But with all the Tarkir story there's always hope because the Dragonlords aren't as set in their place as the cards seem to make it. Surrak is one step down from Atarka, Ojutai either has major favoritism for Narset or is fine with people learning the truth now thinking he's got absolute power and Sulimgar has fucking everyone trying to betray him. The only Dragonlord that's safe is Kolaghan because Sarkhan still doesn't realize that this is the opposite of what he wanted, the exact thing that almost made him betray Bolas in Alara.
Gitrog Monster has deathtouch when with the story it clearly should of been First Strike with his tongue, flavour fail.

They come off as a pair of Mary Sues with how they are the only logical and capable thinkers in the village who can tackle anything and it isn't until the end when the finally meet their match and have some semblance of a threat to their lives that the story finally has that tone that it should have had from the start with the possessed woman plot twist and the mysterious werewolf with self-control.

What would be best: Both timelines crashing into each other, people plotting alongside their temporal duplicates, Kolaghan's first words being "ARE YOU SITTING ON MY FUCKING SKULL?", and general shenanigans as some of the Dragons-timeline humanoids rebel and some stick with the Broodlords...and some of the Khans-timeline humanoids decide to serve the dragons they've idealized for so long.
Also good: The humanoids rebelling and reforming the clans, taking out most if not all of the dragonlords. Possibly ending with humanoid/dragon coexistence (actual coexistence, not dragons ruling over puny humans).
What WotC is likely to do: refuse to kill off the dragonlords despite everything leading up to it, because they are marketable named characters, instead leaving the plane in Fate Reforged 2.0 at the end, but the humanoids worse off due to the thousand years of subjugation and loss of large amounts of everything, plus the dragons still having some number of humanoid servants. Yet somehow this will be stated to be 'Fixed and Better' despite making no sense. Oh, and three random things get retconned for no reason.

Which of the two timelines would you prefer? Khans, where we serve as a member of a clan earning prestige and fame with a certain responsibility to the codes and conducts of the clan? Or maybe the MC is just in it for bitches and the thrill, either or.
While I know it is unpopular the Dragon timeline would also be fun as the MC ekes out an existence alongside their clan members under the rule of the dragons, either honouring and genuinely serving their dragonlords or finding a way to rebel and maybe kill them, liberating the clan.It would be a difficult path and victory might be so bitter as to be hollow depending on how well the players do.

Yeah I would have tallied up some of the bigger life changing decisions and applied them to what mana the MC draws from.
We play a Mardu who really gets into complex battle strategies with a whole lot of feints and traps while trying to outfit the horde with better gear well when you unveil your secret weapon and wreck that abzan fortress? You're switching one of your manas out to blue with which one you lose depending on other factors.
Also agree on the second point. At most the MC would be a trusted commander, a favoured student, or some one with at least one noteworthy achievement under their belt. Not a head honcho by a long shot but at least someone with clout.
Would prefer to start it as a youngin' who's had only one or two tastes of battle.
haven't figured out the character creation process yet but I'd like it to be vague in the beginning with an organic build up that ends with a full starting character before the first thread is done.

Tarkir Quest guy here with a last few questions for the night.
So my current thoughts on how the first thread will go will be to have the MC begin during a raid on a rival clan, who will remain ambiguous. We will decide whether or not there are dragons present, which will decide which timeline we are in, then pick our clan. Afterwards we will decide on the MC's general disposition, role within the clan (players can choose to have left the clan) and our current objective.
The rest of the details like our spells and inventory I'll fill in myself, though if players request anything I'll consider it, as we then move ahead.

Given how en vouge Japapeese culture is and how Kamigawa failed because it was too highbrow (and also it sucked) what are your thoughts on a more weebish, anime and mecha video game style lore.
I say this because Duelmasters while JAPANESE AS FUCK is all made by americans in the same office as mtg so a really off the wall style set would be pretty cool given how formulaic mtg has gotten over the years.

There are plenty of other games that feature weebish/anime/mecha/vidya style lore. MTG is in a good place with plenty of room to breath within high fantasy.

I meant genrewise obviously. YGO isn't high fantasy, and hearthstone is almost as silly (not to mention digital only, and the WoW ccg died). MTG has the market cornered on serious tone fantasy, and it doesn't need to branch out from that to stay exciting to people.

They just need to get away from "return to __" sets and come up with some new interesting planes. Lovecraftian Eldrazi were a pretty cool departure from standard core fantasy the first time around, and now it just feels like they're cashing in. Zendikar is the set that got me into magic in the first place, and having new planes like Theros/Tarkir be horrendously underpowered and uninteresting comparatively, they're not doing themselves any favors.
