her mind. She had an inquisitive nature, wanting to see and experience everything - including the ethereal, which began to fascinate her. The interest led her to undergo experimentation by Bio through the overclocked chips.
Her first mission was to a warzone of a timeline, Terra-D2342, to destroy a demonic superweapon known as the "the heart". She accompanied a more experienced Traveler, a popular Fighter who enjoyed working with new recruits. After reaching the heart, their weapons proved unable to pierce the hard shell of the artifact.

They didn't have much time before the demons would notice their presence and swarm their location, potentially forcing a retreat and losing the artifact. So Sidney volunteered using her overclocked abilities to crush the heart.
Judiciary would later determine this to be a disastrous mistake; as her mind brushed against the heart, she felt its corruption far more acutely. Bio would later testify that using the overclocked chip likely left her mind weakened and vulnerable.
Her memory became faded at this point. The next clear memory is her partner on the ground, dead, along with the broken heart. The following investigation could not determine whether she killed him and then destroyed the heart, or if her partner died to destroy the heart and prevent her from suffering permanent corruption.
Years had passed since then, and while the details of the investigation were never made public, many blame her directly or indirectly for their fellow Traveler's death. She has since found some manner of peace through meditation and The Order of Good Thought and Action, but the tragedy has left her cautious of fighting.

Depends on your mental state and how much power you are using, the strain of the minds of others, the pre-existing condition of the unseen worlds, your own power, etc, etc.
To be honest the least a recruit to the travellers will do is give himself a concussion and level a building, at worst you'll level a mid sized region, popping your body like a ripe grape and do some serious damage to the spiritual world possibly tainting it nightmarishly until Ethereal or someone else shows up to clean it, but that is only if your whole build is devoted to Super Saiyan Space Bullshit. Is this your first CYOA? Neat idea but could use more work, and not just in the presentation. Disease protection needs to be given. Indigenous people are very likely to kill you on the spot without Fitting In.
There was another CYOA where the reader gets sent back in time, but that CYOA gives strong powers AND complete immortality. If you want to go this route you need to give people at least minor supernatural abilities like disease immunity.
If you want to improve this, think through what someone in modern times would need to survive in the past. It's actually quite a lot.
