In 2e DnD they are different.
Think it had to do with what magics where used to animate it. If I recall correctly, a captured elemental spirit animated golems, while Living Armor was animated by one of the wizard/cleric magic spheres (maybe invocation/evocation?)

I always like the bog-standard statue-that-is-also-a-stone-golem. Especially when the "statue" is a nice column.

This could definitely work in a WWII with magic setting. Just make magic a lost art, only practised among secret societies. Base the magic on Old Testament shenanigans.
Also, would it be economical for a wizard to build a Wickerman and subsequently use the ashes of those burnt to animate an ash golem? Or could all those ashes be better spent on something else?
