I made a human sub-race for my setting that when reaching adulthood awakens a totem spirit.
Their body starts showing slight features of the animal in question like small patches of fur, the shape of ears changing, growing a tail or claws and hair/skin coloration changing. (Yes nekomimi ears and tails. No need for anthropomorphic animals because those draw in the crappy crowd who mastrubate to their pets).
The basic concept was taken from the totem barbarian but made to fit in line with racial features.
The race gets +1 to Con and +2 to another stat tied to the totem animal along with a skill proficiency.
Baer totem gets you +2 Con and Survival proficiency.
Wolf totem gets you +2 Wis and Perception proficiency.
Panther gets you +2 Dex and Stealth proficiency.
Monkey gets you +2 Int and Investigation proficiency.
Dragon gets you +2 Cha and Persuasion proficiency.
And Bull gets you +2 to Str and Athletics proficiency.

I have been in two games like this. One, run by a manchild DM tried to set up and deconstruct what he thought were "unrealistic female adventurers" in his "r e a l i s t i c Western European medieval fantasy setting" by having female NPCs be terrible at everything except domestic duties, complain about everything, and ends up dying in horrible ways if they ever go adventuring. Oh yeah, complete with annoying high-pitched voices for all of them. And who, oddly enough, didn't bat a fucking eye when a female player came along with a barbarian character.
The other, a game run by a strong independent white womyn who thought it would be a brilliant idea to use the game as a soapbox for how we should do something about the patriarchy by having us destroy the evil manlich that was threatening the genderqueer-friendly fantasy nation that was literally called Utopia. Two other players in that group were in the manchild group with me, including the grill player, so we kinda tried to conspire to take down Utopia and was rewarded with being castrated (and the grill player being declared a traitor IC and having her character's breasts be cut off).
Cue a few months later, after our college's spring term, and the three of us started our own game with two other players who turned out to be pretty chill. Both of those wonderful soapbox DMs ended up as NPCs in the Traveller game we played in, it was kinda great.
