Has it ever come up in any campaigns you've been in? Was it done well? What advice would you give DM's attempting this in their campaigns?

I have always been interested in RPG systems made specifically for playing characters with moral values completely different than the average person. The only ones I know of would be from White Wolf's systems.

blue and orange what?
>>
>>46348356
It's a dumb TVTropes term, but it basically means "this dude's got some weird values when it comes to ethics and morality".
>>
>>46348365
How am I supposed to interpret it? That the kid who wears a tie to a game is going to be edgy and someone who obsesses over bacon is going to be weird as fuck?
>>
>>46348356
Portals.
>>
TvTropes pls go
>>
>>46348525
Obsessing over bacon is absolutely normal pal. a healthy adult thinks about bacon at least ten times every day

It's called moral (and cultural) relativism.

Advice :
Assign values to moral items (or anything, but moral items and concepts are easier to start with). Best if the reason is left unexplained for truly foreign moralities.
Assign limits, group, and modus operanti, and quirks.

Example:
Knowledge has maximum value.
Limits : Secondary knowledge as no value.
Group : Nation. Other countries aren't considered part of the group.
Make the biggest library ever. Disregard copies and interpretations. Trading and pillaging the libraries of other countries is encouraged.
Quirks : People are expected to learn by selmselves. Anyone can go the the libraries, but teaching is rare and considered an inferior trade. Writing your own book is the goal of everyone's life.

Give them half a dozen values and you have something sufficient for a game.

Look for RL cultures to help you.
Example: Soviet military and NK vets with tons of medals everywhere on their uniform. Why? It's a matter of honor, commemoration, and being part of the group. That's values expressed in a particular way.
Now ask yourself how this impact them. How do people react to lots or the absence of medals? How and why are they given? What do the other people think of it?

Other example, for the road:
The Nk'trruh value Weather. They have developed their entire culture around it. They have a lot of cultural events based on the changes of seasons (and are excellent farmers). Changes in wind, temperature, rain or clouds have a massive effect on their psyche, immediate and long term. They are mostly unaffected by the night/day cycle. They can navigate pretty easily and make for pretty good guides and top-notch sailor (just kill them if there is a typhoon approaching, it's safer).
They cannot travel very far away because changes in climate are traumatizing for them and make them lose all their marks.

It means having a moral or philosophical system so alien that it cannot be conventionally described in a way that humans will be able to identify with or accept. The very precepts and senses of it are fundamentally incapable of being comprehended. It comes from a biology that we don't have, and an environment we can't occupy.
>>
>>46348553
This is probably me taking the bait, but I wonder:
Is there anything fundamentally wrong with the basic idea of TV Tropes?

Whether one can stand the community there is a different matter, as is the debate on the usage of the word 'trope' itself. But overall I find the idea of TV Tropes really neat, making it easier to communicate certain concepts and cross-reference them.

Bacon Should be replaced with Carnivore and Necktie should be replaced with Vegan.

Black&white morality = normie morality
blue&orange morality = frog morality

No, it was pretty good a long time ago, before they began to take themselves seriously and got rid of all the porn. It had its ups and downs, but basically it was people talking about cultural works they liked.
The website comes from a very human desire to classify things.

>>46350228
Vegans are clearly evil.
>>
>>46350210

Nope, it's a time sink though so I avoid it personally, but it's a cool way to codify culture, especially when it's not taken too seriously.

At the y axis on that should be replaced by whatever the core conflict aside from the other two axis there is in your game - in for instance Werewolf the Apocalypse, to give one example, the y axis would be "Weaver/Wild", which is sort of "lawful/chaotic" except that Weaver isn't just lawfulness but technology and exploitation of resources efficiently and safety and wild is nature and growth (and disease and danger).

Or in any of the Vampire games the X axis would be "beast/humanity", or in d&d the x axis would be "fun/not fun"

I've seen it done well in Dwarf Fortress, where elves are okay with slavery and canibalism, but find chopping down trees and using wood a grave sin.

I've seen it done less well in some sci-fi books, where the alien morality system is different just for the heck of it, and doesn't add in any fun but only makes the story more obtruse.

I'm not sure how a blue-orange moral system is done well, but I think it is best to just shift some familiar moral values to new places, just like Dwarf Fortress did.

This guy gets it. the X/Y axis is useful for adding something which doesn't fit in the normal moral compass.
>>
I use it quite frequently since I DM Dresden Files games and the Sidhe are well known for holding values very different to your regular human.
>>
I've mostly seen relatively amoral ayyliums as run by other GMs I play with, but I've definitely run a few ayys myself that were off kilter as far as what constituted moral good/evil.

They woke up and freed an ancient fucking ghost-demon thing which had been hooked up to function as the AI core for a now long derelict alien vessel, which had as its personal precept maximising the available choices for any sapient being near it, but not itself or anything outside its immediate vicinity. People who attempted to say, restrain someone, or lock a door, would be declared evil and devoured for the good of all. It encouraged a PC to disable all the docking clamps in the station they were in. It telepathically chastised people for closing doors for any reason short of death by depressurisation. Also, every single object containing life needs to have engines built onto it so they may control their fate. Therefore living on the surface of a planet is highly dubious and outright blasphemous if you have developed the technology necessary to not do so.
