What do you guys think of Zone Mortalis games? Making a gameboard for it seems fun.
>>
Where are the rules for Zone Mortalis? Is it in a certain HH book?

What is the average point value and what limitations are there?

HH book 1 and 3 have Zone Mortalis stuff. Book 1 has the base rules, 3 has a major expansion to the available options.

As for restrictions:
2' x 2' for up to 500 points per side.
4' x 4' for up to 1000 points per side.

> No dedicated transports (I think book 3 changes a few things here).
> No units larger than 15 models (before adding independent characters)
> No Vehicles other than Walkers, unless it's less than 4" wide. No flyers period.
> No monstrous creatures with bases larger than 60mm.
No Warlord Traits under 501 points.

I love AL but I just can't find a non-airbrush way to paint them satisfactorily. I ended up going with another Legion because of it.

Has the Spartan made the Land Raider Phobos functionally obsolete?

Only 18% more expensive (~13.5% if you count included Extra Armour) for 25% more HP, 150% more capacity, 100% more lascannon shots and access to Flare Shield.

The only advantage is being able to be squadroned, but having to stay within 4" severely limits tactical possibilites for the units inside and you're probably better off using Armoured Spearhead if you want LR spam.

Drakenhoff Nightshade wash

by luna wolves, you mean white, correct? what i do for white is i prime black, with a white overspray(do this carefully, if it gets grainy at all you're fucked. this gives you a solid base to paint a light colour over, but also shades in recesses in a way that a wash over white primer doesnt.
then, either base with celestra grey, or carefully layer with ulthuan grey, white scar for highlights, black wash where appropriate, be very careful with the wash as well as make sure the ulthuan grey is thinned enough or you'll end up with some small chunks, and let each layer dry properly

Honestly, with how many ways there are to get Wrecker in an army taking buildings doesn't seem like a very good idea unless you want them for narrative purposes. In that case, though, by all means, as they should make for interesting missions as long as you design the board around it.
>>
>>44922561
>>44922476
If that's just a concept for a base color that you're going to add more details and highlighting to then I guess it's... okay-ish, but if you're planning up putting dudes like that on the board without any more painting than that I feel bad for whoever is playing with you and has to look at that crap.

There's been a lot of discussion in the past few days about various legions and how to build their 20-man troop blobs, and that's got me thinking - which legion do you all think has the best synergies and builds for said 20-blobs that are a staple in so many army lists? There's a lot of different bonuses in the various legions, but many legions seem to do better than others and I'm curious how people rank them.

Personally I'm partial to Iron Hands and Raven Guard for Legion Tacticals and Imperial Fists for Breachers; IH are effectively T5 against shooting, Raven Guard get Infiltrate and cheap upgrades for Night Vision (any character) and Stealth (IC only), and Imperial Fists get +1 BS to bolters and +1T for Breachers if using their RoW. Breacher blobs do get very pricey, but that +1T applies to both shooting and close combat plus having an invulnerable save has the potential to save a unit from getting totally blown the fuck out by AP2/3 pie plates and templates.

That said I'm not super familiar with a lot of the traitor legion builds so if there's better 20-blob synergies I'd love to know about them. Plus, what about 20-blobs in Spartans? Super expensive, but it seems like it could be powerful in the right list.
>>
>>44925379
Iron Warriors don't take morale checks from shooting so they're super hard to move from objectives since you need to assault them to really get rid of that 20 man blob. Also their right of war allows them to shoot rapid fire weapons and then make a disordered charge. Pretty nasty when you have a 20 man blob with bolters and extra CCW to negate that disordered charge penalty.
>>
>>44925379

> World Eaters
20 free Chainaxes

> Sons of Horus
20 piledrivers
>>
>>44925379
I think all legions can make them work quite well and differently, the ones that kind of cant are EC/DG (Can still be good, just not as good as others)/WB and Salamanders.
>>
>>44925379

Iron Hands are good for their toughness, Raven Guard for Infiltrate (Infiltration + FotL is the funniest shit ever).

