Made some changes/fixes with advice from the IRC.
So, how does one get in on this sorta thing? Are there certain 'prime' hours for the rp channels? Do you have to have a backstory sheet? Are there GM's and ongoing games? Pick up groups?
>>44207163
I logged into the IRC for the first time yesterday, but things seemed very lively so I'd say night is a good time. I'm pretty sure there are some ongoing campaigns, and you can also play it irl if your friends are into megucas.
>>44207163
Create your character sheet and drop by #MGCYOA at Rizon. The player pool is relatively big and covers most time zones, though the majority of action usually happens during European evenings/American afternoons-evenings.
Backstory sheet is not necessary, but you'll have to play a character one way or another, so having a backstory and character profile ready is a bonus -- unless you're playing a total amnesiac / recently transformed human...
There are GMs who handle both long campaigns and short quests, but things still happen even if they aren't active (or play their characters) as the setting still stays persistent. All channels follow one continuity so players who drop to RP/set events in the pub exist in the same timeline as people who RP 'outside' in the Overcity or other locales. The exception are 'timelocked' events when players decide to stretch the RP session over several days whereupon finishing it they decide 'when' the event happened relative to ongoing continuity. GMs gather groups either through random encounters/NPCs in character or by directly scheduling things with players.
You can check >>44201449 for RP and quest examples.
Hello, future participants! It's time to play, "Stat the Hottie!" a fun little thread game where you stat the girl in the picture the closest you can be!
All participants are welcome, whether they know about the character's context or not!
In this episode, we'll be stating this lovely young lady!

>>44201209
Question for clarification.
In Specialization, if I spend a Silver it says "Pick ANY from the same COLUMN, or your SPECIALIZATION becomes CORRUPTED." I'm not sure how that's supposed to read.
Does it mean:
A: I can choose outside the column at the cost of my Specialization becoming Corrupted
OR
B: I can EITHER choose any from the same column OR choose to have my Specialization Corrupted?
>>44212470
I'm almost certain that it's B.
>>44212470
It's B.
If you choose another in your column (one silver), then go corrupt (another silver), it'd be net 2 silvers

I wish I could waste more time in Neps, but I don't have the games or the computer for it anymore. How sad.
So could a Magical Girl with the Metal Specialization theoretically make magical cybernetic limbs for any crippled teammates? Because that seems incredibly useful in a Guns and Grim game.

I guess it came out as an irrepressible pair of magical girls who aren't exactly tough on their own, but fight as an agile ranged tag team. They maintain distance, peppering with fire and prefer to work with others. Go after one and the other will be allowed to set up for a lethal attack, while their third eyes allow them to predict incoming assaults and react accordingly. Lastly overcity shift seems fun for choosing where you fight for an environmental advantage or for ambushes, and even seems like a decent backup escape plan.
>>44248661
First thoughts would be that Familiars and Third Eye seem much more useful now. The expanded descriptions overall are also helpful for clarifying just what each power was supposed to do.
I also like the limitation on Killing Blow. Being able to take a MAG bonus one a melee KB seemed rather weird.
>>44248661
What changed for the out of costume perks?
Thanks for working on this, can't wait to see what you decide to do with patrons and puuchus!
We'd love to see you in the IRC sometime.
>>44248661
The specifics seem like good additions. Don't carry toxic waste in hammerspace, bears are cool familiars and will become stuffed animals.
Well worded too. The specifications around Tentacles power seem particularly informative, letting player's avoid the pain of those tentacles being ripped apart.

Out of costume perks? I think in the perks front all that changed for OoC stuff was Martial Training and A Way Out getting OoC stat boosts. Do you mean the Powers?
Powers got greatly expanded, and while I left the obviously magical attack and big effect powers to only applying in transformed states, half of them now work out of costume. Third Eye, Power of Friendship, and Familiar are not dependent on your transformation at all while Regeneration and Hammerspace function at reduced effect in your normal form.

Rolled up a character with friends, and then min maxed magic up to 20. I have Gravity specialization and the Third Eye power. Anyone want to take a stab at what each of the power levels for Gravity looks like? The fire sample in the pdf helped me with most of the basic elemental ones, but I don't know exactly how I'd differentiate power levels with Gravity.
Also other specializations would be cool too, if Gravity isn't your thing. I'm just personally interested and I feel like I have a cool personality to throw behind the stats I've got.

