XCOM Lives, Commander.

By popular demand, /tg/'s /xcomg/ returns, with anther shitty survey for everyone to mock me for.

>Best XCOM game? Why?
>Worst XCOM game? Why?
>What's your best XCOM story?
>How much do you hate Thin Men/Vipers?
>>
How do you distinguish between earnest discussion initiated by an enthusiastic Anon and marketing awarness increasing campaign by corporate new media department?

I'm not saying you necessarily have to be the latter, but it's an interesting question I believe.
>>
I wish we got more of a look at what human life is like now that ADVENT is in charge. We have the newscasts and the new colonies and the gene therapy and constantly being watched, but do humans have any contact with aliens who are not just soldiers patrolling? Are the humans being forced to learn the alien language? Are there alien cults outside of the personality cult of the Elders promoted on TV?
>>
>>45376527
The only difference between shilling and generally wanting to discuss a game is that the former already knows the answers.
>>
>>45376542
>Are the humans being forced to learn the alien language?
That's definitely a no. Shen makes a note in XCOM 2 about how they've never managed to figure out the alien language. Otherwise, no idea.

>>45376527
I'm bored at work and wanted to chat about XCOM because it's a great series and /v/ is completely fucking useless.
>>
>>45376542
It's just like America, but with IRL Scalies.

When I'm skulking around in the missions you have concealment, they'll often stop and talk with civilians. They can spend several turns with them.

But I'm going to agree with Tygan that it is still scary.
>>
>>45376475
My current laptop is just under the minimum specs for graphics, so i'm just playing long war until I finish my new PC.
That said, suck on a rocket thin men.
>>
>>45376576
If they can't figure out the alien language, why is it written in the television broadcasts?

Even Snek?
>>
>>45376577
Seriously? I've never seen the aliens talking with other humans. Granted, I usually don't stick around in concealment for long, but the humans just seem to mind their own business and get out of the way once the fighting starts.

>>45377714
There's some sort of mysterious entity that targeted the Ethereals because of their psychic potential and chased them off their planet. The Ethereals want to fight the entity, but leaving their planet has caused their bodies to gradually decay and they're slowly dying in spite of their prior immortality.

The Ethereal Elders have been traversing the galaxy for about one thousand years, dominating alien species in hopes of building up an army that they can turn around and fight the Cosmic Horror with, but they're also trying to find a species that is genetically compatible enough with them that they can save their dying race. Whenever an Ethereal overextends itself psychically their body collapses and leaves them as a psychic ghost, which dies shortly after. The Ethereals are occupying earth because humans have the right DNA sequence that their body can be melted down into DNA goo and processed into new bodies for the Ethereals.

I do plenty of gene research and while it was a little soft, it wasn't so bad.

Basically, the ethereals needed to create a body that was simultaneously:
- Similar enough to the ethereals to allow an ethereal's psychic presence to continue sustaining itself after it takes up residence
- Physically robust enough to not fucking wither and explode under the prolonged strain of hosting an ethereal psychic presence
- Dissimilar enough from the ethereals genetically to not suffer from the wasting disease.

The end result of this selection process was that they needed a species which natively had psychic potential because while they could make shit psychic by putting all their psyker genes in it, that just gave it the wasting disease. It also needed to be physically and mentally robust, ruling out the sectoids, who were frail and feeble minded despite their psychic powers, and even with, or indeed BECAUSE of their human DNA powered enhancements still somewhat unstable.

The avatar project was to use millions of redundant human gene sequences to create a robust scaffold that absolutely wouldn't say, stop producing haemoglobin under intense psychic strain, and then put just the tiniest amount of ethereal DNA in to make the ole spaceghosts feel at home.

now i havent played DA, but i dont even remotely See mass effect getting so called "waifu syndrome". sure, new romance options were opened up, but thats the nature of a game series that suddenly got more popular in general, the alien romance options were jsut there for the reason of extra game content.
>>45380045
that might have been because bioware games were some of the only mainstream RPG's with reasonable well done *(for the most part) romance options (i dont really consider the fallout games as being well known for this). and ive seen the trailers and promo material for the DA games, and the extra "waifus and husbandos" are just features, not the main attractions. also the playing up of the "romance options of all sexes and races" is probably bioware doign that thing they like to do, you know, the progressive agenda thing.

perhaps you see it this way because thats the way this site tends to talk about such things, but cmon anon...

Best XCOM game is XCOM 2, mainly because of my hype and the potential it has moving forward.
Worst XCOM game is 2, mainly because of the hype around it and the current state it's in.
My best XCOM story is how a lone colonel heavy got stuck in midair on a Facility Raid mission in XCOM 2, and managed to kill 2 reinforcement waves all on her own before I had to restart the entire mission.
Thin Men aren't too bad in my opinion, Vipers are only annoying when they use their tongues to pull you onto higher or lower floors, otherwise they're rather squishy.

Thin men are definitely worse, because enemies in 2 don't get a close range aim bonus, vipers like to tongue and poison if they can, and don't come in packs of 23.

It's actually GOOD if a viper binds you, because that soldier isn't gonna get shot this turn, with a free flank shot if you free him with say a grenade or shock.

> Suddenly, sniper camping at the entrance side of the building spots something `!´
> Overwatch shot! A snek is grazed!
> A pod of two sectoids and a snek on the roof, behind the giant window. They activate.
> Suddenly, breaking glass as the sectoids rush in.
> Long slo-mo cinematic of falling glass, jumping sectoids and bullet trails as everyone fires at them.