World Eaters are fun if a little basic with it. Emperor's Children can be surprisingly fun here with Crusader + Phoenix Spear on the Sarge, especially if you have one of their bonuses to combat
>>
>>44925440
>20 free Chainaxes
I remember seeing the argument in a previous thread that you didn't have to actually pay for the chainswords first since it states they only have to "have access" to it and then get chainaxes for free instead. Seems bizarre and not working as intended, but WE isn't exactly at the top of the pile so it's hard to care. Anyone ever email FW about it?
> Sons of Horus
I thought everyone just spammed Reaver squads with SoH? Is Merciless Fighters actually that useful?
>>
>>44925808
>Chainaxes

>Merciless Fighter

It's shit right now, hopefully the revisions they're planning in the next redbook make it useful.

Hmm is running a hundred marines in 5 20 man blobs a viable choice? I saw a guy selling over a hundred marines on gumtree and I'm kinda tempted just to run a huge 'bolterhorde' that my opponent wouldn't have a chance to kill.
I'm thinking IF for that sweet +1bs, but it seems overkill and would leave my 2 vindicators useless since they'll drown everything with cheap bolters.
So Now I'm confused and want to run raven guard for grabbing objectives 1st turn.
So fucking hard to choose here.

The other day I had this weird thought in the middle of the night, I was still kind of asleep but it got me thinking:

Alexis Polux warlord trait can re-deploy a unit from reserve or into reserves, does that mean that he can redeploy a flyer from reserves into the table?

>After both sides are deployed but before which side gets the first turn is determined, the Warlord's side may redeploy one of their units within the limitations of the mission being played. This may place a unit that had been deployed normally into reserve, or bring a unit out of reserve.

Is this a viable idea or am I reading it wrong?
>>
>>44926142
I think if you're running that many tacticals you'd want to run Raven Guard or Alpha Legion (since AL's Mutable Tactics lets you pretend to be Raven Guard, more or less). That many dudes are gonna have a hard time making it up the board intact and infiltrating them (especially if you can get up into FotL range) gets around that issue pretty well.

Personally if I were going to do IF I'd do Breachers all the way. That extra +1T from The Stone Gauntlet is just so good, even if it means paying ~100 points more per blob.

>>44926221
Y'know, RAW I don't see why not? Definitely something to email FW about, though. One of the Solar Auxilia commanders has a warlord trait that lets him do the same thing but with D3 units, which is potentially ridiculous if used on fliers.
>>
>>44926142

Which legion is the best for dreadnoughts? Both crunch and fluff, who wins? It seems like Iron Hands would work well with contemptors, with their RoW giving them Blessed Autosimulcra. Are salamanders the fluffiest for a dreadnought focused list, since they have a dreadnought HQ?

>>
>>44926221
It redeploys a unit, flyers cannot be deployed on the table. If he were to bring a unit on exactly as if it were deployed from reserve (ie, it could outflank etc as well) then I'd say you could but the way it is worded just makes flyers an illegal target for that rule.
>>
>>44926731

Iunno. Even the EC have a dreadnought HQ. I'm sure someone else must too.
>>
>>44926804
Rylanor's an Elites choice.
>>
>>44926731
None in particular, I guess. How many are you really intending on running?
With Ferrus Manus on the table, probably Iron Hands. Along with Salamanders, it's the fluffiest Legion to have dreads as well.
>>
>>44926502
You should have enough points for stuff like melta bombs and power fists at the very least, and probably one heavy support choice. But, yeah, going more than three units of 20 tacticals does start to make you run light on support weapons for killing enemy armor. Breachers can get away with taking melta bombs on the entire unit, but if you run 100 breachers with melta bombs that's going to be hilariously expensive.
>>
>>44926886
In all honesty I don't play, I just really like the idea of dreadnoughts
>>
>>44926803
Well flyers are automatically put on reserve and according to the trait Polux can "bring a unit out of reserve" and into the table before the game begins.

> (ie, it could outflank etc as well)

Outflanking units cannot be used with this unless you place them from reserves into your deployment zone, the "Bring a unit in or out of reserves" happens before the game begins, therefore no outflanking or deep striking but placing a unit in or out of reserve into your deployment zone.

>>
My last opponent said that when one shot from a rapid fire plasma gun over heats, the other shot is discard too, is that true?

Also he told me that I have to roll all of my plasma guns together instead of rolling for each guy like how I like to do.
>>
>>44931749
No on the former, you keep the shot that didn't roast your face off and kinda on the latter.

