Epic thread because why not?
Show us your legions, tell us your memories, etc.

Starting question:
Which do you prefer? E40k with its firepower tables, or EA with its unit individuality?
Answers of NetEA, Space Marine, or Adeptus Titanicus will be disregarded unless backed up.
>>
>>46453681

Those 30k models look fucking awesome. Wish I knew how to get them.
>>

Was going to bump with beginner's guide, but my phone won't find it in the uploader. Does anyone have any suggestions for a general copypasta?
>>
Anyone else started trying out the epicAU rules for Heresy Era battles? Rules are available here: http://epicau.com/mw/index.php/Main_Page.

Unrelated, but has anyone else found that they're drawn to different factions in Epic than they are in regular 40k? Because I've really found that Imperial Guard, Iron Warriors, Nids, and the like really come into their own when the really big toys (relatively speaking) start coming out to play.

NetEA is the continuation of EA. Did you meant NetEpic would be disregarded? NetEpic and NetEA are not the same.

Anyway, Epic Armageddon/NetEA. Apart from anything else it's the only game system that still has a large community.

>>46454863
The core tournament scenario works OK at 2000pts. Most tournaments play 3000pts.

At 1000 points you'll need to modify the objectives (see: minigeddon), but it's fine for a first rough of the rules.

I ran an intro game on vassal last week at 2k.

>>46455668
Damn, I didn't notice that. Shame, here I though someone had figured out how to make masses of incredibly detailed, incredibly tiny 30k space marines.

I made a whole bunch of paper counters (+- 1000) in a couple of factions to play the game, I quite liked it although I have only ever played it without titans and air-units. I have units for every major faction ready to print and play though, which is great.

Oh wait nvm, I lost them when my computer crashed last time. Atleast I still have the paper counters.
>>

>Which do you prefer? E40k with its firepower tables, or EA with its unit individuality?
>Answers of NetEA, Space Marine, or Adeptus Titanicus will be disregarded unless backed up.

NetEA *is* E:A, just with fan support. It's the same game. I suppose if you want me to spell it out: NetEA is what people actually still play, it lets you play other army lists not in the original Armageddon book, and is freely available for download as opposed to spending $30 on a rulebook. E:A miniatures are out of print, and while you can do counts-as, you can also buy from Troublemaker, Exodus Wars, Onslaught, etc... in which case those NetEA army lists become really useful.

But it's all hairsplitting. If you play NetEA and someone insists on playing E:A, then it's no probem. All E:A army lists are valid in NetEA with only occasional errata-tier changes. It's essentially the same game. You'll see more differences between gaming circles from house rules and playstyles than you will between RAW of these two games.
>>
>>46453689
Those are 28mm figures.

There are people making 6mm equivalents, but they're illegal to sell. So... unless you find a friendly recaster, the only thing to do is buy some used minis on eBay or 3rd-party minis, join the Tactical Command forums, paint and post photos of your stuff, and then people will know you well enough to respond to private messages. Until you have a post history, they have to assume you're a GW spy.
>>
>>46455825
Sort of... NetEA is just the group developing army lists for Epic Armageddon. They haven't changed the rules, which are still based on the Oct. 2009 revision to EA.

But yeah, the post you responded to probably meant NetEpic, the fan continuation of 2nd edition (aka Space Marine or SM2).

That’s the life of an Epic player right now. But if you manage to become pals with some forum guys, there are miniaturized Cerastus knights to be had. They might not go well with the old ones though.

Onslaught Miniatures is working on some not-knights that look a little more like the classic models. They might be months away, but keep an eye out. (In the UK, Vanguard Miniatures will sell them too.)

>>
>>46463402
Resinbro has old Knights and new forgeworld style cerastus knights.
>>
>>46463283

>>46465329
Ah, good to know.
>>
So do we have any advocates for editions other than 4th (Epic Armageddon) in here? I've never tried them.
>>
>>46465848
Epic: space marine and titan legions was fun but the rules and balance were really off and exploitable. Titan legions fixed many rules problems but the points and stats for broken units remained and a whole new subset of minigames were introduced to manage the mega gargants and the imperstor. Fun, but time consuming and broken.

Epic: 40k had excellent rules for generating flavourful terrain and the models were great. Many great ideas. The end result though was awful. Units got abstracted into firepower tables that just encouraged unfluffy min maxing, fielding the optimal unit in multiples. Lots if not all the individuality and quirks of the different unit types were absent. The orks suffered particularly in this. Also the landraider with the op anti tank shot rule broke the game all by itself.

