Why is that a bad thing?

There aren't many of those these days. Everybody tends to be about shades of grey so you rarely see a character that's supposed to be evil enough to have a redemption.

Redemption is trash in most stories because of its nature in real life and historical literature as an exploration of an individual's struggles with their personal code and adherent obligations or atonement for failures in the pursuit of their code and obligations. A sadistic serial killer suddenly becoming Gandhi is just a bastardisation of redemption, particularly if it doesn't explore his evolution and the agonies that give meaning and sincerity to any genuine redemption or atonement. This isn't attainable in most stories, especially so in fantasy or sci-fi, for the simple reason that the story must be framed so personally and emotionally around the protagonist that it can't do anything on the grander scales and explorations common to sci-fi/fantasy. What kind of DM (or any commercial writer) is possibly willing to dedicate an entire campaign or novel to the dramas and angsts against the struggles of their quests for such characters as Ulysses or Quixano, and how can they possibly frame it in such a way (not that this should ever be a focus for any sane DM) so as to not appear derivative or trite if it's not focused on an individual in a modern setting? It's better to just ignore redemption entirely if you're trying to engage players beyond simply having fun in a game.

Fuck you Timmy, I don't want to have the BBEG be actually a good guy despite all the definitely evil shit he did for the 10th time.

Redemption doesn't make any sense to me outside of religious contexts. Like, I did something, and then I do something else, and I've "made up" for the first somehow? How does that work? It's not like anything I've done has changed just because I've done something else too.

You can't know that the dragon in the cage is not an illusion cast on the princess and the dragon is the paladin.
