So, how would you make a pre-established party to join a inquisitorial/witch hunter organization?

Story-wise the inquisitors would have looked for the kinds of specialists their organization needs and recruited them to the party so this allows (game-wise) the players to make the kinds of characters who come from diverse backgrounds and might not normally work together and there is no need for them to know each other beforehand (though the players can make characters who already know each other if they wish.)

I really like this kind of reason for the existence of the party. You see, I want there to be a reason for the PCs to team up and work together rather than just some DnD adventurer eggs hatching in the same clutch and deciding to stick together. Since an organization such us Inquisition (whether Warhammer or some other setting) is a large organization it can bring together all kinds of people as long as they have a motivation to work for the inquisition. (Depending on the setting "they threatened to burn me alive if I refuse" may be the motivation.)

Pay them.

Make them criminals.

This could be interesting as a cliffhanger to end an adventure.

Some players would probably cry about railroading and try to kill the inquisition.

...But I agree that it would be a nice way to start a new campaign.

So, which kind of Inquisitions does /tg/ prefers?

Sightly evil and corrupted, like the one in W40k? A political tool like the real Inquisition? An organization that fights against evil and is seem as 'bad' because of the extreme methods needed to fight the ultimate enemy?

How is the Inquisition in your setting?

Well, I have thing against torture so I feel that any "proper" inquisition is at least slightly evil. Whether it is also corrupt or simply fanatical and willing to do horrible, horrible things because they believe they are right may vary.

A mix of all three

There's the good the bad and the dumb

Set an entire game in a prison, characters start in a island prison dungeon as delinquents and have to solve a mistery and fighting ninghmaresh creatures created by a cult. Misterious figure NPC helps them through the quest.

Finally manage to scape island.

Surrounded by inquisitors, NPC appears "You did a good job there, now the real threadt awaits"
