Can't remember how many it holds, but Risk comes to mind. It's basic, but that just means everyone will understand it. Only issue is number of players.

I wouldn't recommend Monopoly. Maybe Pictionary. You can proably find some quick-start rules for some PnP in one of the generals.

For that many people I'd definitely go for card games. Board games are good but they tend to last longer than the fun does.

Uno and Mao are personal favorites for this situation.