Epic: Armageddon took all the good aspects of earlier editions and built a fantastic game of maneuvre and individuality of models with great opportunities for tactics. NetEpic: A fixed the balance issues and added all the flavours of army lists that you could ever want. Grot army? Eldar titan legions? Fucking gene stealer cult with stolen russes and an armoured limo for your patriarch? I It has it and more.
Also the armies play like they should I feel. Marines are few, tough as shit and hard as fuck to play, you need to master their mobility but boy does it pay off when you do. Eldars are even more mobile but brittle as hell. And Imperial Guards...are terrifying. The biggest guns and hordes of cheap troops, unsubtle sluggers.
I'm rambling aren't I
>>
>>46466689
How do Orks play?
>>
>>46466689
>NetEpic: A fixed the balance issues and added all the flavours of army lists that you could ever want.
Just to avoid confusion - you're still talking about Armageddon and not the NetEpic that seems to be based on 2nd ed?
>>
>>46466764
Proper orky. The order system really encourages you to storm forward and assault or shoot instead of aiming and actually hitting stuff. The rules are quite clever about this as other attempts would just force action on some die roll or similar or jut make the behaviour random according to some chart.
Lots off dakka with low chance of hitting, big mobs of everything, mekboy contraptions that are absolutely dedly, virtually no artillery and a big allowance for kustomization.
Also: gargants
>>
>>46466791
NetEpic: A(rmageddon) is based on E:A
NetEpic is based on Epic : space marine
>>
>>46464284
I'd say they're a bit too small for it. 31mm is like Marine sized and those basic infantry automatas are quite big.

most of the people interested in epic are already on taccom, the rest is just baiting people with forumware they don't have access to (which makes everyone resentful: the people who don't have it want it, the people who have it don't want it spammed into GW's attention)

Some time ago I bought the old Space Marine box set, and the rules for E40k and EA, but the box basically just has basic infantry and transports for Marines, Orks, and Eldar. Is it still fun without the variation?
>>
>>46475877
Not too bad. How much does it come with?
>>
>>46475877
Vanguard and Onslaught Minis are your friend in the Epic business.
>>
>>46475877
>just has basic infantry and transports for Marines, Orks, and Eldar
This will be enough to let you try the core rule mechanics and get a general feel for the game, but not much more.

One of the nice parts of E40k is the organic force building with detachments, which you won't get much mileage from with just 1 inf type + transports.

EA you could maybe do a bit more … but even the basic ork boyz formation needs some nobz. Depends how much you are willing to convert and proxy as well – add little turrets and launchers to spare rhinos to mark out preds, vindis, Wirlwinds and whatnot.

>>46477261
has a good point on vanguard, but note that they use a larger scale, so their vehicles will look bigger than the transports you have and their marine proxies are a couple of mm taller
>>
>>46478656
That’s true, I personally don’t like how big Vanguard’s vehicles are (talking about the Defeat in Detail product line in particular). But their infantry isn’t that bad. The not-Gretchin are right on, and their not-Nobz (leaders) are fine too because it’s okay for them to be large (though they’d dwarf the old plastic nobz). It’s okay for helicopters to be big, too. I haven’t seen the Skinner tanks so I can’t comment – but their superheavies are huuuuge. I think their human infantry is fine. Their not-Space Marine (novan elites) aren’t too out of place compared to later GW plastics, but too big to use with the original plastic beakies. I guess you could still use the not-Terminators.

Onslaught stuff is better scaled. It’s a little awkward that their not-Space Marine stuff is female, but it’s quite good. Their basic transport/tank is okay next to later GW Rhinos, but too big next to the old plastic ones. Another option is to get even more plastic Rhinos on eBay (they’re cheap) and get turrets on Shapeways to turn them into Predators and Whirlwinds.
>>
So I'm just starting out with eldar in NetEA and I have a big tournament coming up. Any advice?

>I'm bringing a Phantom titan
don't, bring a warlock titan. Warlock is a beast
>>
>>46481577
The European championships baby!
I'm bringing the phantom because that's what I have but also because it'll give me 250pts of air/space crafts.
I'm not sure what to spend it on though, a vampire or a spaceship
>>
>>46481776
If you have enough other stuff, I’d skip the titan altogether. And take Vampires, they’re great.
>>
>>46483523
But I want to play the titan.
It gives me a sturdy break their spirits unit and it can easily double all the game and threaten the blitz.
I know it has a lot of downsides
>lots of points
>fewer activations
>difficult to utilize
but knowing them I can hopefully play around them.
>>
>>46483880
The Phantom is actually fine. Only issue is that the Warlock titan is overpowered (in combined assaults retaining initiative), and Revenants are on the verge of being so. Its range lets it sustain fire quite often – as long as there’s something heavy to shoot at, it’ll be worth taking. But it’s not bad in firefights either. What else do you have?
>>
>>46474157

We just had a good one a few days ago. It takes time between them. The only way to get sustained multiple threads to hit the bump limit is to combine it into a specialist games general with BFG and Warmaster.

Or register at taccoms.

The first aspect formation with all those different aspects was a testbed. I'm going to settle for a mix of one cc aspect and one for ff. Maybe.

>>46484921
Sounds like a good idea. Mixes work well enough, though. I think you'll be fine.
>>
>>46484823
Ok I played a game with this list and I'm pleased with the formations in isolation, if not the composition of formations.
The only exception is the guardian unit, the wraithguard meant that my opponent just didn't bother to shoot at it but the speed was too slow for it do do anything significant. Replacing wraithguards with wave serpents is the way to go I think.
Falcons put out a surprising amount of dakka, as do war walkers.
Thinking of replacing the vampire with a space ship and giving that aspect some serpents.

>But those sisters look to be the work of our faithful lord and master -resin bro.

the infantry are all onslaught miniatures, still in production and publicity available from the onslaught webstore. That's only $34 in infantry bought new.

So whoever bought that got price gouged buying in production minis and $166 for 15 vehicles, 2 of which are stock rhinos. Pretty good way to exploit noobs on ebay who don't know about onslaught and vanguard I guess.
