Utter unfitness for any commission in any real world military.

Where's Crichton?

Not that I would, living in the Farscape universe would be a bitch.
>>
>>44327536
He's not a captain. In fact, in the context of the Farscape universe, he's more like a village rube who catapulted himself into the interstellar community because he lucked onto an advanced concept. If anyone is Moya's captain, it's Pilot. But the entire crew is constantly conversing, and making decisions as a group. Or even simply as individuals.
>>
>>44327017
Look, the most logical answer here is Picard. Not only is he downright the universally acknowledged Best Captain, but he commands the most desirable ship. The Enterprise-D is basically a cruiseship, and it very rarely goes to war. They hang out in the Federation interior very often, too, and it being the flagship of the fleet gives you ample oppertunity for promotion. So you only need to fear the occasional crazy space alien, and even then you're arguably in the best position to handle it.

With most of the others? Some alien wants to stomp your face in. I mean, Adama is cool and all, but would you enjoy hanging out in smelly, overused space ships, living on permanent war footing and fearing the very real possibility of being wrecked by a toaster? I mean, do you have any idea of the survival rate of WWI pilots? Because that's what you're getting in to.

And Shepherd? You KNOW the ship gets destroyed in the second game, and in the end aliens destroy Earth, and I believe the crew winds up on some planet to form a shitty colony?

Even if you can't stand the sight of his chrome dome, Picard is the best choice.
>>

I don't know what the IASA rank system is like, but it's probably similar to Air Force ranks and "Commander" is usually lower than "Captain" in systems where it's used.

Is there a Star Trek ship equipped with a holodeck that doesn't malfunction horribly at times?

I'd say the inclusion of a holodeck and a replicator would be the most desirable objects of any Star Trek ship.
Now Picards holodeck would fucking malfunction horribly several times a season, but if you wanted to be on Voyagers holodeck you mostly just have to put up with being so far out in space that everyone's fucking retarded

Hostile alien: I'm going to rape your mom.
Sisko: That's certainly bold of you. You might want to reconsider that.
Hostile alien: And your dad.
Sisko: Commander, prepare two quantum torpedoes.
Hostile alien: And you.
Sisko: Cut the transmission. As I was saying, Commander, have engineering attach a cargo pod with two hundred kilograms of trilithium to each torpedo.
Worf: But, sir, the cargo pods would make the torpedoes less effective. The alien ship could evade them easily.
Sisko: I'm not planning to fire at the ship. Helm, set a course for Deraxus III, their nearest colony, warp factor six. Major, send a message out on all frequencies. This is Captain Sisko of the U.S.S. Defiant. In response to their threats against the human race, in approximately two hours I will detonate two quantum torpedos carrying trilithium above their outpost of Deraxus III, thus making the planet uninhabitable to most sentient life forms for the next fifty years. I suggest evacuation plans begin immediately.
[stunned silence from the bridge]
Sisko: What are you waiting for, people? Carry out your orders.
[two hours later, above Deraxus III]
Sisko: Status?
Kira: There seem to be no attempts to evacuate, nor have we been hailed.
Sisko: Mr. Worf, prepare the torpedoes.
Worf: Detaching safeties on torpedoes one and two.
Kira: Sir, the alien vessel just warped in, they're hailing us!
Hostile alien: Do you really expect us to believe a Federation officer would poison a planet over something like this?
Sisko: That's exactly what I'm going to do.
Hostile alien: You're bluffing.
Sisko: Am I? Commander, launch torpedoes.
[Worf just stands there]
Sisko: Commander, I said launch torpedoes!
Worf: Aye sir
[The torpedoes hit the planet, poisoning the atmosphere]
Kira: The trilithium is dispering through the atmosphere, they're scrambling their ships.
Hostile alien: Do you realize what you've done? We're going to rape ALL OF YOU!
Sisko: I've only just begun.

By far, Sisko is the best captain.

The best part about that whole episode was that the poison that was used wasn't toxic to Cardassians, so no real harm was done, in that he just had the Bajoran and Human colonists he bombed move to the Cardassian planet with the Cardassian-specific poison, and moved the displaced Cardassian refugees to the planet he poisoned.

