None of what they were doing would work if not for the hedrons, and hence, the skills and power of the oldwalkers. It wasn't implied they could never have finished off the Eldrazi, they broke up before they did, and Ugin seemed to think it was a very bad idea. The new walkers used the hedrons and leylines conveniently left behind to drag the eldrazi to the physical plane, where chandra's fire (presumably also fueled by the leylines) did the thing.
Also, anyone calling them sues a) doesn't know what the term means b) is wrong (Jace especially gets his shit pushed in on a regular basis) and c) is a retard for using the term mary sue like it means anything at all past implying his own utter and undying autism.

I kinda doubt they'll introduce big new threats like that for the next few blocks. They'll probably spend some time on the planeswalkers all getting to know themselves. Remember that during the time of Theros, Elspeth, Ajani, and Kiora all knew of the three big threats (Phyrexia, Bolas, the Eldrazi) but never really talked to each other about those.
