The marshes of the kingdom were cursed a long time ago - in the wilder areas, the curse still lies strong. At the edges of villages, eerie ghostlights and twisting serpents of eldritch flame dance and waver enticingly, luring the young ones further into the swamps and fens. to be dragged into the depths by river hags and worse creatures.
The cadavers of people who disappeared into the wilderness return as shambling, rotten things, infested with plants and mushrooms and animated by unholy power. Huge leeches hunt in the pools and lakes, and the logs that float in the waters occasionally lunge forth with a creaking, hissing roar to drag an unwary traveller to their death in their ragged, splintery jaws.
On certain nights, great clumps of plant matter form into humanoid shapes and march-stagger from the wetlands, accompanied by twisted masses of carnivorous plants that can swallow a man whole, engulf him in strangling roots and vines, or tear him apart with jaw-like leaves, and trees that slowly
creep forwards on their roots like giant spiders, crushing everything in their path.
At the heads of these hosts ride the Hollykings with their red-berry eyes and stag-skull helms, seated atop intricate constructions of roots resembling serpentine horses. Sometimes, these mysterious beings will grant boons to people they encounter - at others, they will throw them to their eerie host to be torn apart.
