Do yall ever bother reading fanfiction?
I've had the urge to write both serious and silly things forever, but been concerned that serious fans would hate it so badly that they send it to other fans to get them to send hate mail and dox and other crazy shit.
Is 40k fanfiction reviled for the number of snowflake worlds, gary stu primarchs, Improbable Main Characters and such? Or is the franchise so varied that even improbable or questionably written stuff can be good for the tech porn and culture schiz?
One of the silly stories I wanna write would be a Marvel Universe/40K crossover. World War Hulk, only instead of landing on planet Skar, Hulk winds up coming across Orks and adventuring across that universe.

People trying to copy Harry Potter And The Methods Of Rationality.
It was largely hampered by writers just not being as smart as they want these characters to be. People just want to write the regular story and shoehorn in their scientific knowledge and some transhumanist themes. They can't figure out how things would be completely warped by everyone being smarter than them.
The easiest way to salvage the genre is to keep the focus on the way people reason and how that affects them, but focus on people who reason poorly enough that you can still predict them. Which is why Harry Potter And The Natural 20 is the best thing to come out of it - every character has an internal rational process that makes sense, but all of their rational processes are deeply flawed.
I write plenty of shit. I sometimes people look at it and I hope they enjoy it, but I know they don't.

40k fanfiction is like any fanfiction, the vast, vast majority of it is a festering pile of shit, but sometimes you can find something genuinely great. There is a one I'm reading at the moment call Nothing But a List of Names to Mark His Ascension, which is a novelisation of the entire Darn Of War 2 games, and its better than most of Black Library's stuff, though I'd be the first to tell you that that isn't very difficult.

There were actually quite a few moderately talented writers, who were clearly intelligent in their own right. They didn't fail because of personal inadequacy, but because the genre they wanted was beyond a normal human's grasp.
Concept: a 40k version of the film Antz. An neurotic imperial citizen falls in love with a high lord, and poses as an Imperial soldier to see her. He then gets sent to the front line of a Tyranid invasion. He has to go along with it so he isn't executed. Shennanigans ensue.

The best answer to your opening question I can give is: "Sometimes".
"Sometimes" an idea that was conceived on crack and is artfully conveyed by a skilled writer whose inspiration unfortunately came from two (or, like, five) properties owned by opposing megamedia conglomerates can be amazingly entertaining. This results in fanfics lime "Shinji and Warhammer 40k" or "Harry Potter and the Natural 20".
"Sometimes" an author produces something in the perfect voice of the characters, only in a situation that the original property could never touch on.
"Sometimes" I just feel like fapping.
