Hey, /tg/, what is the best system for recreating the world of Sword Art Online? Thanks in advance.
>>
>>44308634
FATAL, because it's appropriately shit-tier.
>>
>>44308634
To be clear, I am referring to the game world of SAO, not the anime world the game takes place in.

Gonna agree with >>44308733, FATAL is your best bet.

That's just a standard fantasy world, right? Pick any system you desire and have your characters break the 4th wall: voilĂ .
>>
Unironically and for real: D&D 4e.
>>
>>44308812
Not exactly. SAO has no magic, but sword skills that imitate magical spells. There are also no classes, and only two stats, Strength and Agility.
>>
>>44308874
First off, you are now describing meta factors that have nothing to do with the world of the game, and everything to do with the world of the series in which the game exists.
Second, I'm gonna point something out that makes SAO a very poorly designed game.
>and only two stats, Strength and Agility
And only Strength is actually WORTH putting points in.
>>
>>44308874
kek, that sounds terrible
>>
>>44308917

Nah, you need agility for thrusting.

Strength is for GLOPPING.
>>
Why not pick a better MMO fantasy thing? Such as Log Horizon or Natsunokumo.

The best one for PnP gaming would be Tower of God IMO. It allows for an insanely diverse set of skills and characters, consistent motivation and DM challenges, and turns the whole 'MMO' thing on its head slightly by having the 'players' who come into the fantasy world simply be from other worlds without defining them as our world and via a computer game.
>>
>>44308634
does it matter? the DMPC is going to be the center of attention.
>>
>>44309046
Not OP but Tower of God sounds like its worth a read. You happen to have the system or should I hunt around?

I haven't read very much of Overlord (has a lot come out?) but it seemed like terrible wish fulfillment in the vein of RE: Monster to me.

I would say Natsunokumo is the strongest actual MMO fantasy thing I've read but it's not anime material.

>>44309095
It's not a game, but a Korean webtoon. I'd recommended it but only with a guarded rec because the art is kind of sketchy and while the plot/characters were compelling at first it's kind of gone haywire since then. However the setting has potential for miles.

And ranged weapons!

I personally believe that the game creator made it swords only becausehe's eternally salty from having his girlfriend stolen away by the archery club leader.
>>
D&D with everyone using the Tome of Battle. You could probably adapt it to 5e with ease if you want to avoid 3e cancer.

What really sells it though is how you structure the encounters. An even mix of MMO-style dungeoning against bosses with weird attacks and much more dangerous PVP scenarios against "players" with the same kinds of skills as the party.

You might want to include some kind of hit point regeneration mechanic, since SAO players regain hit points continuously, even in combat. I think Fast Healing X, where X is 5% of your maximum hit points, would work just fine. Remove hit dice if you're playing with 5E, since you won't have to worry about that kind of stuff. You'd also have to set it up so that 0 hit points is death, like in AD&D.

Anybody who thinks Overlord is wish fulfilment is completely missing the point.

You aren't supposed to self-insert as Ainz unless you have a serious case of self-loathing, because Ainz is a terribly flawed character with few redeeming features aside from his ability to blow shit up really well. He is intended to be about 60% comedy, 40% fucking tragic.

Not even, bro.

Overlord is pretty generic as these things go, the setting is nothing special, and it leans heavily on MMO/TTRPG cliches to remain interesting. Often, it fails at even that and turns into a boring slog.

I like Overlord, but from an objective standpoint it's pretty mediocre. Doesn't mean people should be free to criticise it for being something that it isn't.
>>
>>44311871
The players can still do a whole lot, and the no magic/no class thing was the whole point of the game because players were supposed to be equal in the death game.

Anon, you're misleading them. As someone who's ACTUALLY READ THE LN, there's much more than that.

The characters all have separate skills which occasionally branch off to others. These include combat ones like One-Handed Sword, utility ones like Sneaking, and even ones like Cooking or Forging. An example of the skill branching is how maxing out your One Handed Sword Mastery leads to things like Curved Sword Mastery which leads to Katana Mastery. These skills are levelled through nothing but use and players can have about 10 at most. Players typically have to fill at least half with combat skills.

The combat ones are about unlocking special attacks. Technically anyone can dual-wield, just not use the special snowflake protagonist dual wield weapon skills. It's said that most people who use one-handed weapons do so to equip a shield too & thus our protagonists are a bunch of extremely special snowflakes.

Unfortunately, the faggot of a game developer decided to make the game very special attack based & an enemy who can easily be killed with a special attack may take multiple hits otherwise. This means that he & our girly boy protagonist are again, special snowflakes. Typical of an MMO protagonist.

>and only two stats, Strength and Agility.
I remember the armor & all having defensive stats. I don't think that's right.

Overall, there are set rules in the actual LN. It's just some are still jumbled, not explained fully & shit. I advise using something else that's more adequately explained.

If you really wanna use SAO or a similar setting where the players are trapped in a VRMMO then you should add an extra system element that represents a player's ability to exploit the game, i.e. clipping through the floor to PK high level players unseen, luring raid bosses out of dungeons and into low-level player cities, blocking entrances to important buildings in towns where PK is disabled, etc.

