A naytheist is someone who doesn't worship the gods because that just encourages him. Their primary activities are dodging lightning bolts, and cleaning off the egg from their houses when the gods get rowdy.
>>
>>44341136
Not that anon but a naytheist is a character in a fantasy setting in which gods/magic/divine happenings are clearly present (omnipresent even), observable, and interactable, but who still insists that they don't exist despite all evidence to the contrary. It is a character type that occasionally shows up in bad fantasy, and I have seen it played a few times (though usually as a joke).

Not all examples are terrible. Sargeant simony, for example. He refuses to believe in gods even when they speak to him personally. Hating them that much is basically belief anyway, as far as they're concerned. Granted, it's Discworld so it's tongue in cheek anyway
>>
>>44341230
Well I mean, yeah, if it's done for comedy or as a joke it works. But if it's supposed to be serious, and the character isn't clearly intended and written to be a delusional weirdo who pretends things he doesn't like don't exist, then it just generally... doesn't so much.

The emperor of man is kinda terrifying when you get down to it a creature, innately of human origin, yet so divorced from it as to not relate to any human, and then proclaims itself leader of man kind, controlling people with memetic charisma and killing anyone who can resist, and worst of all, he's absolutely right to do this

>>
>>44342091
Looking down upon you. Just because you're part of my city doesn't make you suddenly rise in caste.

>>44342179
It's a thread about terrifying creatures. Don't even pay attention to what the worst of /tg/ decides to do with the topic.

Paying attention to the lowest caste and their activities is senseless, since they do the same thing regardless of topic. Just ignore them, since it's not like they'll ever get any better.
>>
>>44342288
They're creatures of rotting flesh and metal. They use a process called compleation to achieve the perfect form. The perfect form is under debate but it most certainly involves replacing over long periods of time all the flesh with artificial bits until they're completely artificial. Stage one is a newt grown in a vat till adulthood which yields a sexless human looking being that is then converted slowly until its perfect. The goal is to make a perfectly efficient machine.
>>
>>44341185
>>44341194
What if he or her hust believes they aren't real gods.
>>
>>44342415
Right? Its not like they're immortal, can make universe changing miracles happen, bestow powers upon people of their choosing, or created the universe or anything, right?
>>
>>44342415
That is more reasonable, but I'd still say the character needs a good in-universe reason to believe that for it to work.
>>
>>44342444

To be fair, not all the entities people call gods are of the same caliber.

For exemple, a demon that can be beated by an experienced adventurer could be worshipped as a god by some cults.

In other settings, the gods didn't create the world and can't do much outside of the domain they control.

"They're powerful, but not gods" can make sense.

A fedora I used to know used that same argument. It works for some settings, sure, but he never could answer this simple question: So what's the difference? As the saying goes, if it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, and rapes hella bitches like a duck, it is probably a duck, or something so god damn close that you may as well call it a duck. Well, the saying is SOMETHING like that, I guess.

What I'm trying to say here is that if a creature has the power and longevity of a god, you may as well call it a god when you have no proof otherwise and no way to get proof. Characters like that are stupid because they have no reason to believe the gods aren't gods, yet they for some reason decide to believe that. People don't just decide to believe things, they either learn them from environment or from personal research. So a character raised to believe the gods are, indeed, gods, and having no research or evidence to the contrary, would not come to the conclusion that the gods are just something that looks, acts, and rapes like a god but totally isn't a god you guys.
>>
>>44342576
I think you should read some philosophy on the subject. Some very powerful being is or not a god? Pretty subjective buddy.
>>
>>44342296
But meddling with the lower caste for the sake of making a ruckus is fun. Like little ans they crawl, especially when someone who thinks of himself as better, wiser or higher tries to lead the herd. It always goes awry.
That said, this probably is the prime example.
>>
>>44341136
Raging against the heavens has zero crossover with Atheism.

An Atheism denies that gods even exist. Why would he rage against something that doesn't exist? That would be insane.

A believe who feels unduly punished rages against the heavens.

>>44342576
It's a simple matter of degree or power. If you want us to tell you "at what number of Hit Dice" you have a god or "what base attack bonus" then I'm sorry, but broadly, degree.

That's traditionally how it has been in polytheistic religions. There really isn't a hard and fast rule, although demi-gods are often held to be "half divine" or "half god",basically.

Also, I would look at how traditional religions and people evaluated Gods, and divine things.

If you want a tradition that people know about and can philosophically support some degree of cynicism or pragmatism about "gods" and stuff, look at Shinto.