He had a great handle of politics, and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty, and understood that even paradise could be corrupted.
>>

Close, however the test requires more detail. The military rank we were looking for is "captain".

Thanks for your interest, and better luck next year!
>>
Not exactly military but mercenary, I'd love to be serving under Mal Reynolds
>>
>>44335306
You don't have to hold the rank of captain to be the captain of a ship.
>>
>>44335258
Exactly. The colonists needed to be relocated, Sisko just forced them to leave. Were his methods brutish? Absolutely. Were they effective? Obviously. Were they stupid? Not in the slightest. Sisko KNEW that Eddington would only surrender himself and the weapons if it made him a martyr, and the only way to do that was for Sisko to play the villain. People who call Sisko the idiot Captain of the series have no idea how intelligent he really is, and how good he is at getting inside people's heads.

The first time we're introduced to Sisko, he's still reeling from the loss of his wife at the hands of the Borg. He witnessed first-hand how the good-natured idealism of the Federation means nothing when your enemy just wants you DEAD. There's no negotiating with the Borg, no compromise. All you can do is fight, run, or die. When he's made Commander of DS9, he loses the option to run, and he's not going to just lay down and die, and that means fighting.

In a series about idealism, philosophy, and striving for noble goals, Sisko is the grim reminder that sometimes the only real choice you have is fighting for what you believe or dying for nothing.

I think only the Ent-D had that problem. DS9 had a bunch of problems, but the holosuite wasn't one of them (the times where there were issues, it was some other problem, but the holosuites were functioning as intended). Voyager didn't have the holodeck itself malfunction either, but they did have trouble with invading aliens using their holodeck at times.

What I love is that people don't realize that post-TOS Roddenberry was the worst thing that happened to Trek. >correctly used "whom" in a CYOA

Why is it so rare?

Why don't authors realize that if they're not 100% sure about it, they should just use "who", which basically never sounds incorrect.
>>
>>44336418
To be fair, that captaincy is only nominal, in a prestige position - as is practically every position on the ship, who's "crew" is never on board, but is a mark of respect in the navy.

It's basically a combination of the USS Constitution and the HMS Victory, more Victory given Webber's teaboo tendancies, though Victory's official crew is any naval personnel not assigned to any other ship (which can be a shore installation, they're still "ships" and have the HMS prefix) - as all officers and ratings must be assigned to a ship - so is mostly people working at the MOD
>>
>>44338556

IMO, Lucas's more "fun things, with awkward moments and some bland character".

Roddenberry, on the other hand, had to be stopped from having the Ferengi wear giant codpiece to hide enormous genitals and discuss of their version of kama-sutra on screen. And early TNG was "humanity are smug assholes pretending to be more evolved than anyone else"

What?
It was pretty much a three episode long Nadesico special that started messily because the game that explains everything was never translated and ended messily because the sequal was never made because it was 'impossible'.
Other then that there wasn't anything specifically bad about it and stands as strongly as the series itself.

It's a bit of an exageration that the holodeck malfunctioned at the drop of a hat. And not using the holodeck because it occasionally malfunctions is like not driving becaue cars occasionally crash. But if you watch the news and dashcam vids, you'd swear they crash all the damn time.

Even then, just don't do dangerous stuff. Most people just use the holodeck to go skiing, or to fuck Caitians. But in DS9, O'Brien and Bashir use the holodeck to simulate the Battle for Britain, ancient Irish battles, the Alamo, and a campy James Bond sendup. The latter malfunctions in one of the episodes, thanks to sabotage, computer fuckery, and Rom. But it's one of the show's most endearing episodes. Secret agent Bashir saves the day by destroying the world, and the malfunction facilitates an entertaining juxtaposition between the James Bond spy fantasy, and Garak's spy reality.

Divided by 2 janeways, that's 50%.

Still less than the attrition rate of the more "peaceful" captains.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of blood on Janeway the Conqueror's hands, but it's mostly peaceful non human spacefaring civilizations.
>>
>>44342466
>implying people haven't added up the totals
Only 55 died permanently in TOS (some others died, but they got better). Considering 400 crew on the ship, that's only about 15% (and there were transfers and stuff all the time). Janeway lost at least 12 in the very first mission, which is just under 10%.

