One idea for a universe I've always had has been Germany fucks up the invasion of France and is halted in Belgium. Realizing that they won't win a prolonged conflict against France and Britain they agree to peace on the terms that Germany is allowed to retain its conquests in Poland as well as retain control of Schleswig, France and Britain agree as they are starting to see the Soviets as the greater threat.
Japan meanwhile eventually bleeds itself fighting in China. In time the Kuomintang manage to drive Japan out and stabilize and centralize their power. Despite losing their holdings on mainland Asia Japan retains control of Taiwan and maintains a large and powerful navy.
While each side prepares for the inevitable war, it never happens each side fights for control of colonies and client states through proxy wars, but nobody is willing to fire the shot to kick off world war three.

Decided I'd have the first solar system be a test area on the far end of the universe. Make it have around 10 planets or so, and inhibit their ability to travel through space. Set one planet to go EVO: Search for Evolution style, and come back later to mold it. That will be the control world. The others being tech based, magic based, a blend of the two, grimdark, hopefulbright, magical realm, a world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn't exist, a hyper religious one, and a blank slate world.
Magical realm is for getting the kinks out of the way. Religious one is observing if such a world can function and how to avoid the worst pit traps of it on future worlds. Blank slate is where the metaphysics of other worlds all work, and I'll add what works to it then at the end compare it to the control world. Scrap all but the blank slate and control world then link the two at the end and move on.
After that, I'll likely go around creating things for fun, and trying to make it work as well as possible from earlier experiments.
