Reveal to me the Secret of Yellow. In preparation for my FW Imperial Fist shoulders, heads, and torsos I grabbed one of my ancient snap-fit marines and tried to paint it as an IF.

The yellow came out super-splotchy despite me basing it with Averland Sunset.
>>
>>44267822

I hear a lot of good things about priming in yellow.
>>
>>44267822
Bell of Lost Souls posted a very nice Heresy IF tutorial a few weeks ago.
Perhaps give it a go?

It looks easy enough to follow, and the yellow looks really nice and bright.
>>

>>
Ok so I decided to paint the boots black and I tried dry brushing the fur with some white. It looks "OK"
The sword and shield are based in black. I'd probably do a a brown coat on the wood then a standard wash. Then dry brush the metal parts with the metallic silver. Plus the sword.

I'm going to try to paint the gloves a reddish color. Then the cape a deep red maybe.

>>
>>44268826
Lol the base is a mix of paints and wash out black. I did paint it sort of but with a very light black that had a bit to much water. i'll probably go over it once the other parts are done.

It does look pretty interesting though. Thanks :)
I'm doing my best. Sadly I came down with a cold recently so my progress has been stunted.

When i've based in black then I do two coats of Averland and about three coats of yriel with some drybrushing over the top at the end to blend it together. Do thin layers and build up the colour slowly.

For the knight I used a light grey spray primer so I skipped the averland step. It's not perfect but I'm gonna weather him up lots so it doesnt need to be.

Started on the red bits now...

The top one, the flamer implies he's at the front line getting shot trying to use a flamer, which is not what a commander should be doing.

>>

Nice kans.

The little bastards can be really effective with their grotzookas, but you have to actually get them up the field first. My deff dreads and kans almost never make it to combat, and I actually have a close combat dread that my friends and I call "the ork statue" due to the fact that he's been immobilized every single game I've fielded him in.

I am sure there must be some sort of difference, but it is the second one (ColorMaster) that I have purchased and used on my Thousand Sons. I would guess that the first one would bond "better" than the second (re: probably just as well for painting purposes, but probably hard to remove with Simple Green, etc).
Personally, I would probably have grabbed whatever was the cheapest at the local hardware store/walmart. I find proper Spray Paint procedures are what give you the best results. That is, shaking the can VERY well for at the very least 60 seconds, spray in low humidity, low wind conditions, and ideal temp (5-20 degrees C), and shaking often between your short sweeping bursts of spray paint about 12-15" away from the model(s).
>>
So i'm starting to get into airbrushing and was wondering what I should get for a compressor. I want one of the quiet ones but dont know where to start looking. Any ideas?
>>
>>44274349
I have been long wondering what I wanted to do about their lower halves as these guys are a composition of various bits I ordered from Bitz Barn a couple years ago. The legs are from loyal terminators so I had to remove loyal icons, but the legs just looks so bland.
I have decided to give them a "robe of a Thousand Scrolls." That is, I will Green Stuff many, many hanging scrolls in the style of my Sorcerer Lord that used the dark apostle as the base model. Just, a thick layering of hanging scrolls that emulate a robe around the waist of my Sorcerers of Obliteration.
I then have a bunch of bits from my Chariots of Tzeentch I will add.
>>
>>44274146
Nice old boltpistol, but the laspistol would probably be best.

There are bound to be stores that specialise in airbrushing in your area. Probably not for miniatures (they're usually into auto-detailing and helmets and such things), but they'll happily provide advice on airbrushing and what compressors are good for your purpose.
Who knows, they may even offer courses.

One other thing to remember, quiet compressors, especially Oil Compressors (which are almost whisper quiet), are a fair bit more expensive than normal ones.

I own an oil compressor (a Eurotech A20 to be precise), and you could get about 3 normal compressors for the price of this thing.
But it's so nice and quiet, that it's worth it in my opinion. The sound is comparable to a refrigerator motor.

Ulix's box isn't too awful from an assembly perspective, especially compared to the hell that is plastic Bayou gremlins:

-Ulix is 7 pieces, and the only thing to watch out for is making sure the bowstring lines up.
-Wild boars are about 3-4 pieces each, and the pieces are cut so that the joins are hidden by the fur texture for the most part.
-Penelope is 3 pieces.
-Old Major is probably the worst: he's only 6 relatively large pieces, but his head's split in two so filling/smoothing out the join going down his neck is hell.