Yeah, god forbid anything on this board not be poisoned by anime bullshit.

Picard is at 81 certain deaths+an unidentified number of crew from some battle with the romulans. Skipped a few deaths that were later reversed.

Janeway is at 49, estimated (the wiki at one point lists "several", which I subbed in your figure of 12, for when she got pulled into the delta quadrant). I also counted tuvix as 2 people.

Even going into completely unknown and borg controlled territory, Janeway came out of it with less crew death than Picard or Kirk.

Nimoy would agree. He refused to lower himself to marketing IDIC symbols during an episode making sure to express his disdain came from having a sense of dignity.
>>
>>44327017
Penis.

You can't be a starship captain without one.
>>
>>44344552
Nimoy himself was directly jewed by Roddenberry, probably purely out of spite. Spock was by far the breakout character of TOS, especially early on, and Nimoy got a lot of offers to do things like appearances for car dealerships and the like all over the country. Some of these would be like two hour stuff that would pay more than a whole week of acting (something like $1000/wk - Shatner apparently got 5x as much), so of course he wanted to go do this stuff. But Roddenberry didn't like letting him go off work a couple hours early to catch a plane or whatever, which technically was in his rights as the boss, but was still a dick move.

I fucking loved that episode

well, you know, up until Josh Trank used it as inspiration for the new Fantasic 4 movie

>>
>>44348668

But Garak is a sack of shit who doesn't do anything particularly well that anyone else couldn't do.

It's like a character who decided to spread their stats out so they're mediocre at everything, took a few rogue skills, and then poured the rest into single-use contacts for the rest of the campaign, so that he's barely relevant except when the party has to beg contacts out of him.

It didn't have nearly enough plot to be a feature-length movie, and was just full and boring overall. Over half the film is spent watching Ruri wander around doing very little, which is compounded by the fact that she is now a bland milquetoast compared to the sarcastic peanut gallery she was in the TV show. Virtually the entire cast was dumped to cameo level appearances and do next to nothing of note, even a major character like Ryoko. Perhaps most greviously, Akito is put through needlessly tragic events offscreen and turned into the edgiest edgelord from edgyville for the sake of drama, and then fucks off to nowhere at the very end because the writers placed too much faith in their fanbase. Even taking Blank of Three Years into account, PoD is a bad film that just takes a huge dump all over the TV show. It's only saving grace is the sex machine that is the Black Selena.

Picard was the one who let whole civilizations die because "buht prime directive"

That scene in question does go on to explain the importance of captains but I dropped it for brevity.
It was more just picking on Yurika then anything as she was a highly intelligent tactical genius.
Megumi, the purple haired girl at the end, cuts off the explanation just to pick on the captain who goes storming off in tears.

Sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about.
He only suffers from being in the presence of a Star Trek bridge crew, whose talents tend to be exceptional.
Garak was extremely talented in a very large number of fields.
As I recall, he was better in combat that Dukat, yet of course, not as skilled as Kira.

Picard is a bad diplomat. He lets himself be trolled by Q.

That's why sisko hates him.
>"You took the bait, picard, and caused the deaths of my wife and TEN THOUSAND other starfleet personnel as well as countless others. You're not fit to wear that uniform."

It has nothing to do with being locutus. It's all about "We don't need you Q! haw haw haw!"

Au contraire, mon capitan. That ignorant arrogance will be your demise.

This

This is why Q never bothered DS9 after his one episode there. I mean he might as well have gone up to Picard and said "Humans are brutish thugs unfit to exist, prove me wrong!" And Picard fell for that shit EVERY FUCKING TIME. Sisko punching him was basically the equivalent of going "Here's your (You)". Fuck even Janeway wised up to it after a meeting or two. But Jean Luc kept getting successfully baited till the end

That is honestly the biggest compliment you can give it, considering it is a love letter to the kind of anime that are toonami-core, in much the same way that Panty and Stocking was, and in the way that TTGL was a love letter to Super Robot stuff.

References, comedy, lightheartedness, genre savvy.
