What kind of gear should a trooper in a high technology space opera setting be using? Other than the obvious, like laser guns and jetpacks.

Gravitational adjustment boots/field
Personal self contained breathing apparatus
Personal anti decompression generator
wrist computer for decompression calculations

just shit scuba divers have
>>

Also things that protect from all sorts of super cancer inducing cosmic death rays

So, basically a way to deal with
1.) breathing
2.) crazy pressure fluctuations
4.) crazy gravity differences
5.) cosmic cancer death rays

That's some pretty neat armor.

Any source?
>>

Power armor definitely covers all bases, it's a great catch all if you don't want to seat the details. I do think it's kind of fun to imagine each components individually though, especially in the context of an overly bureaucratized army who's main objective is keeping a budget. maybe troops are required to apply their spf 4x10^8 sunscreen every day before leaving the station even though the stuff makes you smell like a foundry and may cause hair loss. Maybe troops really hate the chaffing of their wrist computers and all have really pale/gross left forearms because they aren't allowed to take them off. maybe they have like 4 different visors which are a hassle to remember which does what but are allegedly supposed to stop eyeball cancer but nobody uses them unless a CO is around. Most soldiers are young and stupid, and most military gear gets ignored or used incorrectly at one point or another (for example I know a ton of jarheads who only ever used their M9s as a hammer for pitching tents, and who used C4 to cook their MREs). I think there's a lot of cool interactions and immersion into the life of a soldier you'd be missing out on if you just handwave it all by saying "powersuits."

Are we talking about super special snowflake forces or regular infantry?

If the latter, a weapon (that's cheap to make, durable and easy to use, RL AK pattern rifles, 40K lasguns, Starship Troopers' Morita rifles are all good examples), a sidearm (optional), a multitool (it absolutely must include a shovel), a container (backpack) containing supplies (foodstuffs and camping gear), a belt/vest with spare ammo and a couple of explosives. And stuff to deal with atmosphere (or lack of it), toxins and diseases, and other variable conditions.

>>
>>46104965
Depends on the role, If those troops are doing any kind of peace keeping or occupation, you definitely want faces visible, as concealing the face takes away a vital psychological obstacle for committing violence. People are more willing to shoot a faceless goon than a person with a face.

Spec ops of course should be faceless and spoopy and tacticool as possible to emphasize how fucked you are if they show up

Crash Foam

Adapted from safety equipment designed to protect pilots during catastrophic reentry, it's basically a canister of highly compressed, fire resistant and immobilizing polymers, which can be used to splint limbs, shore up collapsing bulkheads, immobilize belligerents, and yes, provide shock protection during collisions or other violent impacts.

The downside is you need to spray it with the counteragent to dissolve the set foam.

Space Opera. Stop being an idiot. Space Opera implies anachronism because of it's genre conventions and such.

It's about people doing heroic things, IN SPACE!. And there are robots and ray guns and space ships and stuff. And aliens.

Modular armor/coveralls to go over this space suit

A modular vaccume sealed helmet and rebreather

magnetic boots for space walks on ship exteriors/boarding actions

a plasma torch for cutting through hulls

Because spacesuits are hard. Flexible spacesuits are just about impossible. It's not like sci-fi where you slip it on like a pair of pants. It's like a miniature ship. It needs insulation, cooling, heating, water, waste removal, lights, controls, and pressurized supplies of everything. The fact that they're making them form-fitting at all is insanely impressive.

You know when it comes to a Space Opera is it ok for the military tech be a bit more spectacular and fantastic in my opinion.
I mean something like the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons The FORCE:Ground Marines had suits capaple of stopping laser beams and had chameleon camo ( just like stealth camo from Metal gear) which they could use for a damn long time and they were able to keep you safe from the hazards of a depressurized enviroment plus it can enhance the wearers strength to such a degree that you can karate chop a power armored persons head off with supersonic speed.
And the FORCE multipurpose assault rifle man high explosive pulse bolts, simple kinetic rounds,a canister grenade launcher with flechette grenades, a high energy laser that can turn a 3 meter stretch of sand into molten rock and glass and that 2 meter deep instantly and that on wide beam, a beam of high energy electrons ( short BHEE) that can punch a 14 centimeter wide hole trough half a km of rock after plowing through a building, that and many more with a guaranteed 100% accuracy at 10 km plus it auto targets the head.
Or how about the Ultranauts from Allistair Reynolds from Revelation Space who had suits that were capable of creating several energy weapons and even use weaponized anti matter to defend the wearer from harm and could transform into a man sized jet while protecting the wearer inside from the G-force of going over mach 3 or so I think and they could re enter and escape the atmosphere of a planet without the help of a shuttle and those suits only can use any type of matter as fuel for these functions.
But I think another rule in Space Operas is that the soldiers have to die in droves to make sure that the Big Bad is to be taken as a serious threat.

>>46105138
I remember a short story about almost exactly that. I don't remember the title or the author but it went like so.

The end of days has come, Satan fielded his army of demons to bring ruin to all humanity, the final battle is coming.

The humanity fielded an army of robots.

Satan is losing the battle, the generals start discussing how they will stand before God and came to the conclusion that they will stand in full parade uniform, but without any medals.

Satan is driven back to Hell, and God intervenes, He starts reviving the fallen, healing the wounded, and everyone who fought is brought to Heaven directly.

The thing is, it were the robots who fought. So it is they who are brought to Heaven, and not the generals. The generals are left to die on the scorched devastated Earth.

Flight is overrated. Unless you're a professional, you're going to put yourself in a very bad situation: unless you move constantly and semi-irregularly, you're an easy target (especially for automated weapon systems), and you've got a recipe for losing a lot of men, not to mention the fact that you need to train soldiers to operate from an unfamiliar perspective and overcome natural fears, like falling to their death.

The most important piece of gear is a comprehensive suite of augmentations that allow soldiers increased damage resistance, environmental adaptability, and reaction times. Everything else can be role dependent.

>What kind of gear

Wow, welcome to Overthink: The Thread.

Future soldiers will have exactly the same kind of gear soldiers have always had - The best weapons and armour that can be had on the cheap.

... and hilarious examples of working stiffs adapting "one size fits all" theories to work in the real world, of grunts carefully modifying supplies bought by bureaucrats from the lowest bidder - so they don't actively kill the user on first use, and a thriving Yank & Jerries black market trade in cigs, Gummy Bears, gaff tape and 2-part epoxy.