Yes, some will cry Weaboo, but truly, there are gods, and Gods in that system, and the real notion that some gods or spirits sort of overlap in a way, or can be in some sense, sort of petty, really. Not weak, even a spirit of a single mountain is still truly powerful, and will probably kick your ass if you aren't careful, and especially on his mountain, but he's not like, the hugest thing ever. There are bounds. You might well outsmart him, or if you are scary powerful (like, maybe even a bit divine/an actual spirit or god) kick his ass. You would be quite powerful though.

I mean, you also generally have the category in all religions of "divine beings that are not gods, or whatever". There is a sense of hierarchy.

A top level God fucks everyone up. But there are other things around.

For a funny take that also makes sense, look at Terry Pratchett. You might also look at Neil Gaiman, although both skew modern. (belief is an important thing, although Gaiman's Gods never really stop existing even if no one believes. They just like, live in a shitty apartment in Philly or work as a Hooker, or something.)

What? Are you really just arguing against some fedora strawman? Calm down you fucking tumblrina.
The only type of god that is even remotely possible of being an "objective" god is a fully omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent god.
Anything else? Subjectice.
To an ant, a man is a god, an eldritch thing they can't even recognize that has a lifespan much much larger and can destroy billions of them easily, all this by your criteria.
Likewise, to a man, some very powerful creature can be seen as a god. Which means the criteria isn't fixed...
Hence subjectice, you butthurt fag.

The debate isL at which point do you call them gods?

Is it because they're immortals? A D&D imp is immortal, unless detroyed in specific circumstences, and they're not gods

Is it because they're worshiped? Some mortals are worshiped.

Is it because they have a lot of power? Some gods are weak.

Personaly, I think it makes more sense in settings like D&D to consider the gods like a specific kind of supernatural entities that has some overlaps with other kinds, and in which one can be turned into

I like what another guy said. The only thing that could truly, objectively be called a god with no room for disagreement whatsoever is the all-powerful, all-creating Abrahamic God. Everything else is up for debate.

I mean, in Judeo-Christian tradition, it's really easy for people to mistake an angel or a demon for a god, with good reason, too. So what a Viking might call a god, a Christian or Muslim would probably call a demon.

>>
>>44343440

Well, an omnipotent entity, Abrahamic or not, would be objectively superior to everything.

The question that it fits the definition of a god depends entirely of which definition you're using.

The good thing about fictional works is that the author can make a definition that is definitive, withiing this particular setting.

>>
>>44342576

The Athar always made sense. There's demonstrable proof in the Planescape setting that gods are just immensely powerful space wizards, and it's practically commonplace. Hell, anyone who's done any research into the history of Vecna (admittedly not an easy thing to do) would probably develop at least atheistic leanings.

You're also presupposing the idea that gods are deserving of worship or are inherently 'divine' or whatever, which is what an atheist would disagree with. The Athar never claimed the 'gods' didn't exist (and neither would any atheist in a setting like DnD), just that they're no more or less divine than anything else, just ridiculously powerful.

Fair enough. I'm just saying that you couldn't legitimately NOT call an omnipotent entity a god, since by any standard imaginable it is one.
>>
>>44342576
>What I'm trying to say here is that if a creature has the power and longevity of a god, you may as well call it a god

But why do they need tithes and worship if they're "truly" "gods" and not just extremely powerful entities? And how come some die/are still dying out in the ephemeral plane?
>>
>>44343557
>>44343557
I think you need to read things properly.
I am arguing that the definition of a god is subjectice. Which is essentially creative liberty define the gods and the views of the gods as you wish, in your setting.

Somehow I am butthurt?
Over arguing that there is no one objective true way ?
>>
>>44342444
the only one of those examples characters or villainous mages like liches can't do is say they created the universe (maybe a universe) but whether or not the setting describes a universe creator with explicit metaphysical certitude (they hardly do) there's no reason a character in setting couldn't doubt it, as they aren't privy to the authorial truth of their own written setting

Well, an omnipotent entitiy is anything it wants, by definition. So it would be a god by all definitions, unless it didn't want to.

Like, if we define a god as "something that is worshiped", the omnipotent entity could simply make so it is not worshiped.

Anomalous was a horror/mystery setting based in a post apocalyptic landscape of eastern Europe. It was best if players new very little about the setting.

Certain areas in the world, classified as "zones" started producing anomalies. At first, just strange weather patterns or occasional mutations of the local fauna.

