The serious answer is that it has little to do with elves themselves and more to do with the kind of players who play elves. Vampires are stronger, faster, tougher and more skillful in any given task than its living counterparts. They have multiple metamorphosises, abilities to manipulate/drain/possess other creatures and get even stronger with it, natural bluff and diplomacy skills that come with being turned, the possibility of creating an army with its mind-affecting powers and a strong affinity to magic. On top of all that, they're immortal in almost every situation(unless a 10-step guide on "how to kill a vampire", which includes overpowering the damn thing, is strictly followed). It's the epitome of undead creatures and can grow in scope almost indefinitely, not unlike liches.
Now try to compare that being with other races. Without effective level modifiers. I do like Shadowrun elves, though - at least in 4e, they're pretty much the mechanically superior option unless you're going for very specific builds (e.g. troll for STR builds; human if you want to be an Edgelord; roleplay).
I don't think I've ever played an elf in DnD3.x; the stat bonuses aren't worth dropping the bonus feat from being human, and I've never had a compelling reason to play an elf in any of the settings.

My distaste for elves was due to them being used as a shitty one-sided soapbox for bad fantasy writers. I especially hated that human characters would never call them out (but the dwarf sometimes did and I started to like them just for this). Also, how vampires were wanked nowadays is how elves were wanked back in the day (see Drowtales) and this was also annoying. Now people who got mad at the above grew up and made elves assholes, arrogant, and / or racist which reinforces these feelings of distaste.

In some interpretations they're an entire race of too perfect for you mary sues, and in others they're a race of arrogant bastards one tentacle away from being Elder Things.

Depends on how deserved that arrogance is. If, for example, the elves are or were the not!Romans of the setting who currently rule or ruled most of the known world, then their arrogance is more than deserved. After all, their culture is the basis of all civilization.
If they're just a bunch of people living somewhere far away who look down on non-elves because reasons, then it's bullshit.

It can be - they won't recognize the severity of a threat until it's too late. So where they could have once smacked the BBEG around, now they have to get the party to grab a bunch of macguffins.
At least humanity can be forgiven for not recognizing a threat because of ignorance or blindness, not an overly strong belief in their own superiority.

No, really. You gotta be able to meet elves on your own terms, otherwise you're not going to find anything to like about them. It helps you get over this hipsterish sense of 'everyone else is ruining elves for me.' If no one else is helping you earn the respect of elves, you gotta do it for yourself.

Play them however you'd like. Just the character being an elf is enough.
If being able to fall fully into the stereotype of an elf helps you - if you can find any enjoyment in it - that'd be a good place to start. If you wanted to just play them like humans but with pointy ears, that's good too. Then you can learn to like elves just through the specifics of your character. But if you wanted to go totally against the mold, make a barbarian elf and try to play him like he was an orc or something, that would work too.
If none of those seem interesting to you, try to base your character around a specific theme that relies on race in general - maybe they're a freed slave, or a wandering gypsy - and though you could use just about any race for that, chose elves. Or try half-elves as a sort of 'babies first elf.' That's what I did when I first started moving beyond humans as characters.

It's one of the most interesting things about the setting, really. The fact that this whole universe has happened before, hundreds of times, and many of the more esoteric and strange things are things brought over from the last timeline, or just things that have survived across all of them in some form. And the fact that this kalpa - timeline - is in some ways the craziest, and almost definitely is the very last one. When it ends, everything ends.

DF has a morals system for each race. Elves see cannibalism as a personal matter, killing sentient life as justifiable, even killing wildlife is accepted and considered normal. But touch a tree and they go apeshit about the "value of nature".