That's normal for smaller minis. But in that case it's simply bad unless you don't plan on drybrushing the metal skeleton afterwards.

I mean I don't know, but looking at the sideview of that Knight in >>44277748 I can't begin to understand where he is at in the painting process. There are parts with decals already on them, parts with what looks like micro pen shading, just basecoated parts like the plate under the head and then, half basecoated parts where the red shines through the metallic paint completely unpainted bits.

And it's not like it's a big secret on how to paint Knights. The goddamn Emperor of paint, the Duncan himself has made an hour long tutorial.

I don't know what pdf you're talking about, but if you've got regular-ass RTV silicone caulk and are trying to use it to make a mould, just use a drop or two of regular acrylic paint.

Hardens the silicone as well as anything else, plus you can easily see when it's mixed in, because it's fucking paint.

You should have some on hand if you paint minis.

Great to spend time on terrain anon, how it gets so neglected is beyond me. When you look at a game going on you primarily see the table after all. Are low visibility zones still a thing in 3e? I'd have a serious look at aquarium/terrarium decorations or plants.
If you have a look at some of the tree decorations you can buy for those you'll find that the look would be pretty easy to replicate with the plastic deco plants you can buy pretty cheaply when you glue them to a branch or something to make the trunk.
You can also get some pretty funky colors and plants for coral reefs and stuff like that if you want something more alien for Infinity.
I don't know much about Malifaux, but I think Bonsai (pretty popular in that area)would fit well to Infinity due to the anime influence, but stuff like that wouldn't be about of place there either since they have some eastern factions as well iirc.

While 1/48 is closer to the average 28mm scale, it looks to small compared to the rather bulky heroic scaled warhammer minis. Especially orks.

I made you a pic so you can compare the size with a cadian soldier. The guy next to him is an 1/48 german crew member. Those halftracks weren't that big in RL.
1/35 would be huge compared a warhammer miniature. It could work as some kind of out-of-scale orky vehicle though.

>>44282443
He has a little button on the front of his cape.
It's not much but I wanted it to stand out.

This is the first mini I've done a proper layering process with. This mini seemed fairly difficult there's a lot of close corners.

I have some minis from mantic. Ork, skeletons ghouls and zombies.

I'm intimidated by their construction and I think I need superglue.

I'll do that with the base. Should I use white on the sword for an edge? I've never painted a sword and wanted to keep it simple. Should I just do grey?

Thanks for the advice.
>>
After using the Plate Mail primer from Army painter on my Necrons should I wash the recess now and then do their armour and detail or wash after everything is completed?

Any good guids too power weapons? Like the swords and scythes they use I want to be of blue or green energy.

Should I do a slight OSL effect on the gauss weapons with their translucent green tubs?

Some of these models have very slight recesses and I think they would look much cooler filled in with green then the usual black or brown wash i use.

Is there a good way to do that or do I need to find a brush composed of a single strand of nose hair.

>>
>>44282529
I have Tamiya stuff, But I'm planning on stopping my use of that.

So for army painter all I have is their metallic plate mail color.
The metallic color is merely dry brushed on there.
>>
>>44282503
As a person with two WW2 armies packed with all manner of half-tracks, sure. But they're bit of an obsolete technology post-WW2.
>>
>>44282411
>I was trying to get a dark red

You got pink. Be a bit more restricitve about where you slap on oyur highlights. And follow the flow of the fabric better, in many cases here the few dark btis left don't follow the valleys, they're just thrown out as a few splotches here and there in the alleys.
>>
>>44282563
So the first coat I did was a wine colored purple.
I had mixed black red and white.
It came out pretty good.

I then tried to shade the cape. This didn't work to well.

After that I tried painting it red. But I ended up thinning the paint to much with merely two drops of water.

So it came out fairly splotchy.

It looked alright so I decided to try to drybrush on some pink.

I considered going over it with solid read again, but i was worried it would cake on to much paint.

I don't really have a proper dry brushing brush. I need to get one. The brushes I do use thin and not flat. So my results aren't that great.

It's all coming from my own inexperience.

My next step though it to build the mantic minis

A rigid drybrush will also splatter paint all over your room. Sable drybrushes are much better because they are soft and follow the shapes of the model better while not catapulting pigment onto your ceiling.
>>
>>44282675
>40k tank techology

Design, not technology. Even a lowly Russ has auto-loaders, engines that run on any combustible liquid, laser targeting systems, high-energy generators, warning systems, etc.

