OP this is because of a fundamental issue with females. They do not partake in RPGs for the same reason you do. They are not there to enjoy getting lost in mystical worlds of imagination. They are there to inflate their egos. This is why all women do things, and it applies to D&D as well.
The sooner you understand this, the happier you will be. I am guessing you are very young and don't have much experience with women, but I guarantee you that in my fifteen years of RPG experience, every single fucking time a woman showed up to the game, it went down hill from there. Personally i think less women can play RPGs properly compared to men. It's not a matter of intelligence or anything but motivation. Most of the women who play RPGs are not there for the roleplaying, they are there because their partners are there or they are doing it to get attention.
Roleplaying has so many stereotypes associated with it that most women won't touch with it a ten foot pole because it's death in their social circles, unless they pull the "well my BF spends every friday night there so I decided to go see what it was like" card.
You know how in high school you had those jocks that would pick on anyone they thought was a nerd? Most women judge each other really heavily and the bitchiness can get out of hand.

My play group consists of me (dude), three guys, and two girls. It has been my experience that women operate on another level where insecurities are concerned.

Well, members of the female gender literally CANNOT stop judging each other. If two women meet even in a friendly scenario, they immediately size each other up and start being alert and somewhat defensive. I've talked to women about this; had an especially fascinating conversation with my female cousin about this subject.
Friendship between women is far from impossible, though. Joking aside i'm oddly reminded of a TV show I watched many years ago about a youth offender's prison. When the guyards were interviewed about which they thought was worse, boys or girls they all answered girls.
The boys just tends to straight up start fist fights and that was easy to deal with but the girls were vicious. They would exclude their victim and relentlessly attack them emotionally (and often physically) at every turn - suicide was a serious issue for these girls often under 20.
