It's an older PC version of a boardgame called Hornet Leader. The latest printing is Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations and it has more of an updated visual presentation.

The gameplay is great.

Been tempted to get into warfighter for a long time, but can't convince myself it's a better idea than just replaying jagged alliance or x-com.

$71 on Amazon. WTF did I miss?
>>
>>46343681

It's huge. HUGE.

Don't think of it as a board game like, say, Settlers of Catan. Think of it as a couple of fully fleshed out campaign boxes and a couple of core rule books.

Also wargames are more niche and so tend to be more expensive than normal board games.

Hornet Leader is pretty worth it though.

How long does a typical game last? What expansion is a must buy?
>>
>>46344240

A mission generally takes about half an hour to play. A bit longer for big missions. Quite a bit longer if you tend to get analysis paralysis.

The number of missions in a campaign is variable but generally between 3 and 20.

There is quite a lot of replayability.

IIRC the only expansion is The Cthulhu Conflict which gets a bit silly, as you might infer. It's not really a must-buy at all.

Just to be clear, Hornet Leader is a solitaire game. One player.

There are a few designed that way.

If you look at most "co-op" style board games like Pandemic, Arkham Horror, etc they are basically 1-player games. They give the illusion of control to multiple players but in practice it's only the person who is most familiar with the game who should be making any decisions if the players want to have a chance at victory.

I had my doubts about being able to have fun with a solo game, but Hornet Leader totally changed my mind. It's really interesting and really fun.

>>46345035

Anon is unfamiliar with Hornet Leader and so may be unfamiliar with wargaming. As someone who as only started getting into them recently, I can understand why - looking in from the outside, many wargames seem overly complicated, dry & intimidating

The reality is quite different - but there's not necessarily any way for people to know that without playing them. They have to find something they click with.

Never thought about it that way.

It's been a persistent problem in the co-op genre for such a long time that there's a phrase for it; "quarterbacking". It's generally more of a problem for older games, as designers are aware of the issue these days and try to design against it. Hanabi is a great example of a co-op game designed to prevent quarterbacking.