I think so. Monster girls don't have to be 50% monster.
>>44335275
Is there a place in the Overcity that weary megucas with A Way Out go to die?
>>44343771
Well, the Overcity's a big place. If such a graveyard had to exist, it would probably be there.
So, regarding the Patron Module. Currently I have 6 choices of Patron.
The Puchuu – your default little fluffy ball of smug. Has connections to other girls and Puchuu to get you information and reinforcements. He doesn't give a shit about you personally, just his mission. Also, don't ask about his mission.
Spirit – Any of thousands of spirits associated with different concepts, places or things. Absolutely alien points of view, have only limited understanding of humanity but are very in tune with their purviews. Can guide you to be more skilled in your spec.
Deity – Any of hundreds of gods or goddesses. Want you to spread their influence, don't have a lot of choice in champions these days. Make you all around better and more skilled. Expect you to worship them and preach their name.
Horror – horrible outsiders and creatures from beyond that want into our reality or planet. Their motivations are all over the board, but are largely hostile. Often in competition with each other as well as other magical girls. Will warp your mind and/or body. Blackest of hats.
The Beacon – White Spark faction. Beings who want humanity to be the best it can be, nuturing the spark within their charges to be a beacon of hope. Very white hat.
The Ebon Mint – Black Coin faction. Don't care about you working for other factions. Will offer you a 'get power' coin with many strings attached. You will owe them favors, and in general taking their offer means you fall deeper and deeper into debt as you take favors until you only nominally work for your other faction.
I think this covers all the bases – is there any archetype I'm missing?
>>44345050
Can I get a dragon patron?
>>44345050
I think that limits Puchuu too much, I would be interested in White coin esque Puchuu really
Also would a generic ayylmao that isn't an asshole be counted as a Spirit?
>>44345050
Guessing you can take more than one patron, within reason?
>>44345460
Take Spirit. Spirit would cover the non-human alien thought processes and elemental affinities of a dragon. Or take Horror if you want a fleshwarping eldritch abomination dragon like Iron Kingdoms has.
>>44345544
One of the optional perks for Puchuu makes them non-assholes. Beacon fluff also makes it clear that they resemble Puchuu, and it's unclear whether they ape them because they are Puchuu or because they're just taking advantage of the same 'small, fluffy and nonthreatening' appearance.
Non-asshole aliens would probably fall under Spirit.
>>44345640
You get one patron, but one of the Ebon Mint's default Perks is that you can have another patron. So really it's one patron or take a Black Coin and work for the Mint + another patron.
>>44345833
Official stamp on thread now that I've forgotten my name again.
>>44345833
Nice dubs.
Spirit sounds extremely versatile. However, it might be confusing for newer players if a living patron comes under a category called 'Spirit'.
>>44346264
It's not for players, this is a CYOA aka writing prompt. If you're confused you're retarded, since it allows for near infinite freedom.
>>44346398
>It's not for players
Then why does it have stats and rules for playing?
>>44346560
Are you reading the same CYOA as I am?
Stats are the milestones to write your characters with.
All the rules are just derivative shit for people trying to make the CYOA into something its not.
>>44346624
>>44346398
So tell me, what tragic condition do you have that makes you hate fun?
>>44346398
>>44346560
It is both. The CYOA is the core of what's going on - it's mostly a writing prompt/self-GM'd thought excercise, with some generic stats to give an idea of how strong/tough/magical you can get. Some folks use the CYOA to freeform roleplay via IRC.
Then there's AMG Core and the other actual play systems which have grown from the CYOA. Patrons will probably trickle down to AMG Core eventually.
>>44346790
>a reasonable middle ground that accepts both sides
Blasphemy.
>>44346752
I don't hate fun, I hate when people are hypocritical and criticize something on a basis that isn't even relevant.
>>44346790
The author of AMG Core seems to have a hate boner for you, the patron module, and the coins, so I doubt we'll see any of the actually good content make it in.