Anomalous takes place about 100 years after the nuclear apocalypse. A new, loose world government has been established, but in reality it is just a few scattered special interest groups.

These "zones" have started to produce much more powerful anomalies as time goes on. Completely unfathomable monsters. But, at the same time, a new type of anomaly has been discovered. Type-S anomalies, when ingested, give the user specific latent telekinetic abilities.

Anomaly #12 "Flesh Workshop" for example, appears as an unnaturally red apple. Almost inconspicuous at first, but past the skin its a ball of loose unidentified muscle. It allows the user to control a limited amount of flesh that is visible to them.

Others include kind of "expected" powers like electromagnetic manipulation, water manipulation, etc. While there are other way more specific ones, that tend to be more potent.

Anywho, the premise is people are trying to get these Type-S anomalies for research/to sale. Or maybe the PCs just live in one of these "zones" and are looking to survive. Meanwhile, they might discover a particularly threatening anomaly that they have to defeat or disrupt.

What most people don't know however, is Anomalies are born of a mix of the Noosphere and concentrated radiation. Zones are always populated. The people who are stuck there are usually afraid, desperate, and sometimes cruel. This reflects in the anomalies of the zone.

Because there are different cultures, there are different zones. And not all anomalies are unfriendly. Seekers (in pic) for example, find joy in discovery, exploring, and trading. They cooperate with human settlements.

This post was almost too long.

The state of mind of the people in a zone directly effect the environment. In that way, the PCs and other events can increase, decrease, or change the nature of the challenges they face when exploring the Zone. It'll be hard to restore hope to people, however, and the PCs probably don't know about the Noosphere.

In one campaign, the PCs began by working for a group of researchers and environmentalists. Eventually, their research took them to a particularly inhospitable part of the zone. They discovered a theme among the anomilies here. All of them had big, human smiles. Eventually they found out that a conscious anomaly who named himself the Laughing God had spawned from a civilization of sadistic raiders in this part of the zone. The Laughing God was intent on gathering anomilies so he could spread The Zone and essentially destroy the world. The PCs I played with opted to mostly take out the raider population and gather Type-S anomalies to weaken him.

I've run others though. This was a hasty write up, I lost my Player's Guide. So it was probably kind of shitty. Sorry!
>>
>>44347887
I seen it on multiple occasions. One single deathclaw will wipe out an entire settlement. I seen an entire village of raiders, every one with a gun, get ripped apart by one deathclaw. Talk about scary, the only thing that can stop them is a huge, fortified wall. What can be scarier than knowing that a bipedal manifestation of death is inside and will sniff you out just given the little time killing everyone else will give you.

It might be my all-time favorite Eldrazi – It always struck me as a sort of prototitan, a member of the brood (Probably Kozilek's) that had grown and evolved almost to the point of becoming a Titan itself and spawning its own brood.

Talking about this, Void Winnower also fits that bill, albeit that one's definitely part of Ulamog's brood.

Typically it includes the belief that religious rituals have no supernatural significance, and that gods ignore all prayers and worship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misotheism
>Misotheism is the "hatred of God" or "hatred of the gods" (from the Greek adjective μισόθεος "hating the gods", a compound of μῖσος "hatred" and θεός "god"). In some varieties of polytheism, it was considered possible to inflict punishment on gods by ceasing to worship them[citation needed]. Thus, Hrafnkell, protagonist of the eponymous Icelandic saga set in the 10th century, as his temple to Freyr is burnt and he is enslaved states that "I think it is folly to have faith in gods", never performing another sacrifice, a position described in the sagas as goðlauss, "godless". Jacob Grimm in his Teutonic Mythology observes that:

Where are you getting this from? White Phyerexia always seemed squeaky clean to me, very sterile. Not dead, just lifeless like porcelain dolls.

Nah m8. Look at the hips. Those are plates with spikes. Spread the legs would force them away from you and you can see from here theres nothing else in the crotch area to worry about. Those spikes on the inner thigh aren't spikes, they're where the plate meets the flesh so no pointies. You can even see a nice place for your hands between the expose ribs and hip plates. If you look closely you'll see the legs are actually smooth as the plates terminate into the flesh avoid the sharp edges. The rest is just careful placement and playful scratches. mountains need climbing, i won't let pointy rocks stop me.

Hell all the areas near to you would be pretty safe since the spikes would be facing entirely away or at odds to you and all grabbable surfaces are pretty smooth.
