Is it a hivemind run directly by the queen?
Or can the drones just think for themselves?
I support having not mindless minions.

Burning. Searing. Hot. Hot. Hot. The blazing sun, it burns. You squirm on the hot sand, a pupa of unbridled possibility. Burrowing quickly to escape the burn you find yourself in the cool lower sand. Settling in you begin gestation, with the wonders of what's to come.

Hive mind. Short range telepathy allows for relatively unintelligent drones to combine their reasoning capacities for greater intelligence.

Hive is controlled by the Queen, all hail the queen.
The queen is not us, she's our mother, almost like our deity. Psychically controlled, all her children are compelled to love and obey her, but every insect has his own base personality.

We're the second in command, a hero unit. OP is essentially the queen. We have our own personality. HAIL THE QUEEN.

Since it's your first time I don't want to overbear you, but I was toying with a concept I wanted to introduce in the next civ general, which might help simplify and convey empire management. Take it or leave it.

Basically using military units you can [Conquer territory. The amount of territory you conquer, as m2 and km2 depends on the total strength of the units you send, that end up surviving. At first you conquer say 1002 meters and it gradually, naturally increases to scale of km2. Each time that action is carried it creates a conquest event. At first you go against hostile local flora and fauna, later on non-faction/city state tier "civs" that don't really count as proper civ factions, and eventually if there's no neutral land left you face faction armies after declaring war.

You can choose how much total amount of terrain there's in the given area, say, an island or a continent, and it's info that can be given when scouting the entire area. You're not shooting yourself in the foot with this since there can always be more continents and islands.

Amount of terrain helps decide food generation (or just its cap, which is filled with worker units) and amount of new nests (village tier). Each X amount of terrain, say 20 square kilometers, allows the creation of a new nest. Each X nests (every 4 nests?) allows the creation of a hive (city tier) and associated bonuses to fluff.

Just toying with an idea, maybe consider it for the next thread when you'll have more time to plan how it works, or not at all.

The spire quickly takes form, with the drones carving out a solid base. During this process somethings strikes your interest. The drones have begun using their poison, mixed with strippings of palm fronds and water, to create an adhesive. Slathering it onto the sand structure, it hardens within moments. "KNOWLEDGE IS THE KEY TO SURVIVAL."
You swoop low over the creatures, spitting your poison haphazardly over the creatures. At first, it seems they don't even notice, the poison just dribbling over their harden shell. Then suddenly on cue one of them begins convulsing; the neurotoxin going to work on their nervous system. Strangely enough, the others react to this, immediately burrowing themselves once more in the sand, in a twisting, rolling motion. You fly over one of the burrowing, and grab it with your legs. You begin to fly off, but the creature is too heavy, only pulling it about 10 feet into the air before you must let go. It falls to the sand, landing on its blue shell. You take note of the much softer underbelly, but before you can react, the creature begins its rolling, spinning burrowing action and in once again buried in the sand. The others are gone and the only one that remains convulses in the sand.

Flipping over the dying blue creature you sink your mandibles into the soft underbelly of it. The flesh is juicy, salty, nutritious; A fine source of nourishment for a growing hive. You gorge yourself on its salty flesh, the creature gargling out its final breaths. Once you have eaten your fill, you fly haphazardly back towards your hive, interested in the progress of your new spire.

While we have a Bug Civ up, a quick question, please.
Bug Civ is by far the most popular Civ type, I find. What is it about Bugs everyone likes?
>>
Rolled 43 (1d100)

>>44561142
>>
>>44561294
Just being in control of bugs I'd guess since we get to mutate a bit and it's more of a challenge for diplomatic outcomes but if a thread ever comes up with a good mutation to overcome that people really get into it
>>
>>44561294
Bugs are awesome. They're a very popular trope both in sci fi and fantasy. Bugs have the second most advanced civilization on Earth, after humans, including slaves, terraforming, a monarchy and complex caste system. And they come in numerous flavors, allowing players to mold and customize them so two bug civs are rarely identical.
>>
>>44561294
They are fairly simple and straight forward. Eat, multiple and evolve. Those three things are all you usually have to worry about when it comes to advancing the civ. No having to worry about developing the skills to make buildings, tools, clothes or armor. Just. Eat. Multiple. Evolve.

>All those high rolls

As you make it back your hive, you make out the base of the spire just peeking beyond the tops of the palms. As you land and come closer the overwhelming cries of your drones pierce your thoughts "THEY CAME! THEY CAME! THEY CAME! KILLED KILLED KILLED! Composing yourself, and your drones, examine their thoughts. The bipedals. They attacked while you were gone. The drones were not alerted to their presence, a costly mistake. "TAKE TAKE TAKE! THEY TAKE BROTHERS!" It appears these Bipedals are hunting us as I hunted the blue sea bugs.
Good news, the spire is well underway and very defensible. The surviving drones were able to hide inside after the initial attack. Spewing forth the digested seabug, you feed your remaining drones and pass on the gained knowledge of them.

As you begin to lay your eggs, you feel something is not right. This generation is flawed. Something is now right; this genetics is all twisted and wrong. As you settle in for the evening, you can't help but pray to the All-Mother for their survival.
______________________________
Morning comes, and you awake to the new generation in the heat of its birth-feeding. Giant jaws, bulbous bloated bodies, deformed wings, giant serrated arms, chitin to rival even yours! These children of yours, although deformed, will serve the hive well.
"ABOMINATIONS!" You push the thought from your mind as you nestle your new children.

Not soon after does your hunting drones return. Empty mandibled. A shame, but no matter, they will learn in time.

You go about creating a perimeter around the oasis, digging out a moat. Filling it with discarded palm fronds, using your mandible to splinter them into shards. You then create a false top by mixing diluted poison with sand. Strong enough to maintain surface while your children cross it, but gives way to anything heavier. You can't help but gloat at your work.

The day goes on and a drone comes to grab you. "FIN FIN! HIVE ALL DONE." You return to indeed find the spire completed. Towering over three times the height of the palms, with enough room to house a hundred of your children, this is the first step towards a fully functioning hive

You probe the minds of the Bloaters, their thoughts taken up by little outside of "FOOD" and "EAT!" However, it appears they ran into the bipedals, and one of them was killed as the bipedal ran. The rest returned, too hungry to chase. Interesting, they seem afraid of the Bloaters.

You proceed to regurgitate a majority of the seabug for the bloaters, their greedy appetite spurring them into a feeding frenzy. Comforting your drones, you feed them separately. "MUST BRING FOOD TO KEEP BROTHERS FROM EATING YOU" you instruct them.

After feeding, you order your bloaters back to hunting, sending them the directions south this time. After imparting the knowledge they needed, you send them off, their poison-drooling mouths seemingly salivating more.

You settle into the hive, preparing another for another generation of birthing. As you once again split open your abdomen and develop the birthing organ, you hope your children bring food enough for this new generation.