>>44345050
A true neutral patron who only wants a magical girl because of some sort of quota, or because they just need a new assistant\servant\maid.
Maybe they were Puuchus who gave up on the mission, maybe they're a forgotten Deity who just needs a single follower to stay alive and they picked you, maybe they just want another immortal companion and since you offed the last one they decided to make do.
Either way it gives a magical girl or even monster girl true freedom to do whatever she wants both good and evil, and makes an amusing Slice of Life CYOA possible.
It also would be the best patron for 'Oddball' magical girls.
Plus it lets you bring back someone like Eythor the Stoner who gives you missions such as going to the store for Cheeto's because it's game night.
>>44346929
>The author of AMG Core seems to have a hate boner for you, the patron module, and the coins, so I doubt we'll see any of the actually good content make it in.
The authors of AMGcore have no such hard feelings that they've made public. AMGCore is intended as an alternate system for those that want more mechanical games as opposed to the freeform roleplay that the core CYOA encourages.
Stop trying to start shit unless you've got some proof to back up your claim.
>>44346929
Go away. You're not funny.
>>44346929
>The author of AMG Core seems to have a hate boner for you, the patron module, and the coins, so I doubt we'll see any of the actually good content make it in.
I never got that impression. The authors of the actual rulesets have a much more difficult time achieving balance than I do, as they have to make actual mechanics and have actual players testing the validity of their rulesets. As such their sets update more incrementally than I do, and if I make sweeping changes in the core CYOA they may not choose to reflect those changes in their rulesets so as to avoid upsetting what balance they have managed to achieve. Occasionally I imagine my changes frustrate them. That's still not a hateboner.
>>44346939
Keep in mind some of the perks and drawbacks you can take will change the nature of your patron. You can take Trickster if your patron is a deity, and your patron is no longer interested in spreading his name, he's in it for entertainment. You can take Caring if your patron is a Puchuu and he will actually care about your well-being instead of being a smug asshole.
Spirit is currently kind of the catch-all category, so maybe I should rename it.
>>44347344
>Occasionally I imagine my changes frustrate them.
Accurate. The change from 1.3 to 1.4 didn't do anything to hurt the progress I'd made, but I expect the Patron doc will probably do some things.
Since the system I'm trying to work on is meant to go hand-in-hand with the core doc you put out, it can be frustrating.
>>44347494
The Patron module is mostly soft changes - the only stat bumps I'm trying to include are from monstrous transformations & DMG options, whereas most of the Patron benefits can be represented as winning tie rolls, getting an XP discount on a few things, getting a free skill, Giving the GM an option to pull your fat out of the fire or hand you info or things of that nature.
Most of it shouldn't be as overtly mechanical as the core CYOA, though monster girls are the wrench in the works.
>>44347671
I think I've solved the monster girl issue mechanically. At this point I think it's just going to be balance shifts and minor changes.
Patron not giving stat changes will throw a wrench in some people's builds, as I can think of at least 3 characters that depend on that +1 that the perk gave to round out builds. Should be offset by the benefits that patrons give, though.
One important thing that needs to happen, however, is for a meguca to be allowed to go patron-less and be a solitary force without losing out on anything. An issue with the black/white coins that caused a lot of balance concerns was the old fatal question: "Why the hell would I NOT take this?"
>>44347344
I'm biased due to my own story, but Spirit works well for a generic demigod type patron?
>>44347494
THANK YOU for having some integrity to actually stick to the CYOA. I look forward to seeing what you come up with unlike AMG Core and the bullshit they did to monster girls. If there has to be these rules which destroy freeform and writing, at least it will be consistent.

