How will this affect Wizards of the Coast?

It won't, at all, and I don't see how you would think it would.

>wotc isn't reaching sales goals
>new management doesn't like it

Didn't wiz had a horrible quarter last year?
>>
1. It's just a rumor. Nothing is confirmed. Hasbro and Mattel have talked about merging on and off for decades.
2. The only thing this would really do is let them save on redundant operations and cross-promote IP, but there's not much cross promotion to really do except make a GI Joe that fits in Barbie's car.
3. WotC is such a minuscule part of Hasbro's overall business that the only thing that -might- happen to it is that it gets lost in the shuffle and sold off.

Pretty much what these guys said. Hasbro doesn't give a shit about WotC so long as they keep printing out cardboard crack. D&D? What's that? Might as well not even exist. WotC's corporate overlords will continue to not give a fuck as long as M:tG keeps selling.

I'm sure last year's Q4 was financially bad, I can't find the article though.

They're a mass media company now. They own Huffington Post, TechCrunch, and Engadget.

That said, as of last year more than 2 million people still have AOL dialup. Which is fucking bananas.

5e has actually gotten some positive attention from Hasbro since it came out, but obviously nothing gamechanging.

Basically they're doing well enough and perceived well enough to keep mostly doing their own thing.

Like I said, a little thing, but still good attention.
>>
>>45262780
It probably won't affect Wizards much, if at all.

Still wondering how long it will take for Disney to try to buy out one of the two (probably Hasbro, given the existing and very lucrative Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Princess toy licensing contracts), given how acquisition-happy they've been in the past decade.
>>
>>45267735
They'd own the D&D, M:tG, and the G.I. Joe and Transformers toylines, so on top of Marvel and LucasFilm/LucasArts they would own a truly monumental chunk of nostalgia and warm feelings. That'd be a hell of a purchase, but it would also be quite expensive in more ways than one. Doing something like this without a plan in mind is liable to waste time and effort AND depreciate the value of what you just bought for excessive cash and stock options.

I'm still waiting for Hasbro to make a Magic cartoon in the vein of MLP
Planeswalkers made for the show from each color have adventures and learn the importance of team work.

Planeswalker Barbie.

Hotwheels: Forgotten Realms racetrack.

For some it's literally the only option. For others, changing would be paying more money for something they really don't use except for very specific purposes.

I don't understand how the fuck Trouble, Life, or Candy Land can be up.

Aren't these games that everyone's grandmother has in a closet somewhere that haven't been played in decades due to being too boring even for small children?

I guess I get that some are sold, because we need to stock the unused closet space of new grandmothers, but how the fuck are sales UP on games like this?
>>
>>45274304
Don't forget the monopol on fiction. While you're working yourself to death so you can remember when things were not shit, your kids are watching the newest film about how great it is to be an obidient citizen and everyone quotes two lines from the hit song "report dissenters".
>>
>>45263821
Then how do you explain the baning of Zach jesse

Hasbro does keep an eye on and involves itself in wizards business.
>>

To be fair I think anon was talking more about movie nostalgia nobody gives a fuck about the old pony stuff.

I might go check out how /mlp/ is reacting to this.

Not at all. Mattel >>45263821 lacks the ability to truly PUSH things rather than just riding the wave of whatever is currently coming their way. Call me when Saban is interested. He's a fuckup, but it seems to work for him.

No it's not. It's reddit-tier quirky darkshit

If that sort of tech was invented it would either be illegalized before the chips became widespread or there would be some Bond villain guy mind-controlling the whole world

MLP is basically a sitcom with occasional adventure episodes, a Magic cartoon would have to invert that and probably come up with a plausible reoccurring enemy (Bolas and/or Obby Nobby would work).

In terms of sitcoms, Jace can be the high-INT socially inept nerd, and Gideon can be the kinda dumb but kind and wise friend. Chandra is... well, she's kind of already a sitcom personality, to be honest. She'd fit right in. I don't really know how Nissa would work in a sitcom, though. "Bitch with a heart of gold"? "The boring one"? I feel like just making those four the protagonists is either one too many or a little too few for an ensemble cast.
>>
>>45279318
Nissa is Starfire from the Teen Titans cartoon
>>
>>45279318
So you are saying she's a background card/character
>>
>>45275124
Assuming I don't get chipped first, that sort of future is one I'd definitely ditch living in proper civilization to avoid.

Time to live in shanty towns like a bunch of fuckers in XCOM2 do.
>>
I hope they go through with the merger and eventually sell the D&D license to somebody who gives more of a fuck.

I honestly think that's a multi-billion dollar franchise if you play your cards right.
>>
>>45279538
Problem with D&D is it's a very "one and done" type of product, where you just need to buy 1, maybe 2 books and you're basically all set to play and never have to buy another thing for it.

Yeah they have splat books, but those get less and less sales as time goes on.

Which is kind of a pain when it was expected to be making the same constant sales that a constantly evolving have like Magic was.
>>
>>45279931
It seems that their new model is to make a lot of adventure books (And outsource a lot of them to save costs), which would ideally see one sale per group.
The problem with this model is that once a DM is done with the premade, they probably sell it on to someone else, which means there will be a large secondary market that will undercut their model very badly.
>>
>>45279335
I feel it.
>FADE IN, INT: JACE's house. GIDEON is practicing with his sural, shirt off and sweaty. SFX: Girls 'ooh'ing.
>JACE bursts in
>JACE: Gideon! Hey, can I ask you something?
>GIDEON (panting, putting down his weapon): Sure thing, bro, what's up?
>JACE goes over to a table and spreads a piece of paper.
>JACE: I've just gotten a critical piece of evidence...
>GIDEON puts his hand on JACE's shoulder, indicating he should get to the point. JACE gulps. SFX: Girls 'ooh'ing, lower this time.
>JACE: Well, it's just I've figured out... (he points out some lines. GIDEON tilts his head) ... that tomorrow is Ral's birthday, and I thought I ought to get him something.
>GIDEON: Oh, that Izzet guy? Well, you're both smart. Maybe you should just get him something that you'd want?
>JACE (thinking): Oh, good idea! Something useful, like... (realization) Oh! A slide rule! Perfect!
>SFX: laugh track
>GIDEON(uneasy): Well, he probably already...
>JACE: Thanks, Gideon! I'll go get one right now! (He exits.)
>GIDEON: Hoo boy.
>SFX: laugh track. SCENE

>INT: another room. CHANDRA and NISSA are sitting on a couch. CHANDRA is sitting with her feet up on a table. NISSA is sitting on the other side of the couch, her hands folded in her lap.
>CHANDRA: Whoa! Hey, aren't you watchin' this? These Rakdos guys look like real party animals.
>NISSA: It all looks rather undignified.
>CHANDRA: Pssh, how can you say that. Everybody's partied hard once or twice in their lives, right? (leaning back) Man, I remember this one time at Keral when I was hanging out with the acolytes.... Wait. Don't tell me, you've NEVER cut loose like that?
>NISSA (uncomfortable): Growing up, the Joraga didn't like things like... music and all that...
>CHANDRA sits up
>CHANDRA: WHAT.
>SFX: laugh track
>CHANDRA: Ok, listen. You and me, we're going out. Tonight. No, right now. Let's go!
