How well do your animals treat your players?
Usually not well seems to be the general consensus I gather from the many years I think that animals don't generally like player characters, usually fighting to the death when spooked or when they feel their territory has been invaded.

Character 2: has a cat which he got from an npc who died, and has followed him halfway across the continent.

I have a horse that pulls the cart full of stuff. I make a point of feeding him cheese because I like cheese. We are very good about not getting him into combat because I keep loosing his stat block. We once left him in the woods for 4 days guarding our treasure hoard while we liberated a nearby city. In reality, bandits couldn't get the magical chest opened and didn't want to steal a misbehaving horse.

Short story time.
I was running a campaign where the PC's were on a sub tropical island trying to resolve a conflict between an indigenous society and a colonial settlement from a feudal nation. The PC's had just rescued the indigenous princesses (twins) from the bad guys (who were alligned with a third party that had stirred up the conflict in the first place) and had some downtime while an NPC medic was treating the princesses for injuries (the party could never find someone to play a cleric long term). The PC's also had to decide if they were going to bring the princesses home or collect a hefty bounty from the colonials for them.
They said, "we want to go hunting." And I had never really thought about how to do a fun hunting encounter so I tried to come up with something on the fly.
The PC's started from their boat on the beach (it was a pirate ship they had taken over by besting its previous captain during another quest, they kept a modest crew of NPC pirates to man it).

They wound up winning the ensuing encounter. At the end though they had a woundedvelociraptorand were about to finish it off when one of the players asked how intelligent it was. It turns out these things have an int of 6. 4 is supposed to be the limit for animal intelligence. They decided that it was unethical to kill something that was basically sentient. This didn't stop them from bringing back the dead ones and cooking them though.

They bring back the survior too. And the alchemist after leveling up wanted use an awaken animal ability to give him speech. There was no mechanical rule preventing this so I allowed it. The party wound up giving him to a cleric NPC later. The cleric was a former player who had quit but was kept alive because the players liked him. His deity had been himself, using the optional fluff for that (theres some rule for PF clerics where they technically can be clerics of anything). Eventually the PC's lost interest but the canonical ending to the story is that the velociraptor became this guys first disciple.