Reason for half-tracks was that early tanks weren't so good at turning in motion (it was more of a stop, turn, go system), so the front wheels do the turning while the tracks provide the traction. Past that we've managed to make tanks with far more advanced systems to turn them, thus negating the need for half-tracks.
>>
>>44282918
How much paint you use when drybrushing?
>>
>>44282619
>It looked alright so I decided to try to drybrush on some pink.

Drybrushign works very poorly on smooth curves and surfaces, like flowing cloth.

It works better on highly textured surfaces (fur, mail, etc).
>>
>>44282932
>Reason for half-tracks was that early tanks weren't so good at turning in motion

Reason for them actually was to allow the infantry to keep up with the tanks in difficult terrain where regular trucks couldn't drive.

Because if we are talking about 'applying paint' or as the kids call it 'painting' instead of using minimal pigment on the bristles of a stiff brush to easily highlight edges, raised parts, ridges and such, then yes, you want brushes that follow the shape of the model.

Drybrushing, the exact same technique we've been using for 30 years now. There's a guide somewhere in the OP I think.
>>
>>44282918
If your paint is splattering all over the place then you have a) to much of it on your brush and b) its not fucking dry!

I'm talking about the technology. Half-tracks existed way before the SdKfz 250 and M3 transports and the need for motorized infantry transports. And the reason for the design was that it enabled simple and nimble design that offered the mobility of a wheeled vehicle with the off-road capabilities of a tracked vehicle. Once tracked vehicles were able to operate more nimbly, they replaced the half-tracks.

Well then enjoy your shitty ass brushes and your pigment flying everywhere I guess.

>>44283141
I never encountered that problem and i have no problem with my drybrushing brush being anything but a shitty ass brush for $1.

Congratulations on defying physics I suppose, have a nice day.

Congratulations on drybrushing wrong, have a nice day, m'lady.

Try to imagine a miniature and their gear as real functional stuff. Look for areas that might get reasonable wear and tear, mainly edges and exposed areas and start weathering lightly and progressively til you are satisfied with it, depending on how "gritty" you want them to be.

You could start with just some light flaking of the armor on exposed areas and work it up to large areas of base metal showing after some serious combat. Also, add bullet scars, oil smears in the joints, char, and blood or smoke on plates work for a grittier combat look.

You can try going for a deep red ink wash instead of painting over the pink. It'll be thin enough to not clog up the detail and correct the colour somewhat so you can add highlights again

Keep in mind too little highlighting can be worked up, but too much highlighting looks fake as fuck and is a bitch to cover up.

To add to this I am using Warplock Bronze (a dark brown metallic) for their armor and weaponry. Drybrushing the armor and vehicles with Hasnut Copper.

I am leaning towards the Agrax Earthshade brown wash to dull the bright steel and give them a worn/rusted look almost.

Agrax should work fine, it will give them a slightly brown tint (over the platemail), but if you want them to look dusty and worn that can certainly do the job.

It's what happens when you spend a lot of time outside.

Whats a good way to highlight red. All I have are the basic colors, so if I do mix red and white I usually get pink. Unless adding more red helps?

I will defiantly do that though. I only have paint and no actual red wash. So I'll think my paint down a ton.

Don't go add white straight away for highlights on red, pink is the inevitable outcome. A bit of orange then yellow on the very edges does the trick better.

Check this out, it might help

Space Marines aren't pretty
>>
>>44284005
I'll try with orange and purple, but I do not own any variations of red like that. So I'm stuck to mixing paint.
>>
>>44284027
This guy's red is awesome too. Try practicing a new technique on a flat surface first, then on textured objects before going for the mini. Time and paint spent practicing are never wasted.

It is worth pointing out that the portraits posted are from Space Hulk, so they are BA veterans. At the same time you got characters like Tycho who went nuts because an Ork bbq'd his face.

So while yes, Marines are not pretty, by default and their years of service don't make them prettier either, it stands to reason that being 'pretty' is more important to them than other Chapters, considering all the recruits start out as radiated Mutants on Baal and undergo a symbolic transformation in a coffin into the angelic space marines during their Initiation.

Interesting topic in this specific case actually.
>>
>>44284409
Yeah - in their case, their beauty would be as much a part of what made them a marine as their strength and new organs. The Blood Angels have always been kind of artistic anyway.

You might be able to argue something similar with the Ultramarines. They like to be great speechmakers and leaders as much as warriors, and thousands of scars aren't necessarily a great trade-off for them.
