Have you watched Warhammer TV's tutorials with Duncan?

As he says
> You need to thin your paint so it flows properly off your brush, and use your palette to control how much you have on the brush
> You need a small brush
> On especially sharp edges you can run the edge of your brush along the edge at 45 degrees to it
> You might need to steady your hands on the table to keep your lines straight.
>>
Tried altering cards and failed today, I watched the MTG degree thing about making guru style lands and ended up blocking out half the card instead of just saturating it. I'm using citadel layers and I'm either putting on too much or its not covering at all.

Hey guys, gonna stop at the craft store tomorrow. Wanting to build a little terrain.

What is the stiff foam people sculpt and carve to make crumbled walls and fallen masonry and large boulders and stuff?

What's a good soft material I can use to sculpt some craters up and out of a flat, rigid base?

What am I looking for at a craft store when you guys talk about plasticard?

What are your best materials for cables, wires, etc. on weapons and characters? Guitar string? Wire? What kind, what size?

What is a material you love and want to suggest to other people?

>>46149903
Look up some video tutorials on youtube that show you how to thin and how thinned painted behaves. The guy who paints Miniwargaming's studio armies did a really good tutorial either on his own channel or MWG's.

It's less about a certain number of layers and more about getting proper coverage (no black showing through the primer) and a smooth coat where the brush-strokes aren't visible. Thus it depends on how thinned down the paint is and how good its coverage is. The great thing about thinned paints is you can apply a thin coat, let it dry, apply the next coat, etc. until you have just minimally enough coats to get the result you want and thus avoiding clogging up the details.

>Hey guys, gonna stop at the craft store tomorrow. Wanting to build a little terrain.

Hmmm... OK, do you have coupons for XX% off?

>What is the stiff foam people sculpt and carve to make crumbled walls and fallen masonry and large boulders and stuff?

Stiff foam? You may be thinking of insulating foam (pink stuff - pic related). You get this stuff at home improvements stores, though, not craft stores.

You can cut it with a hot knife, as I did, but it will look sloppy - which might not matter. You can also use a hot wire foam cutter. Finally, a right toofy steak knife will allow you do saw through it, but you'd better be prepared for a big mess.

>What am I looking for at a craft store when you guys talk about plasticard?

You're at the wrong store, m8. The craft stores I've been to (Michaels and Hobby Lobby) don't sell plasticard the way you want it. Your best bet is going to be model railroad or radio-controlled hobby stores.

>What are your best materials for cables, wires, etc. on weapons and characters? Guitar string?

Yes, guitar strings. Have a friend with a guitar? Ask him to salvage his old and broken strings for you.

>What is a material you love and want to suggest to other people?

Faith in The Emperor of Mankind.

>>
>>46150125
Well it'll probably still work. Definitely take your dudes out and give them an experimental scrub with your old toothbrush in the morning - it'll dfinitely pull a bunch of residue off and expose more to the alcohol if you have to put them back in.
>>
>>46150153
>craft store in question was a Michael's in the mall

Any time I happen to be around a Michaels with time and money to blow, I see if I can get a decent brush with a 40-50% off coupon; coupons that good are usually only applicable to your highest priced item, so just buy them one at a time. After a while, you can get a fair collection differently-sized brushes going.

What should I do for painting this? It's green stuff and metal mesh. It's pretty shoddy (mostly because doing it for 20 guardsmen gets tiring) but as long as you aren't holding it up to your face it looks alright.

So far I put nuln oil on it and drybrushed some gray on top of a darker gray
>>
>>46150549
There's some maths to do with respect to what's fair to charge- you don't have to charge this, but think about it.

> Keep a tally of what supplies you use (this is pretty easy)
> How many hours do you spend on this? (You might need to log this)
>What rate do you think that time is worth?
> Materials + Time * Hourly Rate = Money

You can then do your maths around that, taking into account how much you want to 'gift' him.
You might want to talk through this with him, so he doesn't get startled by you suddenly coming up with a massive figure out of nowhere.
>>
>>46150427
>>46150549
>>46150607
Charge him unit by unit, since some are no doubt going to be tougher than others. Finish one, work out how long it took you then discuss what you two think is a fair hourly rate for the quality of work you produced on that particular unit. Also maybe try different levels of detail for the smaller units like the Pink Horrors then show them to him and see if he'd rather shell out the extra cash for the extra work or if he'd rather settle for less detailed troops.
>>
>>46150965
I think he just wants basic coats, highlights, and shading, nothing too advanced, except maybe on the characters like the Bloodthirster/Lord of Change. Seeing as the next guy down on our painting hierarchy does 2 colors, no blending/drybrushing/highlights, and agrax in the crevices.
>>
>>46151037
Most daemons can be done by priming white, washing the appropriate color, than highlighting/shading and filling details.