It's something that everybody does when they actually play an MMO but all these LNs ignore it despite having "evil" guilds that kill players and the like.
>>
>>44314842
Basically imagine how fun it would be to relentlessly troll Kirito by hitting him with paralysis darts from under a dungeon floor while he was trying to solo a raid boss.

>>
>>44308634
Take the setting and a sword and board heavy RPG and just add the fluff and crunch necessary to make it be like it.

For the love of all that is holy don't copy any of the mechanics of SAO. They were just incredibly retarded and not at all well thought out.
>>

It was enjoyable. I hated that bitch so much though. Clingy girls scare me.
>>
>>44314842
>but all these LNs ignore it despite having "evil" guilds that kill players and the like.

Actually the SAO Progressive novels really focus on that issue (as a running arcs) where the PKers are trying to set up players to kill each other.

Yeah but as far as I know there wasn't anything like guys abusing the limits of the simulation to break the game.

No one was having one guy walk into a wall for three straight days while two other dudes poured sand on the ground nearby to bug out the game so he could clip through the wall and enter a guilds base to PK the leader.

Dudes doing real esoteric shit to do impossible stuff would have been a cool thing to have in a I'm trapped in a video game show.

>>
>>44308634

D&D 4th Edition, only remove all rules mentioning building/non-entity damage to simulate the fact the world is just a giant lifeless mesh that cannot be physically damaged by the characters' attacks.
>>
>>44308634
>TTRPG emulating an anime emulating an MMORPG
Why? I would say you should just play an MMO on an rp server, but SAO doesn't even emulate the nature of MMO games very well and ends up being a mcguffiny mary-sue mess. It essentially fails on all fronts, and therefore should fit well into a freeform game.
>>
>>44317699

Not even 4th ed. is gutted enough to properly simulate the barebones nature of SAO. Seriously, what kind of a tool would give their life to live in a world with such shit mechanics?

Kazzak from Vanilla wow comes to mind.

>>
>>44310093
Oh I'm sorry. You made us learn a entire combat system and we never get to use it past level 3 because all encounters have become social encounters.
>>

They had to shrink him to get him through the gate, I believe.
>>
>>44322795
This but unironically and as a complete positive. Having a combat system means violence is always an option, which is good. Never using the combat system means conflict was always resolved in more interesting ways, which is fantastic.
>>
>>44322874
Or it's just sessions of talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking talking and the low CHA barbarian is just sitting idle playing on his phone because he dumped charisma and would get heavily penalized for all his social encounters no matter what he says.
>>
>>44308634
Which part are you trying to recreate in particular? The unsound game mechanics, the shitty story structure/pacing, or the soulless characters?
>>
>>44317666
Both the two 2nd and 3rd floor Progressive stories deal with the PKers trying to exploit the system to either get people to kill each other or kill people without getting flagged by the system. I'm sure there is more in the 4th/5th floor ones since that is running arc in the stories.
>>
>>44323312
Ah good. Would it be better to have griefing shenanigans covered under a normal skill system or add a specific mechanic. I'm afraid just making a mechanic for it would be too stifling for player creativity.

Also since the system stimulates the brain to induce pain, pleasure, hunger, and the like did anyone ever try and trick the system into inflicting pain when someone wasn't injured. Like visual stimuli that the game interprets as "your character is now on fire."

In one MMO of yore, there were slimes.
These slimes, when hit for any amount of damage, would split into two slimes, each with half the health of the original slime.
If not killed, these slimes would slowly regenerate health, until they were the same health as a fully healed slime.
One player, let's call him "gooey" discovered he could trap a slime in his house.
Gooey also discovered that, if he built a PC correctly, a normally big, nasty AoE doom spell would only do 1 point of damage.
And Gooey could always cast that spell in his own house.
So, gooey trapped a slime, and hit it with the 1 damage spell over, and over, and over.
Each time he did that, the slimes would double in number.
When there were no more spaces in the house to stand, the slime units "stacked" with multiple slimes in each space.
Gooey kept casting the spell until every space in his home was 128 slimes deep.
And then, he opened the door to his house.
And the server crashed.
Hard.
People lost everything they had done that day. They rioted in the forums, demanding to know who was responsible.
Gooey E-mailed the dev team, and let them know exactly what had happened, and suggested a few ways to fix the problem.
The Devs banned him.
Word of advice: banning a exploiter who tells you how to do a thing very precisely? Not a good idea.
Gooey came back with an alt account, and did it again. This time, he did not step forward and tell the Devs how it happened. Instead, he told the forums
Within minutes of the servers being restored, they crashed again, as the first of many imitators got involved in the slime trick.
The constant server crashes forced the dev team to take action.
And within a few days, they fixed the problem.

desu the quality of the art is pretty much inversely proportional to the quality of the story. The art started out pretty sketchy while the story was great, but recently the art has gotten pretty damn good while the story has started going all over the place.
