/tg/, do you have a That Die? That one die that exists to sabotage your games, and screw you at every turn?

I'm quickly beginning to realize that my 'favorite' d20 (Chessex, translucent orange with white swirled in, black numbers) is a conniving piece of shit. I just tested it on a variety of 'skill checks', and this fucker failed every single one. Should I shame it? Shatter it? Melt it down? Roll it under the LGS vending machine, never to be played again?

>>45693517
No matter how many times a die rolls badly, I never swap it out for another.
Ever.
Never ever.
>>
>>45693517
Dice in the hands of one player may be different in the hands of the next. Don't trash it just because it didn't respond to you, Harry. Gift it to someone who can use it.
>>
>>45693601
One set of my d6's was like that. Hated me, loved my now ex-GF.
>>
>>45693517
My dice tend to start rolling low when I don't use them for a long time. That's why I try to use them all evenly.

I feel like that is just asking for trouble.

Kill it with fire. It's the only way to be sure.

I have one d20 that's very...dramatic is the best way to put it I guess. It always seems to make whatever roll will cause the most drama, good or bad.

First time I noticed this was during a a Paragon 4e game, where I entered combat with someone I swore a blood oath to destroy(because he killed the only PC in the group mine could bro around with). Rolled six nat 20s in a row on that fucker and basically pasted him.

Same character later would, against a rival villain, fail to hit him at a crucial time with the same d20, which eventually led to my character losing his sword arm(and getting a robotic replacement), then during my final match with the villain, rolled another string of crits to pulverize him.

More recently, during a game playtesting my DM's homebrew system, a bad roll caused my character to put the wrong set of genitalia on(PC was a robot trying to build himself a giant dick and grabbed the wrong instruction manual), then a nat 20 on a craft roll let me attach a robot centipede to my back like doc ock arms.

I keep it around to make things interesting.
>>
I used to have a d20 which seemed to perform about as average as you'd expect.

Then I took over DMing and used the same set of coloured dice.

Suddenly this d20 started critting the shit out of players. I started rolling it outside my screen in most circumstances. In some instances I would accept pleas to use another persons die.
Being it was the same group I'd been playing with, they all knew nothing funny was up with the die. They'd seen me roll it a thousand times with no real weighting either way. But as soon as it was rolling for monster attacks it started pounding the shit out of people.

I think I had an evil d20
>>
No, but I spent like fifteen bucks on a huge d20 only to find out later it was really a MTG life counter.
>>
I have a d20 that's as RIGHTEOUS as it gets. It's a little metal copper-colored die. When I use it for fiend-smiting, evil-undoing, and righteous deeds, it always rolls high, and rarely higher then 12 when it's used for evil. I never played full-blown paladin, but yesterday I did.

I swear to god I have never rolled so many 20s in a single game.
>>
>>45693517
Listen mate, if you have shitty dice, then it's your fault.

You have to train your dice better if you want good results.

Enlighten me. How does one 'train' a die? Because from what I've seen and heard over the years, dice tend to have personalities of their own.
>>
>>45694443
Your seemingly regular set simply turned out to be a GM's High Set.

All GMs should have three sets. The High Set is when you want to succeed against your players, the Low Set is when you want to fail against your players, and the Neutral Set is used to leave it to random chance.

Utilizing all three sets of dice effectively as you're crafting your narrative is what makes a great GM.
>>
>>45694976
Sure, dice have default personalities that determine how they roll as soon as you acquire them, but personalities can change over time with new experience, and training is a part of that.

You need to spend time with your dice, comfort it, let it know you trust it. You have to use it for enough rolls that it feels included, but not so many that it gets tired out. The kind of roll you use it on varies too. Maybe the dice in question is just not good at Skill Checks? Figure out its strengths and weaknesses, and adjust your dice usage to that.

I have a d20 that I used in place of a mini on a battle map that came with a 4e module. The paladin did his divine challenge on the monster it was representing, named Iron Tooth. One clusterfuck later, Iron Tooth died, and I held on to it. Later in the game, I misplaced the d20 I was using, so I grabbed the d20 I used for Iron Tooth and rolled it against the paladin. It wasn't a nat 20, but it was up there, enough to hit him. And it was consistent too. Against everyone else, it rolled kinda mediocre (usually close to 10, never higher than 15), but against the paladin it was constantly hitting 17-20.

So I kept it on hand whenever the paladin was getting uppity, which was a lot of the time, the player kinda sucked at being a paladin.

>three sets of dice

I have NEVER heard of that. I'm not well experienced, so I'm kind of intrigued.
>>
>>45693592
You should however, closely inspect it.

Source: had a die that was visibly lopsided when put up against a bright background, causing it to roll really shittily.

Eh, all water under the bridge now. I still look fondly back on her, and those times, but I've come to accept that there was nothing else that could be done at the time.

That said, I still have that set of dice (right next to my preferred Chessex set), which I use with friends when demo-ing games.

Welcome to /tg/ Mr Fantastic, I hope you enjoy your stay.

Most of my die are fine, but I've got one orange and blue speckled d20 that I don't like. The thing looks gross, rolls low, and I keep it separate from all my other die. Haven't even tried to roll it in about five years, but I'd never trash the poor thing, just condemn it to a life of isolation.
>>
I have a superstition that I have to use appropriately colored dice (I buy the bulk pound sized bags from Chessex) for certain rolls.

A good way around this is that I have a number of dice that I can use for anything or for specific characters. I have a set of blue aurora dice from Chessex that are magnificent for me, and my Raptor Librarian managed to get 10's on damage from his green-with-gold-lettering dice that I use, smiting a poor tyrranid for 90 damage in a single hit.

My first set of dice, however, were ultramarine color (I never played 40k, I just needed dice and I have a thing for gold lettering), and I lost the d6 from the set (rather, lent it for use with a board game and never got it back, because this is what happens when you're a high school student and parents want to play Trivial Pursuit).

On the few occasions I've used that set since losing the d6, it's been out to kill me. I'm hoping that some day I will find the d6 and return it to its rightful place, and see if my luck with those dice improves.
>>
I remember there were threads where people would share they die. Haven't seen one in a while, so let me ask here: how did you even choose what die to buy? How much did it cost you?
>>
>>45702123
I've never purchased an individual die (all of my individual dies are adopted, having been found behind shelves and covered in dust at my LGS.

I have two sets of Chessex dice that I don't use particularly often. One tends to roll above average (4+), while the other set tends to roll below average EXCEPT when rolling a large number of dice. In such cases, it'll roll predominately one number (i.e. >50% in 3's), with a few others scattered in.

>All these damn superstitious motherfuckers.

The only dice I have problems with are d12s and d30s. They roll just fine: it's getting them to stop that's the problem.
>>
I have those dice, which I use for myself when demoing game with beginners, since they tend to roll slightly poorly then usual. On the flip side I have the GW chaos star dice that almost always roll super well.
>>
>>45693517
i have a this die... it always rolls good. last game i cvrtitted 3 times with my simple longsword and generally he never rolls beneath 12. only one i use.