You are supposed to roll all of the same weapon at the same time, which you are doing, just on a model per model basis (and I think you're right on doing so if you can do it quickly, it does make figuring out gets hot easier). Really why would he even have a problem? It works out the same in the end.
>>
>>44931849
I always rolled for each guy by himself in case one overheats twice. No reason two people should be killed by one gun.
>>
>>44931892
If you do roll it all together then randomly allocate gets hot afterwards, surely you'd allow for the possibility of a marine getting hit twice. Otherwise is just unfair as you say.

I wonder why they made a whole new HB with the current hip fired one when they already had the shoulder fire one.
>>
>>44922195
Resoundly yes, although that would be the case even if the Spartan wasn't excellent value. Phobos is DIDaf.

I find making the front TLHB optional and demoting the TL Lascannons to HBs, then allowing granting all three guns Razorback options, balances the vehicle.

Yeah.

I'm amazed that the Spartan can stuff in 150% more dudes while the hull isn't really that much bigger than the Phobos and it packs twice as many lascannons. One reason the Crusader can pack more models in it because it takes out the lascannon generators. Spartan stuffs in more generators and can transport more dudes.

It's weird even the Prometheus doesn't get more transport space. Not only does it exchange the lascannons for heavy bolters (with external ammo stores), but it also removes the front HB. Surely there's more room in there for more dudes.

1498/1500 Dark Angels list, obviously subject to change once the next book drops but for now it's this.

HQ
Terminator Delegatus twin Lightning claws
Terminator Command Squad, x4TLCs, x1LC, x1 autocannon

ELITES
Dreadnought, x2 Volkite Culverin, Havoc Launcher

X3 laser rapiers

TROOPS
x10 Cataphractii Terminators, x6 powerfists, x2 autocannons

x10 Terminators, x4 combiweapons, x2 autocannons

Command Squad takes on anything 3+ or higher, powerfists and rapiers go after hard targets, Dreadnought handles hordes and the combweapon Squad are magnetised to fit the opponent. Using furious charge instead of stubborn as it benefits the army more. All Terminator Squads try to stay in the 6 inch Fearless bubble as much as possible. Thoughts?

I think that Sons of Horus can be summed up as 'Reavers and Dreadclaws'. Maloghurst also gets a pass, but only because he enables the 'Reaver' bit.

Your LA rule might as well read 'Can play Orbital Assault and Pride without needing a Rite' for all the game effect it has. That said, Reavers and Dreadclaws are good enough that it all works out anyway.

> Deep Strike almost anywhere on the board, fuck your scatter
> Flat Out 18"
> Move 6"
> Disembark and charge Turn 2

It's all groovy. That said I can't wait for a redone set of Sons rules because they are both beautiful and the central antagonists, so they need some representation on the board.

> Edge of the Spear
> Units arriving from Deep Strike only scatter D6" if they are placed within 12" of an enemy unit. Any Reserves rolls can be rerolled.

> Go for the Throat
> All models with LA:SoH have the Preferred Enemy special rule when attacking the enemy Warlord, or a squad that the Warlord is a part of.

> Merciless Fighter
> Sons of Horus inflict Hammer of Wrath hits when they charge an enemy unit smaller than themselves.

> Justaerin hit at I2 rather than Unwieldy, gain Zealot.

>>44936371
I think there's two decks to the Spartan. Two cramped decks, but it's possible there's an elevator or some such. Perhaps the first Terminators into the vessel stand on platforms, get elevated up while crouching slightly, and then more fit underneath.
>>
>>44936465
I reckon you'd be better served with single claws and a few fists/hammers in the termie units. Partly because dual claws are weirdly overpriced lic, but also to add variety to the unit.
>>
>>44936588
Best changes to the SoH LA I've seen thus far. I'd perhaps modify GftT to nominate a single enemy unit at the start of the battle, as it isn't always the commander that's the prime target. Maybe give a choice between Warlord, Lord of War (lol name redundancy) or the most expensive single unit/model if an unlimited choice is too unrefined.

I want to add combat blades to my BaC tacticals by gluing them to their hips rather than hanging off their backpacks, but the pieces have indentations by the buckles where they're supposed to be attached to the backpack exhausts.

So now that most of my double BaC lot is nearly done, I want to pose a question. How many anons here have more than one legion? I mostly have alphas because I love thier tactics and shenanigans, but Death Guard aesthetics speak to me. So while its mostly alpha, I have a terminator squad, 10 vets, and a chaplain all spruced up as Death Guard, but I plan on slowly grabbing MkII armour and some vehicles for em.