No, I mean like how the (venerable) castaferrum has regular sized Marine helmets (and a regular sized marine torso hidden underneath the front plate), it's a bit silly that the contemptor gets a massive helmet instead. I always felt like it was a bit too big. And seeing how large those dorido and leviathan variants got, it sure could have used a bit pruning.
>>
>>46152260
It's from the Raven Guard vs Tau thing they did.
>>
>>46152310
You're right, barnacles' main purpose should be to hide imperfections in the conversions but I basically wanted to put them in places that stand out the most
>>
>>46152740

I think the Contemptor might be a situation where the helmet isn't the actual marine head, whereas the normal Dreads actually are.

That would explain the "advanced systems" and why we never see a helmetless Contemptor. The sarcophagus that houses the marine's torso seems like it would be a lot deeper into the Contemptor than on normal Dreadnoughts.

>>
>>46152820
Yeah. I'm just saying it might have been better if it was. The contemptor began a trend of bigger and bigger Marine walkers. The leviathans is insanely huge when compared to the old castaferrum.

>inb4 poorlittleblueguy.jpg
>>
>>46152825

He looks a bit oafish, so no cloak communicates that while he may look impressive, he is really more similar to the dumb muscle for, say, a sorcerer master.

If he is your commander, give him a cloak.
>>
>>46152857

I like the Leviathan. I want some bigger marine stuff that's not a tank or flyer, but not as ridiculous as the DK/Riptide/Stormsurge/WK fad.

Contemptors are still pretty small, and the Leviathan is just the right size to look huge without being actually huge. The Deredeo is the one that's a bit too big.

I wouldn't mind if Contemptors were the size of regular Dreads since they are cute and tiny, but I'd much prefer something like a 40mm Lord of War chapter master being able to solo a Knight. Sort of like the Necron C'tan.
>>
>>46152878
I'm all for big things that move, but I never got dreadnoughts as mini-knights, more like an upscaled power armour with life support. Surely if Marines need a walker, they can get one without needing to amputate the limbs of a brother. I always thought dreads were to give wounded Marines a chance to get back into the thick of it, fight more or less like they used to. If they pilots are just general purpose operating systems, why not stick them into tanks and flyers and shit as well?

Why not take the FW dorido and leviathan, and make them be non-dreadnought walkers that just take a full marine inside? Would explain the size, when you have to accommodate both the marine's limbs and armour.
>>
>>46152933
>Surely if Marines need a walker, they can get one without needing to amputate the limbs of a brother.

I never understood this either. I didn't even realize they were just floating torsos until the dioramas and artwork started being released.

Also the RT artwork showed the Contemptor and Deredeo pilots curled up in a ball.

My guess is if you're still intact enough to not require a Dreadnought you just got tons of cybernetics. The guys who go in Dreadnoughts are sort of like Robocop: you're not going to be worried about chopping off a limb or two.
>>
>>46152933

They don't put them in tanks because they don't have the technology. The closest equivalent would be a knight or a titan and those don't come with life support for the pilot either. Regular tanks are wired into the pilot but not like a Dreadnought is where the vehicle becomes your body like a titan.

We don't have fully armored marines in Contemptors because we have Centurions and the concept of putting armor inside armor is already stupid as we've been over 3 years ago and every day since when Centurions first came out.

You telling me that prior to and during the Great Crusade they could make walkers and various suits of armour for Marines, but not a way to put a sarcophagus into a tank to drive it?

>the concept of putting armor inside armor is already stupid

Pic related.

You know what's stupid? Not having a walker that you can't pilot without being a crippled vet. And what's even more stupid is making a Marine take off his armour when he gets into a vehicle, making him useless without that vehicles.
>>
>>46153074

I'm not saying they couldn't, I'm saying they didn't.

>pic related

No, it's not related, because marines already wear power armor inside their tanks. If you had a pic of a modern soldier wearing full battle gear and flak and kevlar while piloting a fully enclosed exoskeleton, then you'd have a related pic.

Guess what soldiers wear in all the modern combat exoskeleton frames being developed? NOT THEIR INFANTRY ARMOR.

Look like a Marine PA torso with some extra wiring and crap.

>why didn't they do it with Centurions

Because you're not entombed inside the centurion for the rest of your life. A Marine that hops on a bike doesn't take of his armour and thus wouldn't one using a centurion. It's not a suit of armour, it's a harness for carrying heavy weaponry you can hop in and out of just like that.

