In my setting Goblinoids have an unusual life cycle. It's not exactly this, but you guys can judge. Goblinoids are a single eusocial species of humanoids that life in large colonies. The species is separated into several castes:
-Goblins are nonbreeding females. They are the worker caste, charged with caring for infants, harvesting food, and general labor.
-Hobgoblins are nonbreeding males. They are the soldier caste, and defend the colony and organize raids.
-When there is no breeding female present, a Goblin will begin to grow larger, and develop secondary sex traits, becoming a Queen. Upon developing into a Queen, she will instinctively flee the colony. There is usually only one queen per colony.
-Bugbears are breeding males: a small percentage of Hobgoblins will transform into Bugbears when they reach adulthood. The bugbears pursue the fleeing Queen, often killing each other during this process.
The Queen will mate with several Bugbears during her "flight" (including some from other colonies) and after several weeks she will return to the colony pregnant. She will quickly swell to an enormous size, producing a litter of about 100 goblinoid infants. Queens nearly always die in labor.

This is why there's the "usually" qualifier on the one queen per colony. On the rare occasion where two Goblins develop into Queens at the same time they will begin to scheme against each other, engaging in what is in effect a political struggle. The loser is exiled along with whatever followers (hobgoblins and goblins alike) they had managed to gather. If the exiled queen survives she will found a new colony.

It's seasonal. The queen's "mating flight" occurs in the spring, her pregnancy lasts over the course of the summer, and she gives birth in the autumn, giving the new Queen(s) that winter to develop sexually.
This strict seasonal cycle also helps to ensure the Goblins (Workers) are focused: during the winter there are no crops to worry about, so that is when they can be focused on caring for the infants. When spring rolls around the children require less direct care, leaving the Goblins free to plant.