So in summary: I have alphas at the moment for shenanigans, but plan on growing death guard for seige-like lists.

Typhon and Cerberus are built on the Spartan hull.

Fellblade, Glaive and Falchion models even use parts of the Baneblade kit. And in old art they're basically different Baneblade variants. For example in the HH card game Fellblade looked like a Baneblade with a rounded turret.

I don't care if he coined the name, plasma will never, ever work like that. If it were the coolant, that would be great, it would make suggest a degree of thought went into the phrase "plasma reactor," and would act just as described. Actual molten metal pouring out would be acceptable, given that Dies Irae is an Emperor titan and has a lot of metal to pour. But plasma is an ionized gas. If it pours, it's not plasma.

The Spartan as is is a huge fucking problem in 30k, it's just too good, too cheap, too reliable and too flexible.
Any force with a melee deathstar will invariably sport one at least, though it'll be often multiples.
I wonder if making it a Superheavy LoW like its brethren Typhon and Cerberus and an increased price tag (~380, I guess) would fix the worst issues.
>>
Now that the game is crawling in BaC players, does the meta change at all? It seems like a massive portion of the playerbase will now be running their army on a box / boxes, maybe adding in a couple of resin pieces or trying to port 40k units over.

So swarms of Veteran Tacticals and Cataphractii. Almost definitely playing Pride to make the lists legal. A fair few Contemptors and I expect every list is packing a Praetor.

Minimal armour pieces. Probably nobody wanting to pay for Rapiers or Spartans, outside of bootlegging an artillery carriage.

Seems unlikely you'd see much firepower beyond Sniper Bolters and the Dreadnought. Vehicle time?
>>
>>44958096
You are assuming that they wont buy Mars pattern rhinos, and predators. expect a lot of '40k' armour. Of course buying a single Sicarian or Fire Raptor is also not out of the question
>>
>>44958073
Price tag, sure. LoW... probably not. You'd be able to take two in one LoW slot and still get all your HS slots. Though it'd come at the cost of a Primarch, I guess.

The problem is the flare shield, imo. They should either get rid of it or make it much more expensive.
>>
>>44958136

If they had just done a full on resin version of the old Mk. 1, I would have enjoyed it way more. I also enjoy the Mars pattern metal bawxes, so why not use them since they're kosher for 30k?

Give it some time. Not everyone is ready to drop thousands of dollars for a 5000pts. of FW resin at the drop of a hat. People need to toy around and see what they enjoy and what they want to get next.

Mars Pattern Rhino's were already around during the Heresy, the Deimos was more common though. Besides, it's an excuse to use the cool FW Rhino doors for your Legion.

After it got brought up earlier in the thread, I've been thinking about it and the transport capacity thing doesn't seem right.

Maybe a Spartan could have a cap of 20, no Flare Shield and no sponsons at 320. Then a Flare shield could be bought for 15+ points, reducing capacity by 2, and either single lascannon sponsons could be bought for 30pts or dual for 50pts, each which reduces the cap by 3/6 respectively. Fluff and balance then work out.

I wonder, did the old spartan have an assault ramp at the front?

Yeah, a little stepladder comes out.

Their rules suck and don't benefit blobs really. DG do better with deathwing and MSU heavenly support

I use the plastic chaos predator for my VIIIth Legion Spoop Lords. It comes with lots of skulls and spikes and I like the sweet gargoyle heads on the guns.

Oh my word, the Terminators got on top of it? That's sort of cool and stupid at once. Like the huge tracks are shielding them from most angles, but what are they going to do up there?

A mechanicum vehicle with their spindle-built forcefield designs could really whirl with this. A vehicle that can activate or deactivate a bubble to count as open-topped or not, with the passengers visible on the top platform.

They're manning pintle-mounted weapons pointing front and back.

Of course. No remote controls back in the Rogue Trader days, got to send termies up to man what they carry as a sidearm.

Sure they did. Old Rhinos had guns on top without a dude manning them. But you also had manned pintle guns. I don't know why it has terminators, in art I've seen it's basic PA marines up there.

Unless the spartan had heavy bolters or such on the turrets, that makes even less sense. Ah well.
