Since there isn't any agreed upon point at which someone goes from being a casual gamer/disinterested to being a full gamer or a true gamer or whatever the term you use is, it seems like a very subjective determination that each group would make based on their own experience.
Gaming isn't something like STEM, or a job, there isn't any real accreditation besides actually spending time playing games. If someone plays games for enjoyment of some kind they are a gamer, if someone doesn't play games, or just spends their time talking about games but not participating, they are not a gamer. Being socially outcast doesn't make a person a gamer, and is not a necessary component of enjoying games, though it does tend to lead people towards traditional games, vidya, ect. So I play Magic fairly competitively, and in that environment you see people from all walks of life. When you play at a Grand Prix or RPTQ, you're playing against people who are serious and love the game and are generally pretty cool. When you play at FNM you can play against literally any kind of person, including turbonerds and parents and kids.
I don't care who I'm playing with or against. I'm there to play a game and have fun, and winning is fun to me. If I lose, then I'm less likely to have fun, but I accept that losing comes with playing games. If we can talk during or after the game and they're cool, that's even better. Being a normie really doesn't matter.
If I'm playing D&D, all I want is people who aren't "lol so random" or people just playing angry birds and not focusing. Everyone brings something different to the table. This. I'm 25 and based on my memory of 4chan user stats the majority of people posting here should be within a few years of me, slanted to the younger side if anything. I think the transformation of nerd hobbies from outcast-tier to accepted began or at least reached mainstream around the time I was in HS/college, probably assisted by the popularity of video games like WoW. I was considered weird in middle school and high school for being into MTG and DnD and I remember feeling embarrassed and hiding it for the most part (I would even stuff all my cards into drawers at home because I didn't like my parents/siblings to find them laying around). But I was never seriously bullied by peers or shamed by adults, for which I feel grateful. My DnD group in college included some long-time nerds in addition to people who were new to the hobby (including girls). By that time I was also over feeling like normal people were out to get me and it turned out to be a great group.
I feel bad for people who had to endure actual persecution for being into nerd hobbies (something that seems downright silly today), but things are better now than they've ever been. I think perhaps the reason a lot of people in the gaming community feel uneasy or upset about the normalization of games is that the former outcast status made it a sort of haven for social misfits. The sense of community among people who all felt isolated from other people made it meaningful in a sense above and beyond the actual gaming part. So it is a bit sad that that world is disappearing, but I think it's just the circle of life that one subculture gets replaced by another.