>>46153163
But we're not talking about dreadnoughts, we're talking about hypothetical Marine walkers that aren't dreadnoughts. If Marines wear their power armour inside space ships and flyers, why is a walker the exception?
>>

I'll post my advice, sometimes you just need to sit and watch someone do it. Once you get things right its the easiest thing in the world

>Use a well thinned paint, and make sure you haven't overloaded your brush. Something as trivial as a dropplet of water on the handle is a pain in the arse once it travels down through the bristles and onto the model where it spreads the paint everywhere you don't want it to go. A good edge highlight should take 3+ layers.

>Also don't use too small a brush. It's tempting to use a smaller brush for better control, but this means your paint will dry quicker on the brush. Use the largest reasonable brush available.

>Work in small stages. Resist the urge to try to run a highlight across everywhere at once. In this case >>46149355, just start on one of the many edges and once you feel the effect is good, move on to the rest of the model.

>Otherwise, the basic process is to use the side of the brush at an angle against the edge of the model.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.
>>
>>46148445
A bit of blended highlights on the models could give them a little oomph. I always loved the little grot in the rocket bit on the stormboyz kit.

Depends on the situation, being 160pts stock, with all my upgrades it's 225pts. I upgrade mine with a Helstorm autocannon (3 shot TL rending autocannon), TL lascannon and several warp pulse bombs for that sweet haywire/blind. Granted, it's only AV10, but sports 4 HPs and a 5++ daemon save and strafing run for BS4 on ground targets.

It can die easily, but it usually puts a big dent in whatever it flies over, as a bomber, be those vehicles of infantry. In the last match it brought a Typhon down to its last HP so that my deep struck Chaos Terminators felled the thing with chainfists.

Good for beginners, or single models.

If your looking to base an army, it's going to be cheaper per base to just make it yourself.

I work for a subsiduary of Walmart... we print some of our in-store advertising on a material that resembles foam-core (or foam-card, depending on your location) but isn't. Rather than having card on a foam center it has matte plasticard on a slightly softer plastic core.... so you can cut it easily but it's much tougher than foamcard and less reactive to solvents. The downsides are that we only use it for adverts that we don't plan on changing any time soon, and those tend to be small ones, so I can't get vast amounts of it. Just wish I could buy the stuff.

I think they looks alright.
If you want to brighten them up I'd take a stippling brush or a sponge and unevenly apply a skin color, yellow or a khaki tone. That way you could maybe get a mottled veiny skin effect out of them. Then just do a super light wash of purple or brown over that to add some quick shading and blend the brighter parts back in.

They look fine to me though.
I would have just continued washing individual nurglings with different colors to make them look a little less uniform from there.

My question is, how would you do this type of effect on the sword? I want it to be kind of molten and fiery. Okay from what I read it sounds more like it was a project Rick Priestley and Nigel Stilman were working on that was never finished. Later parts of the fluff and rules were used to write or it eventually became Necromunda.

Doesn't seem to be that obscure to me, since it never existed as anything but an internal WIP and announcement in WD.

Looks a bit like the cyber demon or a baron of hell from the new doom.

C&c for my girlfriend's work? What can she look to work on with her next few pieces?

Does anyone sell Felinid guardswoman heads?
How about guardswoman heads in general?

I bought some resin crystals for my Necrons a while back and they've developed a white coating that keeps coming back. What's up with that?
>>
>>46159845
That would be the resin oxidizing

is there any way to stop it?
>>
>>46159992
Prime it that way it wont be in contact with the air around it and everything will be fine
>>
>>46159992

Or if it's coloured resin that you want to see, varnish it.

Preesh.

They made the whole rule-set and even printed the box-art.... then decided it was too complicated and came back to it a long time later re-naming it 'Necromunda'.

I mean purely aesthetically how a thunderfire would look on the wivern platform.

And by "we" you must mean "certain loyalist marines."

I recently traded some stuff for a sicaran battle tank. I want to chaosify it up with some of these edgey looking treads, but I heard that the sicaran's treads are sculpted into the model. Do you guys think it'd be worth the effort to try and grind those down to put evil tank treads on it?
>>
>>46161974
They are moulded on. If you have a dremel or something it probably wouldn;t be that hard desu
>>
>>46161974
Probably not, honestly. It might look cool, but the amount of work and the resultant amount of resin dust sounds like more of a bitch than having a slightly less spikey tank.
>>
>>46161974
it would be very little effort with a dremel or flexshaft. mostly just messy. depends how important evil treads are to you.

I might grab them anyways. I can always use them on my land raider if I figure it won't work out. Has anyone tried putting these on a sicaran before? I'm a little curious about how they'll look on it.
>>
>>46162347
Most Sicaran tanks are owned by HH players. The whole spikes thing didn't come around until a few thousand years later.
>>

Would this kind of heat damage / tarnish show up on like a heavy machine gun? Or would it be only energy / plasma / fire weapons?

Fuckin' hell.

Anyways, what do about stains on the plastic? The models that were primed black have some black stains that I can't get rid of.
