Pretty much this. The original Tau Quest was great and it really grew organically from a generic survival horror scenario. It had an interesting cast of supporting characters, some memorable boss fights and a couple of legitimately well executed reveals. Xeno only got to be as spammed as she did because it was as good as it was.
Even some of the follow-on original content like Xeno's Adventure, while much more light-hearted (cutesy, even) was still engaging, if inconsistent with the original tone.
The thing a lot of people seem to neglect, however, is that there was an anti-Xeno element from the very beginning. Someone tried to hijack the thread, OP's trip got cracked, people posted entire wikipedia articles to eat up bumps; it was a mess. It got so bad that Moot, Himself, showed up and deleted all the bullshit, banned a bunch of people and posted a sticky that said quest threads were explicitly permitted.
Tau Quest wasn't the first quest thread (Ruby Quest definitely predated it and I think Frost Giantess Quest started contemporaneously), but it happened to be really big, really early on and some people have just never gotten over it. It created sort of a codependent cycle with the Xenofags and anti-Xenofags antagonizing each other, forever.
