Hello /tg,
So, I am in the process of creating a very powerful lich for my current campaign.
The catch? He isn't evil. Well, not exactly.

The lich( Who will be named Heri,) Has immense power, but constantly flubs his spells and plans. Though he is a lich, a neigh undying beacon of undead magical power, he has a... less that secure grasp on the actual ancedotes of magic and spellcasting. as well, he usually acts in a very sociable and fun, yet absentminded manner. (Picture if Goofy stole Mickey's hat and ascended to lich hood)

As one could imagine, this gets him into a fair amount of trouble on a regular basis. Including, but not limited to: losing his still-conscious head, Putting a 600lb Stone golem to guard his elven porn stash, and awakening his fortress to move to a new city. (which leads to the fortress plunging into a mid life crisis.)

Anyone have ideas for wizardly Shinanigans for Heri to put our players through?
>>
He challenges them to a race
Enters a triathlon but gets disqualified for using the gun against the other participants
>>
sounds kawaii dude

he goes to create a plague that kills things then reanimates their skeleton to infect more things

it only works on dogs and the skeleton dogs only attack other dogs. the skeleton dogs are adorable as fuck when interacting with people

Too bad liches need souls to keep himself alive and even if he isn't evil, sucking souls to sustain your immortality would give a pretty bad impression.
>>
>>45951226
Depends on the setting
and the dm really
>>
>>45951244
Well what the DM says goes, but just saying in the lore of liches normally they are sustained on souls, and if they don't they become a Demi lich
>>
>>45951313
and that's fine to point out, but I doubt this dm is going to go with it
but I did not know that and find it interesting, so thank you anon

Generally when trying to get any inspiration like this, just try and think "logically." Okay so you've established that he's a Lich but incompetent at magic and also not evil. If that's the case, then how did he become a Lich? What does he do to sustain himself if he doesn't consume souls? Why is he interested in staying a Lich? Why hasn't he used his powers for good instead of fucking around? Answer these questions and not only should quests come naturally (since you can figure out Heri's motivations) but you also end up with a much more fleshed out (pardon the pun) character that will be more memorable than just a blatant attempt to reverse tropes.

In your campaign maybe

There are plenty of liches around who got rez'd by other people, and have magic that they can't control keeping them alive

Yes, I have a basic background written out regarding as to "how" he ascended. Heri was, in life, a man who was at the beck and call of those around him. Never had a decision for himself. In his middle years he took a job as an abusive wizard's apprentice, found some old tomes on lichdom, and took his chance.

Heri is, in essence, a man who never had the power to make things happen for himself. Now, as a lich, he has all the power he could ever need.

and he has NO idea what to do with it.
(Imagine if a child suddenly received a large inheritance.)

As a result, he spends his days trying to make sense of his former master's various spellbooks and ritualistic tomes(It was a miracle he had the capacity to understand the steps of Lichdom at all.)

When he's feeling lucky, he attempts a ritual he thinks would be 'useful' or 'cool'. When he does succeed on the main front, it usually has some weird, adverse affect.

By far, I'd say the biggest hurdle he needs to jump is, as you say, his need for sustenance.
I'm leaning towards his former master having either
A: A gate to either the Infernal or Abyssal realm. (Through which monsters and demons conveniently enter.)
B: A monster/ evil human with a curse placed on it to continually replicate self aware, fully independent copies of itself.
C: Some strange mixture of the two, such as a plain that continually spews forth monsters.
(similar to this:

Your comment was very helpful, and I hope you will reply again, should the need arise.

>600lb Stone golem to guard his elven porn stash
>elven porn stash
Does he even have the, er, equipment to utilise that any more?

At this point, it's more of a sentimental thing.

Going to have a zombie outbreak now, but only for dogs.

Semi-related question: a player finds a really, really nice magic weapon early in the game. Like a +3 one before level 5. But shortly after finding it, he keeps meeting this... corpse that not only demands the magic weapon be given to it, but that the PC pay a fee for having "borrowed" it. And he can smash the shit out of the corpse, but every time, it eventually comes back, and the fee it demands as compensation gets more dire.

How long until the player realizes that the best piece of loot he's ever found is a lich's phylactery? How long until the player *accepts* this fact?

"Hey asshole, that crypt you 'found' that sword in was mine. The sword's mine too. Hand it over, plus some quid so I can take a carriage home."
>Smite
"Me again, asshole. Give me the sword and, you know what? For all the trouble you've put me through, you can give me one of your fingers, too."
>Smite
"You're a slow learner, asshole. This could be over and done with, if you just give me the sword and your first-born."

I do believe that's only the lore in AD&D.
And they don't use souls they use soul larvae.

The main reason lichs tended to advance other people's
agendas was to buy soul larva off of demons or devils.

I should also set how exactly Heri's been found.

Well, remember how he managed to behead himself? well, his head was found by a temple priest, who, only seeing it was undead, blessed it and buried it at a crossroads. Our adventurers, walking on the same crossroads, pass a listen check and hear Henri's cries of irritation at being buried. once unearthed, he promises riches to be returned to his body.

As the heroes chase his travelling fortress, they come across various results of many failed spells of Heri.

looking for random encounters, dungeons and others , having Heri on one's shoulder saying things along the lines of "Huh... so THAT'S where that ended up..." and giving out not-that-helpful advice, such as "POUR YOUR OIL ON THAT FIRE ELEMENTAL! That hurts them, right?"

Sooo, yeah. that's about as far as we are...

Ideas still welcome!

Make it so that some of his gold stashes are coin bugs. They look exactly like gold pieces, but they eventually sprout insect legs and walk back to where the players took them from.

So, when they pay for a really expensive item, they're going to have a really angry shopkeeper who told them that the money they gave him walked away.
>>
>>45954998
Oh yeah, and he did this because he's an absent minded lich and kept losing track of his gold, so he added an enchantment so that he'd always know where his gold pieces were.

An animate dragon skeleton, with fractures and loose stitches hanging off of the various joints, one of its pelvic bones or leg bones looking more more busted and fractured than the rest. Not really as a mechanic of the fight, but more cosmetic.

>"So here's a funny story. This one time a dragon of all things comes to my castle with a bum leg, asks me to fix it because I guess most necromancers are supposed to be good with anatomy. Didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't my strong suit. plus how could I turn down half a dragons hoard? I managed to refurbish my entrance hall with all that."

>"So I'm removing the bone when all of a sudden it snaps, catches on the hip. One thing lead to another and...well...I'm just glad black dragon's don't have strong familial ties. I am many things adventurers...powerful, wise, handsome. but a surgeon adventures...a surgeon is not one of these things."

A town inhabited entirely by horrifically mishapen undead who don't act just like regular people. Ol' Heri came across a town completely dead from plague and thought why waste all these perfectly good test subjects when he's trying to understand resurrection magics. Things didn't quite work as intended.

Whoops
*Who do act

bumpy

>>45951313
Hmph, in my experience a demilich is a lich ascended to demiurge/godhood.
>>
>>45954576
At that point I'd be looking for ways to turn the lich's body into a piece of armor. I can save on repair costs since it regenerates as long as I have the sword.
>>
So your making lich version of hedonism bot

Essentially.
