What type of music do the denizens of 40k listen to? Hymns obviously, but is all other music illegal or do they have other stuff too?
Also post 40k music.

What the people of the fortyfirst millenium consider hymns, would probably be experimental vaporwave hardcore grind-rap by our today standards.

You know how /tg/ always gives that non answer, 'It depends on the setting?'
When it comes to 40k, that answer is 'It depends on the Planet'
You can literally encounter anything and everything in the IoM, depending where you go, from historically accurate or anachronistic fuedal worlds to fagballs Steampunk mechanicus style to scifi baroque

When we were playing Rogue Trader our parties RT had a bar/lounge installed as an officers club.
He insisted it have a jazz singer.
No idea if its lore friendly or not but it became a hang out place for us onboard.

Do you simply not read Black Library stuff? Because they spell it out fairly plainly in there. They ahve what's colloquially called 'pound', which is from context likely to be the most niggish of drum heavy dance music, they mention folk, classical and choral equivalents and they obviously have thigns like electric guitars as the original Noise Marine weaponry is based on whatever instruments kind of match that.

Oh sweet Empy, that's fantastic.

This probably fits even better.

Not really. My /lit/ brain starts complaining if I do.

Oh. Yeah fair enough, a couple are OK but I wouldn't in all honesty recommend them unless you want background info.
But yeah. Dance, classical, folk and orchestral along with plainsong are confirmed, rock and punk are fairly heavily implied.

That being said, if you want to get a look at what music is like for high society, for the Terran elite and those poseurs trying to be them like Rogue Traders, you're likely looking at a form of Baroque music, which was a movement during the 1600's-1700's, a period of time during the late HRE that is one of the things the IoM is loosely based on.

Notable composers during this era you've probably heard of include VIVALDI and BACH

I love the background fluff, but I mainly get that from the video games/codices than the books. It pleases me that they still have classical though.
I hope there's a hive somewhere where it's all reversed, the nobles all listening to dance and rock, and the oppressed factory workers enjoy classical.

Pretty much everything that isn't explicit heresy is called a hymn by someone. The Ecclesiarcy is fairly loose when it comes to standardization.
80s speed/thrash metal as it was originally intended.

Yes. The art should be a good indication.
How come nobody has mentioned gospel rock yet? With the vibe 40k gives off, I think that's rather fitting. Maybe even elevate it to gospel metal.