>Patron not giving stat changes will throw a wrench in some people's builds, as I can think of at least 3 characters that depend on that +1 that the perk gave to round out builds. Should be offset by the benefits that patrons give, though.
Hmm. Point. I'll consider a stat point perk for the general perk pool.
>>44347783
What I've done with all the Patrons (except Ebon Mint) is that they offer two perks and two drawbacks by default. You get one more perk for free. If you want more, you must take a drawback to get a perk. Various patrons allow you to take differing numbers of drawbacks. Puchuu and Beacon with the least, Horror with the most
Ebon Mint just gives you the Black Coin. You can use it at any time to gain unique bonuses like a second spec, magical weapon and that sort of thing at the cost of drawbacks AND debt to them.
>>44348152
The system I'm working on will include Legacy support for characters created in older versions while also supporting the current version. Most of that revolves around Monster Girls, but are there any standout changes made that might want some eyes on them?
Are there any drastic differences between 1.3 and 1.4 that I should keep an eye on to make sure both versions have fair support?
>>44348378
Not really. 1.3 to 1.4 just removes monster girls from the core document, and expands on what powers do. Patron is replaced by Overcity Shift, and a couple of the perks got out of costume stat boosts.
Real meat of changes will come with the Patron module.
>>44348528
Got it. Guess I'll keep an eye out. Any idea when that'll happen?
>>44348698
I was hoping to have Patron out by Christmas - I'm not sure that'll happen. I'll try to at least release a beta version by Christas, and have it all done by New Year.
>>44350003
Don't sweat it, it'll probably be better to just have the finalized version done at New Year.
>>44350003
No worries, take your time- Looking forward to it, but no sense in running for anyone's sake right? Better to have a polished product than a rush job- leave that sort of thing for game companies.
>>44350003
Speaking as somebody who's actually worked in game development, this anon >>44350233 has the exact right idea.
We're not getting paid for this shit and there's no real deadline, so as long as we're actually working hard on it to ensure it'll be good, there's no reason to rush.
>>44351434
>>44350233
>>44350153
Thanks for the support guys - I hope I didn't give the wrong impression but I'm pretty much tackling this much the same way as the initial release of 1.0 for the CYOA. I'm working on it at my own pace, but I like to be able to throw up a half-complete build to show that it's at least being worked on and there's progress. I mostly do all the text and then add in the images later rather than as I go, so it will be functional well before it's pretty.
So where do most of you guys set your characters? Fictional cities, cities based on real cities, Japanese cities, American cities, wherever? I'm kinda new to magical girl stuff and as I come up with backstory for the girls I roll up, I want to make sure I'm not doing something totally dumb.
>>44352345
All of my characters have a different world they come from, alt Earths seem to be especially popular. I have mine a little way in the future for the most part, where things are semi-autonomous and internetting would be pretty normal for a young child to do.
>>44352345
Mostly been magical hobos in Generic Vaguely American City, currently writing in a coop story that'll probably bounce between Belfast, Ireland and the Overcity.
No such thing as dumb, really. Generic Fictional City works fine.
>>44352345
I'm based in my real city, though I don't mention the name anywhere in my narrative.
>>44352345
My character is based in a setting I've been working on for a while where people try to get Magic and Mundane shit to live together. It's the only city of its kind in the world, acting as a prototype project for the whole world adopting their government format.
Because it's new, there's a lot of people both mundane and paranormal that flock there with varying degrees of both good and bad intentions. Lots of room for magical girls to both fuck shit up and get fucked.
>>44352385
>>44352397
>>44352561
>>44352656
Okay, so pretty much anywhere as long as that anywhere is mundane on the surface.
I asked a little bit about gravity earlier with the benchmarks, and I think I have some more focused questions now regarding what gravity itself can do. Obviously there's dialing gravity up or down, for big fields or specific targets. It seems implied, too, that gravity can definitely affect grace (or clumsiness, I guess), at least with the out of costume benefits. Given the description, it seems to fit the bill of an indirect magic - gravity itself isn't doing damage, it's the fact that a thing's body can't support the weight of the atmosphere above it anymore.
The way I kind of imagined things, gravity could also be used to essentially magically enhance agility or strength for certain actions. The idea of dodging things that shouldn't be dodgeable, or hitting waaaay harder than you should be able to. I'm not too interested in figuring out the nitty gritty of exactly how much you could do, but does that sound reasonable?
Also, at absurd levels of gravity: time manipulation? Not on the order of the specialization, just being able to do little things.
>>44352931
Time Manipulation is out of range of Gravity, but time distortions aren't. You can make a few seconds skip by here and there (from your perspective), but you'll likely never create any force larger than that. If you could, you'd probably pull the sun into the Earth before you actually get anywhere.
>>44352995
Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. I rolled up a character with high magic, Gravity, Third Eye power, and fists as her weapons, and my first thought was unbelievably fast and strong (and magical) monk. It's not where I ended up going with the idea, but it was a cool thought experiment, and I was curious how far I could go with it.
>>44353142
>High MAG Gravity Fist-user
Congrats, you're playing Kat from Gravity Rush.
>>44353187
It seemed like too cool an idea to have not been done, so I guess I'm not surprised to see that it has been.
Is the show worth watching? I've only watched Madoka Magica so far (as far as magical girl anime goes) and I haven't had a chance to pick up on anything else.
>>44353279
>Show
It's a game. One of the best Vita games, actually. It's getting a sequel on the PS4.
You redirect gravity to send yourself flying into the sky, then redirect it again to shoot yourself and rider kick a motherfucker from the atmosphere.
>>44353294
I am sad I don't have a Vita then. Also that sounds badass.
I ended up tooling things up to be more tactical commander-esque - still very high magic, but with Third Eye and Awareness, she's in a great position to keep an eye on everything and outplay her opponents. With a team that trusts her, her manipulation of gravity should make it pretty easy to beat anything she can predict, and with Third Eye and Awareness she can predict quite a lot.
>>44353343
If you have a PS4, the sequel will be released alongside a PS4 remake of the first game, because even Sony realizes that nobody wants to buy a fucking Vita.
>>44353399
