Fate points make you roleplay to support the mechanics.
Most other systems use the mechanics to support the roleplay.

Here's my guess. With this many posts, I'm bound to be off quite a bit.

How many (Yous) did I score? Screencaps please.

In any case, anonymous, there are more productive fun things to do than troll people. Like, playing a TTRPG, for one. I have to wonder what exactly is going through your head when you posted this, and tried to stir shit up. Not in the sense of "Wow, ur dum", but in the sense of, what did you hope to achieve here? Is it so important to you to try to make people angry on the internet?

If you just want to laugh at other people, you can go on youtube, there's plenty of idiots there for you to choose from.

What is so important to you that you feel the need to intentionally try to goad people into arguing with you?

Considering that you take direct attempts to "shut down" arguments (I.e. calling people reddit, accusing people of being fallacious or idiots), that it's a power thing.

So what's going on, talk to me. Something specific got you feeling crappy, or is it a general sense of ennui. You might be thinking "wow look at this homo" or maybe "liberal/cuck/reddit" depending on your school of shitposting, but fuck, man, it's anonymous. You can drop the pretense and we can have some honest talk here, and in a few hours the thread will 404 and nobody will ever know, you can go right back to shitposting if you're so inclined.

So what's up?

"Cancer" is a meaningless term. What fate points are a symptom of is failed game balance. The designer goes "hmm, there are situations where due to random chance, my game will fuck up and kill someone in a situation that they really shouldn't die. How do I fix this?" The solution of "make the system not do that" is often hard to implement and would require throwing a lot out. So instead the developer decides to implement fate points, which make those cases irrelevant.

The problem is they also make death irrelevant, decreasing tension, and are only a band-aid to the initial problem, treating symptoms rather than causes.
>>
You know folks, it can sometimes be necessary to bump your own thread to make it actually live. Few people enter a thread with no posts. Op did a shitty job of it, in >>46130980, but his intent wasn't necessarily as malodorous as y'all are assuming.

>>46131844
This is a thread about the design of traditional games. It's phrased fagaliciously, but the actual merit of fate points as a design conceit is still worth discussing.
>>
>>46131885
>"Cancer" is a meaningless term.
>Describes cancer perfectly
Cancer is something that grows and the more it grows the more it kills the host. In this case, shitty lazy permissive game mechanics are the cancer and new rpgs are the host.
>>
>>46131960
>permissive
This isn't the problem. All a fate point does is make you not die. Not dying is fine, and you can survive without having concecuences. Consider Magical Burst – It's almost impossible to die by accident, and even if you want to kill your character, it's pretty tough. Because the real danger is overusing magic, and as you do that your character is slowly corrupted into a bizarre monster. Of note, that game also has a "not die" aspect, but it's one that makes sense – You can't be killed in your magical form, and when you run out of resolve (basically HP) you return to your mundane form, where anything can kill you. That's arguably permissive, if you consider death the only penalty (which is retarded, but for the sake of argument) and yet it is neither lazy nor cancerous.

tl;dr: "permissiveness" isn't the problem and games that don't kill you can still punish you.
>>
>>46131405
my players always expect me to just bail them out whenever they fuck up, i don't know why.
>>
>>46132078
>Consider Magical Burst
No I will not.
>>
>>46132239
That's retarded. Try hitting them with a game over once in a while.
>>
>>46132239
Talk to them
You need to agree on what you want.
>>
>>46132311
Nah, fuck it
>>
>>46130577
Generally speaking, I disagree. Not all games need fate/plot/action points. However, when a standard part of the genre you seek to emulate is improbably fortuitous turns of fate and plot-shield, they are appropriate.

Not every game needs to be narativist
Not every game needs to be simulationist
Not every game needs to be gameist

Personally, I prefer a player-centric balance between gameism and narativism, However, I'm a GM who likes to run games in which the PC's are the protagonists of the still unwritten story, and giving such power to the players makes my job easier. Players enjoy it, I enjoy it, but it's not for everyone.
>>
>>46132239

Then either don't bail them out so they learn or play a system/game where crushing failure is always on the table so they're less upset when it happens.

