Technically, it's the other way around since the lesser ones (except maybe Gabriel) are most in contact with Humanity. The highest, the Seraphim, have their wings (with eyes) completely cover their form. After that, there are winged wheels with eyes that are on fire and griffons (?) with Lion, Eagle, Bear, and Human heads that do nothing but sing the glory of God.

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend Unsong to you guys. It's about a world where in 1968, the Apollo 8 spacecraft crashed into the outermost Crystal Sphere (like the one described by Plato) and cracked reality itself, so the Archangel Uriel had to step in and do network maintenance on the world, which he's been doing ever since. Meanwhile, megacorporations have started patenting the Secret Names of God (which are basically spells), making this a theopunk dystopia setting. And there's an intermission between every chapter describing weird things about Kabbalistic magic.

When a picture is being used purely for inspiration, I find that the prior attached backstory becomes something of a non-issue. Looking at that picture in a vacuum, it's angel enough.
It's funny, a lot of the time I don't even want to know the story behind a piece of artwork, the series it's from, etc. because that might change the way I view the art. Associating it with something so specific could potentially make it less useful as a reference tool.

Not really. In the context of K6BD, the Thorn Angels could be considered to be closest to divinity, as each one is chosen and reformed into their new shapes by the Metatron, who still lives but is broken and crippled by his legendary battle with Zoss the Conquering King.
