What's the bestmeaning your personal favoritesystem for a space game? What mechanics actually make you feel like you're in a sci-fi universe rather than just generic numbers?

Megatraveller. None of this Mongoose shit, the real old-school "you can die during char gen" version.

Eclipse Phase. Its mechanics are very universe appropriate and specific.
Eclipse Phase. Can't get more sci-fi than "your body is just replaceable (albeit expensive) equipment".
Ghost Echo, Lasers & Feelings or Carnage 3:16 depending on what sort of game I'm going for. Weird, space opera, or military scifi. All of them have simple mechanics that work well with their genre.
I had a lot of fun with Diaspora. The whole "players generate a group of planets and then generate characters native to said planets" really made the setting instantly intimate.

That game was a freaking masterpiece for two months. Then they added classes and killed it.

I actually liked Traveller 2300 better. The setting was "grittier" and I thought the system was much better.
Although for board/war gaming, Renegade Legion: Interceptor was my favorite for fighter dogfighting.

>you can die during char gen
Why is that a good thing? It's just going to take more time to get going. "Aw shit, my dude died in chargen, I gotta start from scratch."

I use 4e for space-opera space-fantasy, and it works brilliantly. You just need an excuse for swords to be a thing (lightsabers, or personal shields maybe?) and have a little creativity in refluffing.
Granted it doesn't feel like I'm actually in a sci-fi universe, but it does make me feel like I'm actually in a sci-fi movie/book/series, which is what I'm really looking for anyway.