RIght? What fun could possibly be drawn from utilizing and simulating genre tropes that we've been immersed in since childhood? Everything that isn't gritty realism isn't role-play, right? A consistent cast throughout a campaign? Characters being motivated by internal character hooks rather than external plot-train? rather than bluh, so boring: give me a revolving door cast that doesn't even remember the first adventure any day.

Give me a fucking break.

Otherwise it's a way to counteract shitty luck at dice ruining your narrative.

>>46134126
I remember dramatic editing being a thing in ADVENTURE!, as well as some other games that copped it, it's a fun mechanic for the right genre.

The alternative would be that the owner takes the sandwich back and throws you out of the store leaving both of you unhappy. That's not how it should work.

"Collaborative storytelling" is probably as old as D&D. Narrativism, on the other hand, is one of the newest genres in RPGs and drastically different of a playstyle, as you're not thinking of it from the PC's perspective but from the player's.

He would've won the argument immediately if he'd posted a smug anime girl instead. Didn't you know that's how arguing on 4chan works?
>>
>>46135543
Yeah, except it's not really your choice.
You can choose to go out early and control your exit somewhat but guess what? That's called surrendering.
If you fight to the last and get killed you're leaving the scene and there's going to be hell to pay. You might leave in a bag for sure, but you might just be blind forever, or lose your sword fighting arm, or whatnot.

It does depend on the genre and the group, but FATE is actually pretty hardcore in that if you play a GRRM-style campaign going out of a scene can lead to any number of bad ends, not just -10 HP and re-roll. And guess what, you don't automatically get a new character if your guy isn't dead. The GM can be a real prick about that if the group allows it. Welcome to being a blind shitty swordsman forever.

C'mon. OP is a faggot, don't lower yourself to his level.

Although I have autism, I wouldn't consider it one of my aspects.
I don't play FATE, either.

How are reroll mechanics bad?
>>
>>46137088
It doesn't work for everything, but it's a fun experience.
Legit criticisms indeed, but most of them stem from the fact that FATE in particular doesn't scratch the tactical itch that D&D or MtG might. There's also not a lot of fun in character generation, and a bunch of other sacred cows.
It's not BAD because of that, but it is different.
A real hole in it is that FATE is relatively crunchy for such a different game, but using accelerated or something would account for a lighter taste.

At the very least, try and make your criticism clever and evidence based, fuckmorton.

John Wick, answer the question or you lose.
>>
>>46137265
This one fatefag sure is going nuts in this thread. You'd think he was really mad or something.
>>
>>46137254
It's a fair and honest question. Your reluctance to answer it implies that you're just trying to rile people up with controversial assertions.

So I'll ask again. How are reroll mechanics bad?

This thread proves how baitable Current Year + 1 /tg/ is.

Or it just proves how bad fate is that in 152 posts nobody has managed to even come close to defending it

Or it proves how good you are at reverse psychology viral marketing Fate.

A single coherent criticism has yet to emerge. The defenders slumber, as there is no threat.

Well, if literally nobody can make an argument against it, it's gotta be pretty high quality.

>>46138759
Oh yes, definitely.

Remind me again why you can't handle roleplaying without crutches though?
>>
>46138856
I'm not sure where this sentiment of "crutch" is coming from or what possible context it yields.

Starting to think this thread is Fred Hick's way of reaching out to the 4chan audience.
>>
It's a shame Fate is the only system in existence otherwise this problem could be solved by simply using another system.

Oh well, I guess there's literally nothing you can do.
>>
This is bait but I'm replying anyway.

Fate points are a necessary evil, because players are stupid. They'll build their characters ineptly, make retarded decisions, then blame the DM when their special snowflakes get killed off and the game will fall apart. Fate points at least keep them alive a little longer.
>>
>>46140220
Wouldn't it be better to teach players that dying isn't the end of the world? Fuck, my first GM had us make character trees so we'd be ready to go with a minimum of fuss if someone died.
